About External Male Catheters

An external catheter (also called a condom catheter or sheath catheter) rolls onto the penis and connects to a drainage bag via tubing — collecting urine as it is produced without any urethral insertion. External catheters are used for male urinary incontinence management only; they are not appropriate for urinary retention, where an intermittent or indwelling catheter is required to empty the bladder. The Rochester Spirit hydrocolloid sheath uses an integrated hydrocolloid adhesive that actively wicks moisture away from the penile skin through the breathable silicone surface, preventing the maceration that is the primary cause of peristomal skin breakdown in external catheter users. Style 2 suits standard anatomy; Style 3 suits retracted or contracted anatomy where the shorter Style 2 sheath cannot maintain a reliable seal. Size is determined by penile shaft diameter in millimeters — not French size. A continence nurse or urology specialist can assist with first-time sizing.
