About Urinary Drainage Bags

Leg bags (500–1000mL) are worn against the thigh or calf during the day, connected to the catheter via tubing, and secured with fabric or elastic straps. They are emptied as needed via a drain valve — clamp, lever tap, or twist — and must always be positioned below bladder level to prevent urine backflow. Bedside bags (1500–4000mL) are larger-capacity bags used overnight or for immobile patients, connected via extension tubing to the leg bag outlet or directly to the catheter. Anti-reflux valves on all quality drainage bags prevent urine backflow toward the catheter, reducing CAUTI risk. Nephrostomy bags are specifically designed for renal drainage via a nephrostomy tube placed directly into the kidney, with waist belt attachment and smaller capacity. Belly bags (Teleflex) are waist-worn bags for Foley or suprapubic catheters — not for intermittent use. Overnight urinal systems (Advantage) provide bed-mounted collection for incontinent or mobility-limited patients who cannot transfer to a toilet at night. HCPCS A4357 applies to most urinary drainage bags for Medicare billing.
