What is a sit-to-stand device?

A patient standing lift, also known as a patient lift or a stand assist lift, is a mechanical device used to assist individuals who have difficulty standing up from a seated position, transferring between different surfaces, or walking due to mobility issues or physical disabilities. These lifts are commonly used in healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, and home care settings to provide safe and comfortable assistance to both patients and caregivers during transfers.

A sit-to-stand device is designed to support only the upper body of the client, it requires the resident to be able to bear some weight. It is quite different from a Hoyer; a sit-to-stand device is meant to assist with the manual stand/pivot transfer that is performed frequently by caregivers in transferring a weight bearing client from a seated position to a standing posture.

Questions

Will Medicare cover the cost of a Sit-to-Stand?
No, at this time Medicare will cover the least costly alternative, which is a manual Hoyer Lift.
