Compression Bandages

Compression therapy: the treatment venous wounds can’t heal without.

Compression bandages do something no wound dressing alone can — they counteract the venous hypertension that keeps leg ulcers from closing. Whether you’re managing a venous leg ulcer, post-surgical edema, or lymphedema, the right compression system delivers the sustained sub-bandage pressure that drives fluid out of tissue and restores circulation. Not sure which system is right for your patient or loved one? Our complete wound care guide covers when and how compression therapy is used alongside primary dressings.

Compression Bandage describes a wide variety of bandages such as short stretch compression bandages, Unna Boot, and Comprilan.

How to choose the right compression bandage

What compression level do I need for a venous leg ulcer?

Venous leg ulcers typically require 30–40 mmHg of sustained sub-bandage pressure. Two-layer systems like 3M Coban deliver consistent, graduated compression that single-layer elastic bandages can’t maintain over time. Always confirm an ABI (ankle-brachial index) of 0.8 or above before applying compression — compression on an arterial ulcer is contraindicated.

What’s the difference between a one-layer and two-layer compression system?

Single-layer bandages provide light support and edema control for mild swelling. Two-layer compression systems combine a padding layer with an outer compression layer to achieve therapeutic pressure levels for venous ulcers and moderate-to-severe lymphedema. For most clinical venous ulcer protocols, a two-layer system is the standard of care.

Can compression bandages be used after surgery?

Yes — tubular retention bandages and light compression are commonly used post-surgically to reduce swelling, secure primary dressings, and support tissue healing. Tubular elastic retainers like Surgilast are also useful for holding dressings in place on difficult body areas including the chest, axilla, and perineum.

Do I need a prescription for compression bandages?

Most compression bandages available here are sold over the counter. Higher-compression medical-grade systems may require clinician guidance for proper application technique. If you’re unsure what level is appropriate, call our team — we’re happy to help.

Pair with the right wound dressing

Compression bandages are the secondary layer — your primary dressing goes on the wound first. For venous ulcers, the most common combinations are:
