Shop Hospital Bed Mattresses by Type

Choose the category below based on the level of care and pressure relief your patient needs. If you are unsure where to start, our team can help you match the right system to the specific risk level and care environment.

Standard Hospital Mattresses

Basic foam and innerspring mattress replacements for short-term recovery, general home care, and patients at very low risk of pressure injuries. Options include innerspring coil systems, fiber core mattresses, and entry-level foam replacements from Drive Medical, Invacare, McKesson, and Protekt. Simple, maintenance-free, and cost-effective.

Prevention & Therapeutic Mattresses

Pressure redistribution foam and specialty mattresses designed for patients at low to high risk of pressure injuries during extended bed use. Includes segmented foam surfaces, gel-infused foam, zoned therapeutic mattresses, and bariatric options from Span America, Invacare, Protekt, and Drive Medical. Non-powered — no pumps, no noise, no maintenance.

Alternating Pressure Mattress Systems

Powered mattress systems that cycle air between cells on a timed interval to continuously redistribute pressure and improve circulation. Indicated for patients with existing pressure injuries or at high risk due to limited mobility and extended bed rest. Available in overlay and full mattress replacement configurations.

Low Air Loss Mattress Systems

Advanced powered systems that combine alternating pressure therapy with continuous airflow through the mattress surface — managing heat, moisture, and microclimate to protect skin integrity. Indicated for patients with stage III or IV pressure injuries or conditions requiring active moisture management. Clinical-grade performance for home and long-term care.

Lateral Rotation Mattress Systems

Powered systems that automatically and gently rotate the patient from side to side on a timed cycle — supporting pulmonary health, secretion management, and continuous pressure redistribution for immobile patients. Used in hospital, long-term care, and advanced home care settings where manual repositioning is insufficient or not possible.

Mattress Overlays & Pads

Foam, gel, and alternating pressure overlays that add a layer of comfort and protection to an existing mattress without full replacement. A practical and cost-effective first step for patients at low to moderate risk, or as a supplement to a standard mattress in a home care setting.

Which Mattress Type Is Right for Your Patient?

What is the best mattress for pressure sores?

For patients with existing pressure injuries, alternating pressure or low air loss mattress systems are the clinical standard. The right choice depends on the stage of injury, the patient's mobility level, and whether moisture management is also a factor. Our team can help you identify the appropriate system for your specific situation — call 866-218-0902.

What mattress is best for home care?

Most home care patients start with a therapeutic foam mattress or a pressure redistribution overlay, depending on their risk level and how much time they spend in bed. For patients who are largely mobile and use the hospital bed primarily for sleep and rest, a standard innerspring or fiber mattress may be sufficient. For patients spending most of the day in bed, a therapeutic foam or alternating pressure system is the more appropriate choice.

When should I upgrade to a powered mattress system?

Consider a powered alternating pressure or low air loss system when a patient has limited mobility, spends most of the day in bed, shows early signs of skin breakdown, or has a history of pressure injuries. Early intervention with the right system is significantly more effective — and less costly — than treating an established wound. If you are unsure whether your patient has reached this threshold, call us and we will help you evaluate.

Does Medicare cover a hospital bed mattress?

Medicare Part B may cover certain mattress systems when a qualifying diagnosis and physician documentation are in place. Coverage depends on the specific system, the patient's diagnosis, and the HCPCS code. We handle Medicare billing directly — call us before purchasing and we will verify your coverage first. 866-218-0902 | support@medicaldepartmentstore.com
