Description

The ActiveAid 285 is the tilt-in-space version of the ActiveAid stainless steel rehab shower commode line — the chair OTs reach for when a user needs both clinical-grade construction and genuine tilt-in-space function for daily bathing. The patented Gravity Assist Tilt (GAT) mechanism uses gravity rather than a motor or complex mechanical system to achieve infinite tilt positioning up to 30°. The result is a low-maintenance, easy-to-operate tilt that a caregiver can engage without significant force, and which holds at any angle across the full range — not just preset positions.

The stainless steel frame is corrosion-resistant for daily wet-environment use and carries the same clinical build quality as the ActiveAid 600 Series — heavier than aluminum, longer service life, designed for institutional-intensity daily use. Frame widths run from 16" to 22". Seat widths are 16", 18", 20", and 22". Seat depths are 18" and 20". Four casters standard; 24" rear wheel self-propel option available. The chair rolls over most toilets at 19.25" seat height clearance, and can be used with the included anti-spill commode pail. Supports up to 350 lbs. Made in the USA.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gravity Assist Tilt and how is it different from other tilt mechanisms?
Most tilt mechanisms use a mechanical ratchet or pin system that locks at preset positions — you engage the tilt, it clicks to 10°, 20°, 30°. The ActiveAid 285's GAT uses gravity and counterbalance to achieve infinite positioning — the chair tilts to exactly the angle the caregiver positions it, not just to preset stops. This gives more precise control for users who need a specific angle for comfort, pressure relief, or hygiene access. It also requires less force to operate than spring or ratchet-based systems, which reduces caregiver strain over daily use.

How does this compare to the ActiveAid 600 Series?
The 600 Series is a non-tilt clinical shower commode — same stainless steel frame quality, similar configuration options, but no tilt function. The 285 adds tilt-in-space for users who need that capability. If tilt isn't clinically indicated, the 600 is the more straightforward and lower-cost choice. If tilt is needed, the 285 is the right chair in the ActiveAid line.

What seat and frame width should I order?
Frame and seat width should be specified based on the user's measurements — ideally following an OT assessment. As a general rule, seat width should be 1–2" wider than the user's hip width when seated. Frame width determines overall chair width and must fit through bathroom doorways. Call us with the user's measurements and we'll confirm the right configuration before the order goes in.

Can it be used over a standard toilet?
Yes — the underseat clearance is 19.25" in the upright position, which clears most standard and comfort-height residential toilets. The chair also works with the included commode pail as a freestanding commode.

Is a self-propelled version available?
Yes — the Model 285-24 replaces the 5" casters with 24" rear wheels for users who can self-propel. Call us to confirm availability and pricing.

Is an OT assessment recommended before ordering?
For a chair at this level of clinical complexity — tilt-in-space, multiple frame and seat width options, configurable back and leg rests — an OT assessment is strongly recommended. Getting the configuration right matters for both the user's safety and the caregiver's ergonomics. We work with OTs across SW Florida regularly and can support the assessment process with product information and measurements.
