Clinical FAQs
What is the difference between standard wear and extended wear?
The Assura standard wear barrier is designed for everyday output and normal peristomal skin conditions. Extended wear barriers use a more aggressive adhesive formulation and are typically recommended for patients with liquid or high-output stomas (such as ileostomy), or those experiencing peristomal skin breakdown. If you find your barrier loosening before 3 days, ask your WOC nurse about extended wear options.
How do I know which flange size to order?
The flange size must match your Assura pouch. Green-coded products (SKU 12841, 12842) use a 40mm coupling ring. Red-coded products (SKU 12844, 12845) use a 50mm coupling ring. If you're ordering a replacement barrier, match the color of your current pouch ring.
How do I measure for the correct pre-cut stoma opening?
Use a stoma measuring guide or trace your stoma on paper. The pre-cut opening should be within 1/8" (3mm) of your stoma's widest diameter. A fit that is too tight can cause pressure injury; too loose allows output to contact peristomal skin. If your stoma is between sizes, size up and use a barrier ring or paste to fill the gap.
Can the pouch be changed without removing the barrier?
Yes. The Assura two-piece mechanical coupling allows the pouch to be detached and replaced independently. This is a key clinical advantage — the barrier can remain in place for its full wear time (typically 3–5 days) while the pouch is emptied or changed as needed, reducing skin trauma from frequent barrier removal.
Is this barrier compatible with all Coloplast pouches?
No. The Assura barrier must be used with Assura-series pouches in the matching color code. It is not compatible with SenSura Click or SenSura Mio Click systems. Mixing coupling systems will result in an insecure fit and leakage risk.
What is a spiral adhesive and why does it matter?
Coloplast's spiral adhesive is a layered material system structured in a spiral pattern. It provides grip while simultaneously absorbing moisture from the skin — helping prevent maceration and irritation at the peristomal site. This is particularly beneficial for patients who sweat heavily or have oily skin.
Can this barrier be used with an ostomy belt?
Yes. Belt tabs are pre-attached to the barrier. An ostomy belt can provide additional security, particularly for patients who are more physically active, have abdominal contour changes, or need extra peace of mind. The belt attaches to the tabs on either side of the flange.
