How Comfeel Plus Works — CMC + Calcium Alginate Hybrid Construction

Standard hydrocolloid dressings consist of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) particles dispersed in a synthetic adhesive and elastomer matrix, covered by a semi-permeable film. CMC is a hydrophilic cellulose derivative that absorbs water — when the dry CMC particles contact wound exudate, they absorb the fluid and swell into a viscous gel. This gel creates the moist wound environment that defines hydrocolloid dressing function, while the surrounding adhesive matrix maintains the dressing's shape and adhesion to the periwound skin.

The semi-permeable polyurethane film on the outer surface of Comfeel Plus is not a static barrier — it is a self-regulating moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) membrane. The rate at which moisture vapor passes through the film automatically adjusts to the moisture vapor pressure beneath it: when the wound is producing more exudate and the gel under the film is heavily saturated, the film transmits more moisture vapor outward. When exudate production is lower, less vapor is transmitted. This self-regulation means the wound environment under the dressing maintains an optimal moisture balance regardless of fluctuations in exudate output — neither drying out when production is low nor becoming overhydrated when production is higher. The film simultaneously blocks bacteria and liquid water from entering from the external environment, providing a complete bacterial barrier under shower and bathing conditions.

Application & Use Guide

• Cleanse the wound with normal saline or appropriate wound cleanser and dry the periwound skin thoroughly before application
• Select a size that covers the wound with at least a 1–2.5 cm (0.5–1 inch) border of intact periwound skin on all sides — the hydrocolloid adhesive must contact intact skin for a complete seal
• Warm the dressing briefly in your hands before application — body temperature improves the conformability and initial tack of the hydrocolloid adhesive
• Use the "no touch" split backing to apply the dressing accurately without contacting the adhesive surface — peel one half of the backing, position the dressing over the wound, then peel the second half and smooth down
• Apply firm, even hand pressure across the full dressing surface for 30–60 seconds to activate adhesion — concentrate pressure on the border where the adhesive contacts periwound skin
• Monitor the gel blister visible through the film at each assessment — change the dressing when the gel front reaches within 1 cm of the dressing edge
• Change at a maximum of 7 days regardless of gel indicator status
• Removal: Press down gently on the periwound skin adjacent to one corner while slowly lifting the dressing edge — "stretch and lift" technique. Pull the dressing back over itself in a slow, controlled motion parallel to the skin rather than pulling straight up. The hydrocolloid releases gradually; avoid rapid removal which can cause skin stripping
• After removal, rinse any residual gel from the wound with saline — the gel is water-soluble and clears easily
