Coloplast Comfeelยฎ Plus Ulcer Care Hydrocellular Hydrocolloid Dressing โ CMC + Alginate, Color Change Indicator, 5 Sizes
A CMC and calcium alginate hydrocolloid with 30 years of clinical documentation โ with a built-in color change indicator that tells you exactly when to change it, a mapping grid for wound measurement, and a self-regulating film that adapts moisture evaporation to the wound's actual exudate level. Comfeelยฎ Plus Ulcer Care is Coloplast's flagship hydrocolloid wound dressing, combining sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) particles โ the moisture-absorbing core of all hydrocolloids โ with calcium alginate in a single pad to deliver higher exudate absorption capacity than standard CMC-only hydrocolloid dressings. The dressing converts absorbed exudate into a viscous gel that does not adhere to the wound surface, maintains a consistently moist wound healing environment, and seals the wound completely from bacteria and external moisture under a semi-permeable polyurethane film. When the gel under the film expands to within 1 cm of the dressing border, the dressing is ready to change โ a visible, objective indicator that eliminates guesswork. A wound measurement grid printed on the film allows wound dimensions to be assessed at each change without tools. Up to 7-day wear. Available in five sizes including sacral. Clinically documented for 30 years.

Indicated For โ Wound Types
- Venous and arterial leg ulcers โ low to moderately exuding phases of wound management
- Pressure injuries โ Stage 1 and Stage 2, and the final stages of healing for deeper wounds
- Post-operative wounds โ surgical incisions and sites in the healing and closure phase
- Donor sites โ partial thickness wounds in the re-epithelialization phase
- Superficial and partial thickness burns โ first and second degree
- Skin abrasions and skin tears requiring a moist wound environment for closure
- As a secondary dressing over wound fillers, gels, or foam primary dressings on deeper wounds
- Any low to moderately exuding acute or chronic wound requiring a standard, clinically proven hydrocolloid primary dressing
Do not use on: Third-degree burns. Infected wounds (without professional supervision). Wounds with heavy exudate โ the dressing will saturate too quickly. Do not use if there is a known sensitivity to any component of the dressing. Single use only.
How Comfeel Plus Works โ CMC + Calcium Alginate Hybrid Construction
Standard hydrocolloid dressings consist of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) particles dispersed in a synthetic adhesive and elastomer matrix, covered by a semi-permeable film. CMC is a hydrophilic cellulose derivative that absorbs water โ when the dry CMC particles contact wound exudate, they absorb the fluid and swell into a viscous gel. This gel creates the moist wound environment that defines hydrocolloid dressing function, while the surrounding adhesive matrix maintains the dressing's shape and adhesion to the periwound skin.
Comfeel Plus improves on the standard CMC hydrocolloid by adding calcium alginate to the CMC matrix. The alginate component provides additional absorptive capacity beyond what the CMC alone delivers โ when exudate contacts the alginate fibers dispersed throughout the pad, a calcium-to-sodium ion exchange converts the alginate to a gel that integrates with the CMC gel. The result is a hybrid gel with higher total absorption capacity and better structural cohesion than a CMC-only hydrocolloid, allowing Comfeel Plus to manage higher exudate volumes and maintain effective function for longer wear periods before saturation.
- CMC particles absorb exudate and form a viscous gel โ the primary hydrocolloid function
- Calcium alginate fibers provide supplemental absorption capacity and gel cohesion beyond standard CMC-only hydrocolloid
- Combined gel does not adhere to the wound surface โ lifts cleanly at dressing change without wound disruption
- Adhesive/elastomer matrix maintains dressing shape, periwound adhesion, and the bacteria-tight seal throughout the wear period
- Conforms to body contours and surface irregularities โ the elastomer base flexes with the skin
- Smooth outer surface minimizes shear and friction against wound edges โ important for Stage 1โ2 pressure injuries
- Suitable for use as a primary or secondary dressing
The Self-Regulating Film โ How It Works
The semi-permeable polyurethane film on the outer surface of Comfeel Plus is not a static barrier โ it is a self-regulating moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) membrane. The rate at which moisture vapor passes through the film automatically adjusts to the moisture vapor pressure beneath it: when the wound is producing more exudate and the gel under the film is heavily saturated, the film transmits more moisture vapor outward. When exudate production is lower, less vapor is transmitted. This self-regulation means the wound environment under the dressing maintains an optimal moisture balance regardless of fluctuations in exudate output โ neither drying out when production is low nor becoming overhydrated when production is higher. The film simultaneously blocks bacteria and liquid water from entering from the external environment, providing a complete bacterial barrier under shower and bathing conditions.
The Color Change Indicator โ When to Change Comfeel Plus
One of the most consistent clinical challenges with hydrocolloid dressings is determining when the dressing needs changing. Changing too early wastes dressings, disrupts healing tissue unnecessarily, and increases cost. Changing too late allows saturation, gel bleed-through, and periwound maceration. Comfeel Plus eliminates this uncertainty through a visible, objective change indicator: as the CMC + alginate matrix absorbs exudate and the gel expands, the gel blister beneath the film grows progressively outward from the wound center toward the dressing border. When the gel front reaches within 1 cm of the dressing edge, the dressing is at optimal capacity and should be changed. If the gel reaches the border edge, strikethrough and leakage risk increases significantly. This visual signal is the most reliable guide to change timing โ more accurate than calendar-based schedules and better suited to wounds whose exudate output fluctuates over the healing course.
The Mapping Grid โ Wound Measurement at Every Change
Printed directly on the outer film of every Comfeel Plus Ulcer Care dressing is a centimeter-scale mapping grid. This allows the clinician or patient to measure wound length and width at each dressing change without a separate ruler, tape measure, or tracing template โ the wound dimensions are visible through the film and can be read directly from the grid on the dressing in situ or immediately after removal. Tracking wound dimensions at each change provides objective evidence of healing progress (or deterioration) that supports clinical decision-making, documents treatment response, and simplifies the wound measurement requirement in formal care protocols.
The "No Touch" Application System
Comfeel Plus uses a split-release paper backing designed for single-handed, gloved application without touching the adhesive surface. The backing peels away in sections, allowing the dressing to be positioned and applied accurately over the wound while maintaining sterility of the adhesive face โ important for clinical environments where aseptic technique is required and for home care users applying their own dressings with limited dexterity.
The Comfeel Plus Range โ What "Ulcer Care" Means vs. Other Comfeel Plus Products
The Comfeel Plus line includes several distinct products optimized for different wound types. "Ulcer Care" (this product) contains the CMC + calcium alginate hydrocolloid matrix and is the standard general-purpose formulation for low to moderately exuding leg ulcers, pressure injuries, and chronic wounds. Other Comfeel Plus products include:
- Comfeel Plus Transparent: A thinner, clear version for superficial wounds, donor sites, and post-operative sites where wound visualization without dressing removal is the priority โ does not contain alginate, lower exudate capacity
- Comfeel Plus Contour: A flexible, four-layer version for wounds on elbows, knees, heels, and other high-movement bony prominences where standard hydrocolloids tend to lift and fail
- Comfeel Plus Pressure Relieving: A tapered-edge version designed specifically for Stage 1โ2 pressure injuries, with a beveled perimeter that reduces shear forces at the dressing edge
If you are managing a low to moderately exuding leg ulcer, pressure injury, donor site, or post-operative wound with standard wound geometry on a flat or moderately curved body surface, Comfeel Plus Ulcer Care is the correct product in the range.
Application & Use Guide
- Cleanse the wound with normal saline or appropriate wound cleanser and dry the periwound skin thoroughly before application
- Select a size that covers the wound with at least a 1โ2.5 cm (0.5โ1 inch) border of intact periwound skin on all sides โ the hydrocolloid adhesive must contact intact skin for a complete seal
- Warm the dressing briefly in your hands before application โ body temperature improves the conformability and initial tack of the hydrocolloid adhesive
- Use the "no touch" split backing to apply the dressing accurately without contacting the adhesive surface โ peel one half of the backing, position the dressing over the wound, then peel the second half and smooth down
- Apply firm, even hand pressure across the full dressing surface for 30โ60 seconds to activate adhesion โ concentrate pressure on the border where the adhesive contacts periwound skin
- Monitor the gel blister visible through the film at each assessment โ change the dressing when the gel front reaches within 1 cm of the dressing edge
- Change at a maximum of 7 days regardless of gel indicator status
- Removal: Press down gently on the periwound skin adjacent to one corner while slowly lifting the dressing edge โ "stretch and lift" technique. Pull the dressing back over itself in a slow, controlled motion parallel to the skin rather than pulling straight up. The hydrocolloid releases gradually; avoid rapid removal which can cause skin stripping
- After removal, rinse any residual gel from the wound with saline โ the gel is water-soluble and clears easily
