How to Use the ConvaTec Visi-Flow Irrigator

1. Gather your supplies. You will need: the Visi-Flow irrigator kit, an irrigator sleeve compatible with your system (sold separately), an ostomy belt if using a one-piece sleeve, lukewarm water, and a replacement pouch or stoma cap for after the procedure.
2. Close the thumb-control regulator clamp on the tubing before filling the bag.
3. Top-fill the irrigator bag with the amount of lukewarm water prescribed by your healthcare provider. Use the bold volume graduations to fill accurately.
4. Confirm the paddle-wheel spins briefly when you open the clamp during priming — this confirms the flow path is open and unobstructed.
5. Hang the irrigator bag so the bottom of the bag is approximately at shoulder height when seated.
6. Prime the tubing. Open the clamp to let a small amount of water flow through the cone, removing air from the line. Close the clamp.
7. Remove and discard your existing pouch or stoma cap.
8. Attach your irrigator sleeve. For one-piece sleeves, secure with an ostomy belt. For SUR-FIT two-piece systems, attach the sleeve to your skin barrier flange. Place the open end of the sleeve into the toilet.
9. Position yourself comfortably on or beside the toilet and open the top of the irrigator sleeve.
10. Gently insert the Visi-Flow cone into your stoma as instructed by your care team. Hold the cone firmly against the stoma with one hand.
11. Use your thumb to open the flow regulator with your other hand. Water will begin flowing. Watch the paddle wheel to confirm active flow. Adjust the regulator to control the rate — slower flow reduces cramping.
12. If cramping occurs, close the regulator and wait for the cramp to pass before resuming. This is normal and does not require stopping the procedure.
13. Once all the water has entered, remove the cone and close the top of the irrigator sleeve. Initial returns of water and stool will begin.
14. Allow approximately one hour for the full irrigation and return procedure.
15. After the procedure, clean the irrigator bag and cone thoroughly per manufacturer instructions and allow to air dry before storing.
