Description

Ferndale Mastisol Liquid Bandage — Wound Closure Strip Securement & Skin Closure Support, Sterile Vials & Bottles

Keeps closure strips on. Reduces the need for sutures. Seals the wound edge. Ferndale Mastisol Liquid Bandage is a clear, non-irritating, non-water-soluble medical skin adhesive used to enhance the effectiveness of wound closure strips (Steri-Strips, butterfly closures) and minimize the need for sutures on lacerations, surgical incisions, and minor wounds. The same clinically proven formula as Mastisol Liquid Adhesive — 7–10 times stickier than Compound Tincture of Benzoin — applied to the intact skin bordering a wound to create a powerful tacky base that closure strips bond to and stay on, even through sweat, activity, and bathing. When the closure strip holds longer, the wound edges stay approximated longer — which is the single most important factor in clean, low-scar wound healing. Sterile vials are packaged individually for hygienic single-use application. Also available in 15 ml and 2 oz bottles for home wound care. Latex-free. Non-water-soluble. Flammable — keep away from open flame. Use Ferndale Detachol for removal. FSA eligible.

✔ 7–10x Stickier Than Benzoin    ✔ Keeps Closure Strips On Longer    ✔ Minimizes Need for Sutures    ✔ Non-Water-Soluble — Holds Through Moisture    ✔ Clear · Non-Irritating · Non-Staining    ✔ Latex-Free    ✔ Sterile Vials · Bottles · FSA Eligible

⚠ Important: Apply Mastisol to the intact skin surrounding the wound — not directly into the wound bed or open tissue. Flammable — keep away from open flame and allow to dry fully before applying closure strips. Discontinue if skin irritation develops.

Features & Benefits

  • Keeps Closure Strips On — The Primary Job — Wound closure strips (Steri-Strips, butterfly closures) work by holding wound edges approximated while the skin heals. They fail when they lift — usually from moisture, sweat, or movement. Applied to the intact skin bordering the wound before the closure strip, Mastisol creates a high-tack base that the strip bonds to rather than to bare skin alone. The strip stays flat, full-contact, and effective for the full intended wear period. This extended hold is directly associated with better wound edge approximation, reduced scarring, and a lower likelihood of needing sutures on lacerations that might otherwise require them.
  • Minimizes Suture Use — Many minor lacerations and surgical incisions that would otherwise require sutures can be managed with closure strips alone — if the strips stay on. Mastisol's dramatically superior tack makes closure-strip-only wound management viable for a wider range of wounds and patients, including active patients, patients with oily or sweaty skin, and patients where suture placement would be technically difficult or traumatic.
  • Non-Water-Soluble — Holds Through Bathing & Activity — Standard benzoin-based skin preps are water-soluble and weaken significantly when exposed to moisture. Mastisol is non-water-soluble — the film stays intact through sweat, bathing, and daily activity. For patients who cannot or will not restrict activity during wound healing, this is a meaningful clinical advantage.
  • Clear · Non-Staining · Non-Irritating — Mastisol dries completely clear without discoloring the skin, clothing, or dressings. The formula is designed to minimize sensitization risk — an important consideration for wounds that require multiple closure strip changes over days to weeks, and for patients with sensitive skin around the wound site.
  • Sterile Vials for Aseptic Application — The individually packaged 2/3 cc sterile tip vials (052348) allow single-use aseptic application — important for fresh surgical wounds, post-procedural sites, and clinical settings where infection control is a priority. Each vial is used once and discarded. Bottles are appropriate for home wound care settings where single-use sterility is not required.
  • Latex-Free · CHG-Compatible — Latex-free for patients and clinicians with latex sensitivity. Compatible with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), which is routinely used for wound and surgical site antisepsis, ensuring Mastisol does not interfere with standard disinfection protocols.

Mastisol Liquid Bandage vs. Compound Tincture of Benzoin

Feature Mastisol Liquid Bandage Compound Tincture of Benzoin
Adhesion Strength 7–10x stronger — clinically proven Standard baseline
Water Solubility Non-water-soluble — holds through moisture Water-soluble — weakens with sweat and moisture
Sensitization Risk Lower — gentler formula Higher — benzoin resin is a known sensitizer
CHG Compatible Yes Not specifically rated
Closure Strip Hold Significantly extended — strips stay flat and full-contact Standard — strips may lift in 1–2 days with activity or moisture
Latex-Free Yes Yes
Removal Ferndale Detachol — clean, atraumatic Alcohol or adhesive remover

Bottom line: For wound closure strip securement, Mastisol is the superior choice in nearly every clinical parameter — stronger hold, moisture resistance, lower sensitization risk, and CHG compatibility. Benzoin remains adequate for routine short-duration applications on intact, dry skin. For any wound where the closure strip staying on matters — choose Mastisol.

How to Use Mastisol Liquid Bandage for Wound Closure

Sterile Vial (052348)

  1. Clean and dry the skin around the wound thoroughly.
  2. Place the sealed blister pack label-side down on a hard surface. Gently press through the blister to crack the inner ampule and release the adhesive.
  3. Peel back the blister lid and remove the vial using aseptic technique.
  4. Turn the vial upside down and apply Mastisol in a thin line along the intact skin on both sides of the wound — approximately half an inch from the wound edge. Do not apply inside the wound.
  5. Allow to dry 20–30 seconds until tacky.
  6. Apply wound closure strips across the wound, pressing firmly onto the dried Mastisol surface on each side.

Bottle Format (15 ml, 2 oz)

  1. Clean and dry the skin around the wound.
  2. Using the applicator or a cotton-tipped swab, apply a thin line of Mastisol along the intact skin on both sides of the wound — not inside the wound itself.
  3. Allow 20–30 seconds to dry until tacky.
  4. Apply closure strips firmly across the wound and onto the Mastisol-prepped skin.

Removal: Apply Ferndale Detachol Adhesive Remover along the closure strip edges to break down the Mastisol bond before removing the strips. Do not pull strips away without remover — especially on sensitive or healing skin.
