Hollister Adapt Skin Barrier Paste — Low-Alcohol Hydrocolloid Filler, 2 oz & 0.5 oz Tubes
Low-alcohol formula. Fills every crevice. Empties to the last drop. Hollister Adapt Skin Barrier Paste is a hydrocolloid blend ostomy barrier paste used as a filler and caulking agent to smooth uneven skin surfaces, fill skin folds and creases around the stoma, and prevent ostomy drainage from tracking under the skin barrier. The low-alcohol formula is specifically formulated to minimize stinging on application — a meaningful advantage over standard-alcohol pastes for patients with sensitive or mildly irritated peristomal skin. The soft, easy-squeeze tube delivers precise, controlled application and can be pressed empty to the very last drop without waste. Not an adhesive — Adapt Paste works by filling the gaps and irregular surfaces that allow leakage to begin, helping the skin barrier maintain a more secure seal and extending wear time. Latex-free. Available in a 2 oz tube (79300) and a convenient 0.5 oz travel-size tube (79301). FSA eligible.

Note: Adapt Paste contains alcohol and may cause stinging if applied to significantly irritated or broken peristomal skin. If your skin is already denuded or severely compromised, consult your ostomy nurse (WOCN) before use. For patients who cannot tolerate any alcohol in paste, consider Hollister Adapt Rings — a ring-format alternative that is completely alcohol-free.
Features & Benefits
- Low-Alcohol Formula — Minimized Stinging — Standard ostomy pastes contain alcohol as a component of their formula — and alcohol applied to peristomal skin can sting, particularly when skin is mildly irritated or sensitive. Hollister Adapt Paste is specifically formulated with a low level of alcohol rather than the higher alcohol content found in some competing pastes. This reduced alcohol content significantly minimizes the stinging sensation on application, making it a more comfortable choice for daily use — especially for patients with sensitive peristomal skin who have experienced stinging with other paste products
- Hydrocolloid Blend — Fills Crevices & Folds — Adapt Paste uses a blend of hydrocolloids to create a paste that fills in skin folds, wrinkles, scars, and irregular contours around the stoma — the uneven terrain that prevents skin barriers from seating flat against the skin. By filling these surface irregularities, the paste eliminates the channels where ostomy drainage begins to track under the wafer edge. The result is a flatter, more even pouching surface that supports a more complete barrier seal
- Not an Adhesive — A Caulk — Adapt Paste does not glue the barrier to the skin — the barrier's own adhesive does that. Adapt Paste functions like caulk in a bathroom: it fills the gaps and seams where leakage begins. This distinction matters because applying paste like an adhesive — spreading it broadly — actually interferes with barrier adhesion. Paste should be applied as a bead into specific gaps and crevices, not as a thin layer across the entire pouching surface
- Extends Wear Time & Protects Skin — By sealing the gaps that allow drainage to track under the barrier, Adapt Paste helps the skin barrier maintain its seal longer — extending wear time and reducing the frequency of unplanned pouch changes. It also keeps stoma output from contacting peristomal skin, preventing the chemical irritation, inflammation, and skin breakdown that output exposure causes
- Easy-Squeeze Tube — To the Last Drop — The soft, flexible tube is designed for easy squeezing — particularly helpful for patients with limited hand strength or dexterity. The soft tube material allows the paste to be pressed all the way to the last drop without waste — an important practical consideration for a product patients use at every barrier change
- Safe Near the Stoma — Adapt Paste does not harm the stoma or affect how the stoma drains. It can be applied directly around the stoma opening on the skin or on the adhesive side of the barrier without concern about stoma contact
- 0.5 oz Travel Size Available — The 79301 is a 0.5 oz tube — convenient for travel, vacation, or keeping a spare in a bag or at work. Patients who prefer a smaller format for on-the-go use can stock the 0.5 oz alongside their standard 2 oz home supply
- Latex-Free — Not made with natural rubber latex — safe for patients and clinicians with latex sensitivity or allergy
- FSA / HSA Eligible — Purchase with Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account funds as an ostomy care supply

Bottom line: Both are excellent ostomy barrier pastes. Choose Adapt Paste when minimizing stinging is a priority — the low-alcohol formula is a genuine clinical advantage for patients with sensitive or mildly irritated peristomal skin. Choose Stomahesive Paste if you use ConvaTec barriers and prefer to stay within the same brand system. Both work effectively with any brand of barrier. If you need a completely alcohol-free option, consider Hollister Adapt Rings instead of paste.
Application Instructions
Method 1 — Apply to the Barrier Wafer
- Remove the backing from the skin barrier
- Apply a small bead of Adapt Paste at the inner edge of the skin barrier — next to the stoma opening — on the adhesive side of the wafer
- You may let it sit briefly while you remove your used pouch and prepare your skin
- Apply additional paste to uneven areas near the stoma opening if needed
- Place the barrier over the stoma and press firmly from the stoma outward with palm pressure
Method 2 — Apply to Skin
- Clean and dry peristomal skin thoroughly
- Apply a thin bead of Adapt Paste directly into skin folds, creases, or uneven areas around the stoma
- Allow to set briefly, then apply the skin barrier over the paste with firm palm pressure
Removal: Adapt Paste typically lifts off when the ostomy pouch is removed. If residue remains after a short-wear change, gently lift it from the skin — do not scrub. If the residue is clean and not causing irritation, a new barrier can be applied over it.
