Hollister Adapt Skin Protective Wipes

Hollister Adapt Skin Protective Wipes create a thin no-sting protective film on peristomal skin, guarding against effluent damage and the mechanical stripping caused by repeated adhesive removal. Alcohol-free formula with aloe vera for sensitive, irritated skin. Single-use, easy to apply. Wait until dry before applying pouching system or tape. Not recommended with extended wear skin barriers — may reduce wear time. FSA eligible. Sold individually, 50/pack, or 12-pack case.

Description

Hollister Adapt Skin Protective Wipes

SKU: 7917

Alcohol-Free  |  No-Sting  |  Aloe Vera Formula  |  Peristomal Skin Protection  |  Single-Use  |  FSA Eligible

A no-sting, alcohol-free protective wipe that creates a thin barrier film on peristomal skin before pouching system application. The film protects skin from effluent contact and reduces mechanical stripping caused by repeated adhesive removal. Improved formula includes aloe vera for added skin comfort. Apply to clean, dry skin and allow to dry completely before attaching the pouching system. Not recommended for use with extended wear skin barriers — the protective film may reduce adhesion time on extended wear products. FSA eligible. Sold individually, 50/pack, or 12-pack case.

Key Features

  • Creates a thin protective film on peristomal skin — acts as a sacrificial barrier between the skin and adhesive; when the barrier is removed, the film absorbs the mechanical stripping force rather than the skin surface
  • Alcohol-free, no-sting formula — tolerated on sensitive, irritated, or compromised peristomal skin without the burning associated with alcohol-based barrier wipes
  • Aloe vera added — soothes and supports skin health at the peristomal site
  • Protects against effluent damage — barrier film reduces direct contact of stoma output with peristomal skin during pouch wear
  • Helps prevent adhesive stripping — repeated barrier removal without a protective film can progressively damage the superficial skin layers; protective film reduces this cumulative effect
  • Single-use packet — hygienic, convenient, portable; no contamination risk from multi-use packaging
  • Easy application — wipe applied to clean, dry skin; wait until fully dry before applying pouching system
  • Not recommended with extended wear skin barriers — the protective film interface may reduce adhesion and decrease wear time on extended wear products specifically
  • FSA eligible

How to Apply

  1. Wash peristomal skin gently with warm water and pat completely dry
  2. Tear open the single-use packet and unfold the wipe
  3. Apply the wipe evenly over the peristomal skin area where the barrier will be placed — use light, smooth strokes
  4. Allow the skin to dry completely to the touch before applying the pouching system or tape (typically 15–30 seconds)
  5. Apply your ostomy barrier or pouching system as usual over the dried film
  6. Discard the used wipe packet — do not reuse

Clinical FAQs

What does a skin protective wipe actually do and why does peristomal skin need it?

Peristomal skin — the 2–3 inches of skin immediately surrounding the stoma — is exposed to two distinct injury mechanisms that this wipe addresses. The first is chemical damage from effluent: if stoma output leaks under the skin barrier, digestive enzymes and bile salts directly contact the skin, causing rapid irritation, maceration, and breakdown. A protective film creates a physical barrier that reduces this direct chemical exposure during wear. The second mechanism is mechanical stripping: adhesive skin barriers bond well to healthy skin, but when removed — especially repeatedly over days and weeks — they can shear away the superficial layers of the epidermis, progressively thinning and sensitizing the skin. The protective wipe deposits a thin polymer film that bonds to the skin surface and to which the barrier adheres; when the barrier is removed, the film absorbs most of the peel force rather than the epidermis. Over repeated pouch changes, this protection compounds into meaningfully better peristomal skin condition.

Why is this formula alcohol-free and why does that matter?

Older skin protective wipes used alcohol as the carrier solvent — it evaporates quickly, leaving the protective polymer film behind. The problem is that alcohol stings intensely on broken, raw, or inflamed skin. Many ostomates with peristomal skin irritation have compromised skin that most needs protection but tolerates alcohol the least. An alcohol-free formulation achieves the same protective film deposit without the sting, making it practical to use even when peristomal skin is already irritated. The aloe vera in this Hollister Adapt formulation adds a secondary soothing effect on reactive skin. This matters specifically because peristomal skin protection is most important precisely when the skin is most compromised — an alcohol-free product ensures patients won't avoid using it when they need it most.

Why should I not use this wipe with extended wear skin barriers?

Extended wear skin barriers are engineered to maintain adhesion for up to 7 days or more — their adhesive formulation bonds aggressively to bare, clean skin. A skin protective film creates a layer between the skin and the adhesive. For standard-wear barriers (1–3 day wear), this interface is not a significant concern. For extended wear barriers, even a thin polymer film can reduce the initial bond strength sufficiently to shorten the wear window — the barrier may lift or leak before the intended extended wear period is complete. If you use extended wear barriers and need peristomal skin protection, discuss with your WOC nurse or ostomy specialist: there may be alternative approaches to protecting the skin (such as barrier rings, moisture barrier creams, or different powder/paste combinations) that are compatible with your extended wear system. Do not use this wipe with extended wear barriers without first confirming with your clinician.
