Primer Modified Unna Boot Dressing — Zinc Oxide, Gelatin-Free, 3" & 4" x 10 Yards
Non-hardening zinc oxide paste. Threadlocked gauze. Gelatin-free formula that stays moist and supple throughout the wear period. The Primer Modified Unna Boot by Integra LifeSciences (formerly Derma Sciences) is a 100% soft cotton gauze compression bandage evenly impregnated with a non-hardening zinc oxide paste — the clinical standard for ambulatory management of venous stasis leg ulcers, lymphatic edema, and lower extremity conditions requiring sustained compression and wound support. The gelatin-free formulation prevents the hardening and caking that compromises traditional gelatin-based Unna boots, maintaining a moist, flexible, patient-comfortable dressing throughout the full wear period. Non-raveling threadlocked construction prevents wound entanglement, and a finished edge stops stray threads at the cut end from interfering with healing. Preservative-free formula reduces irritation risk. Packaged in a vacuum-sealed pouch for freshness. Available in 3" and 4" widths, with or without calamine, sold individually or by the case of 12.

Features & Benefits
- Non-Hardening Zinc Oxide Paste — The Primer Unna Boot is impregnated with a non-hardening zinc oxide paste that retains its moist, semi-solid consistency throughout the full wear period. Unlike traditional Unna boots made with gelatin-based paste that hardens into a rigid cast, the zinc oxide formulation remains flexible and comfortable — allowing normal ambulatory movement and reducing patient discomfort during extended compression therapy. Zinc oxide also supports the skin barrier, helps manage exudate, and contributes to the anti-inflammatory environment needed for venous ulcer healing
- Gelatin-Free Formula — Elimination of gelatin removes the primary cause of hardening and caking in conventional Unna boot dressings. The gelatin-free paste maintains a consistent moist texture from application through removal — particularly important for patients who are ambulatory between dressing changes
- Threadlocked Non-Raveling Gauze — Primer's cotton gauze uses a threadlocked weave construction that prevents individual threads from raveling or pulling away from the bandage during application and wear. This eliminates the risk of loose threads becoming embedded in or entangled with wound tissue — a significant concern with standard gauze bandages used in Unna boot applications
- Finished Edge — A sewn finished edge at the end of the roll prevents stray threads from escaping at the cut end of the bandage during application or wear — reducing the risk of thread contamination at the wound site and simplifying clean removal at dressing change
- Calamine Option — Soothing & Drying — The calamine / zinc oxide formulation adds calamine to the paste — a time-proven skin-soothing agent that helps dry the oozing and weeping associated with poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and inflamed or irritated periwound skin. The calamine formula is particularly appropriate when significant skin irritation, eczema of the leg, or contact dermatitis accompanies the primary wound condition
- Preservative-Free — No preservatives in the paste formulation reduces the risk of chemical sensitivity or contact irritation reactions in patients receiving repeated or long-term Unna boot therapy
- Vacuum-Sealed Packaging — Each roll is individually packaged in a vacuum-sealed pouch that maintains paste moisture content and prevents drying between manufacture and use — ensuring the bandage performs as intended at the time of application
- 3" and 4" Widths — The 3-inch width is appropriate for slender or pediatric legs and smaller extremities. The 4-inch width is standard for most adult lower leg applications and provides faster coverage over the larger circumference of a typical adult calf and ankle
Clinical Indications
- Venous stasis leg ulcers — ambulatory compression management
- Lymphatic edema of the lower extremity
- Thrombophlebitis — supportive compression
- Eczema of the leg and chronic lower extremity dermatitis
- Varicose ulcers requiring protection and support
- Minor sprains, strains, and fractures of the foot and ankle
- Skin grafts on burn wounds — protective compression
- Poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac — oozing and weeping (calamine formula)
- Extremities requiring sustained protection, support, and mild compression
With Calamine vs. Zinc Oxide Only — Which Formula to Choose
| Feature | Zinc Oxide Only (GL-300-1 / 400-1) | Calamine / Zinc Oxide (GL-300-1C / GL4001C) |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc Oxide | Yes — non-hardening paste | Yes — non-hardening paste |
| Calamine | No | Yes — added skin-soothing agent |
| Best For | Standard venous ulcer and compression management | Irritated, weeping, or inflamed periwound skin; eczema of the leg; poison ivy/oak/sumac |
| Skin Effect | Protective, barrier-supporting | Soothing, drying, anti-pruritic |
Clinical guidance: When periwound skin is intact and the primary goal is venous compression and wound bed management, zinc oxide only is the standard choice. When the surrounding skin shows signs of weeping, oozing, eczema, or contact irritation, the calamine formula adds meaningful soothing and drying benefit. Consult your facility's wound care protocol or clinician for formula selection guidance.
Application Overview
- Cleanse the wound and periwound area per facility protocol before application
- Beginning at the base of the toes, apply the Primer Unna Boot in a spiral or figure-eight wrap pattern, working proximally up the leg to just below the knee
- Apply with even, moderate tension — avoid excessive compression that could restrict circulation
- Overlap each layer by approximately 50% for even paste distribution and consistent compression
- Cover the Unna boot with an outer compression bandage (such as a short-stretch or cohesive bandage) to complete the compression layer system and secure the boot in place
- Change per clinician order — typically every 5 to 7 days, or sooner if the dressing becomes saturated, soiled, or loose
Important: Unna boot therapy requires clinical assessment of arterial circulation before application. Do not apply to patients with significant arterial insufficiency. Application and change schedule should be directed by a qualified wound care clinician.
