Joerns Dolphin Fluid Immersion Simulation (FIS) Bariatric Mattress System

Gold-standard wound care therapy for bariatric patients — Fluid Immersion Simulation continuously adapts to the patient's body to eliminate pressure points, minimise tissue deformation, and maintain near-normal blood flow across all skin surfaces.
The Joerns Dolphin FIS Bariatric Mattress System brings the same Fluid Immersion Simulation technology as the DolphinCare Integrated Bed System into a dedicated bariatric mattress platform — supporting patients from 500 to 1,000 lbs depending on configuration, across widths of 35" and 48" and lengths of 82" or 88".
Rather than redistributing pressure from one area to another the way alternating pressure or low air loss systems do, FIS allows the body to immerse into the surface itself — simulating the near-weightless environment of floating in fluid. The result is a dramatic reduction in tissue deformation and shear forces at exactly the skin areas most vulnerable to breakdown. The auto-adjusting immersion technology responds continuously to the patient's body weight and position, maintaining that protective environment without manual intervention.
Who Is This Mattress Best For?
- Bariatric patients requiring the highest level of pressure relief — supporting 500 to 1,000 lbs
- Patients with Stage III or Stage IV pressure injuries where tissue protection is critical
- Patients with surgical skin flaps or grafts where any pressure or shear can undo clinical progress
- Patients who cannot tolerate repositioning schedules due to pain, fragility, or clinical contraindications
- Hospitals, wound care centres, and advanced home care settings where healing outcomes are the primary priority
Key Features at a Glance
- Fluid Immersion Simulation — body immerses into the surface to eliminate pressure points entirely
- Auto-adjusting immersion technology responds continuously to patient weight and position
- Minimises tissue deformation and shear forces at the most vulnerable skin areas
- Maintains near-normal blood flow to all skin surfaces — directly supporting wound healing
- Bariatric capacity — supports 500 to 1,000 lbs depending on configuration
- Available in 35" and 48" widths and 82" or 88" lengths for bariatric bed compatibility
- 8" to 10" thickness options
- Suitable for hospital, wound care, and advanced home care environments
Why Choose the Dolphin FIS Bariatric?
Bariatric patients face a compounded wound care challenge. Higher body weight means greater interface pressure on bony prominences. Larger body surface area means more moisture accumulation. And the physical difficulty of repositioning higher-weight patients means manual turning schedules are often inconsistent in practice — even in well-staffed facilities.
The Dolphin FIS Bariatric addresses all three of these challenges simultaneously. By allowing the body to immerse into the surface rather than resting on top of it, the system eliminates the pressure events that cause tissue damage before they occur. The auto-adjusting technology means the protection is continuous and does not depend on caregiver timing or repositioning schedules.
For bariatric patients with existing Stage III–IV wounds, surgical flaps, or grafts — where even a single pressure event can set back healing by days or weeks — the FIS platform removes that risk in a way that no alternating pressure or low air loss system can replicate. It is not a step up from a standard system. It is a fundamentally different approach to wound care.
