Single-Point & Folding Canes — For mild balance support and occasional stability assistance. A single-point cane provides a meaningful increase in confidence and stability for users whose balance is slightly compromised or who are recovering from a minor procedure. Folding canes collapse to fit in a bag or pocket — practical for users who need support intermittently rather than constantly.
Quad Canes — Four-tip base provides a broader, more stable contact point than a single-point cane. The right step up for users who need more support than a standard cane provides but do not yet need a full walker. Stands upright on its own — a practical advantage when setting it down frequently.
Crutches — For short-term non-weight-bearing recovery in users with adequate upper body strength and coordination. Crutches shift weight off an injured lower limb and onto the arms and shoulders. For older adults or anyone with shoulder weakness, a knee walker handles the same non-weight-bearing need with far less physical demand and significantly less fall risk.
Which Is Right for Your Situation
A cane is right when you need occasional support — mild balance concerns, recovering from a minor procedure, or simply more confidence on uneven surfaces. A quad cane is right when a single-point cane is not quite enough but a full walker feels like more than you need. Crutches are right for short-term injury recovery in otherwise healthy, mobile individuals with good upper body strength.
If your need goes beyond what a cane provides — if you need support for most of your walking, or you are returning home from surgery — see our walkers and rollators sections. Read our complete walking aid guide if you are unsure which category fits your situation.
