Most ostomy nurses recommend cutting the barrier opening 1/8 inch larger than the stoma to protect peristomal skin without the barrier edge pressing against the stoma. If your stoma measures 1 inch, use the 1-1/8 inch cutter. If your stoma is oval or irregular, a custom oval cutter can be ordered. Important: The Nu-Hope Hole Cutter is designed to cut through hydrocolloid skin barrier material only. It is not intended to cut through the paper backing, plastic film, or tape components of a barrier. Do not use on a Formica or metal surface — these will dull the cutting edge. Always use a wooden cutting board or sturdy cardboard as the cutting base.

How to Use the Nu-Hope Hole Cutter

1. Measure your stoma — use a stoma sizing guide to measure the stoma at its widest point. Select the cutter that is 1/8 inch larger than your stoma measurement to allow a comfortable, protective fit
2. Mark the barrier — place the skin barrier adhesive-side up on a wooden cutting board; mark the center of your stoma location on the barrier backing with a pen if helpful
3. Position the cutter — center the hole cutter over the marked location, using the clear handle to see exactly where the blade will cut
4. Cut with body weight — stand directly over the cutter and press down firmly with your palm, rotating the handle in a circular motion as you apply downward pressure. Best results come from using body weight rather than just hand strength
5. Remove the cut disk — push the cut piece of hydrocolloid material out through the center clean-out hole in the handle
6. Apply the barrier — proceed with your standard barrier change routine

Surface tip: Always cut on a wooden cutting board or firm cardboard. Do not cut on Formica, tile, glass, or metal surfaces — hard surfaces will dull the cutting edge rapidly.
