The Complete Guide

If you read one thing before choosing any equipment, make it this. Written for real people, not product rankings.

Your Beach Is Not Every Beach

The most important question isn't which chair is best — it's what surface you're actually dealing with.

🏖️
Deep Soft Sand
Gulf Coast, Outer Banks, Pacific — requires oversized balloon tires
🌊
Hard-Pack & Wet Sand
Waterline, coastal paths — wider range of equipment works here
🪨
Rocky Coastal
Pacific NW, New England — needs all-terrain suspension, not just balloon tires
🏊
Pool & Aquatic
Entirely different equipment — corrosion-resistant, ADA-compliant, fast-drying

The Questions We Get Most Often

Short answers here — full answers in the guide above or on the phone with us.

What's the difference between a beach chair and a pool chair?
Beach chairs have large balloon tires for sand. Pool chairs are built from fast-drying, anti-corrosive materials for repeated water immersion. They overlap but are different categories.

Can I actually get into the ocean in one of these chairs?
Some yes, some no. The Hippocampe and Mobi-Chair are built for water entry. Most PVC chairs are water-resistant but not designed for surf use. Know before you buy.
Full answer →
Is there anything for a child with a disability at the beach?
Yes — the Wheeleez Sandpiper is the only purpose-built pediatric beach chair. The Hippocampe comes in a Small size. The DeBug Baby Bug is a beach stroller for young children.
Full answer →
Can I self-propel a beach chair on soft sand?
On hard-packed sand, yes — many users manage well. On deep soft sand, it requires serious upper body strength. Honest answer: most users on soft sand need a caregiver pushing.
Full answer →
What does the Hippocampe do that other chairs don't?
At 37 lbs it's dramatically lighter than any comparable chair. No metal means zero rust. Four sizes from children to adults. Self-propel, push, or tow. It was designed by and for wheelchair users.

I don't want to buy — are there free loaner programs?
Yes, at hundreds of US beaches. National Parks, state beaches, and many cities operate free seasonal loaner programs. We cover them by region in the full guide.
