Continuous Flow Portable Oxygen Concentrators — Southwest Florida & Nationwide
Continuous flow portable oxygen concentrators deliver a steady, uninterrupted stream of oxygen at a set liters-per-minute rate — the same way home concentrators and oxygen tanks work, but in a portable format that goes where you go. For patients whose prescription requires consistent oxygen delivery at all hours — including sleep, CPAP or BiPAP use, or higher-demand activity — continuous flow is not a preference. It is a clinical requirement.
Medical Department Store carries the full range of continuous flow and dual-mode portable concentrators, from wearable units starting at 6.36 lbs to heavy-duty rolling systems for patients with complex prescriptions. Every unit is available for hands-on demonstration at any of our five Southwest Florida showroom locations, with a 10-Day No-Risk Trial and licensed Respiratory Therapists on staff to match the right unit to your actual prescription and life.

Do You Need Continuous Flow — or Will Pulse Dose Work?
This is the most important question to answer before choosing any portable oxygen concentrator — and it is one your prescription should make clear.
Continuous flow delivers oxygen constantly, regardless of whether you are inhaling, exhaling, or holding your breath. It is required when your prescription specifies a liters-per-minute rate, when you need oxygen during sleep, or when you use a CPAP or BiPAP machine that requires a steady pressurized oxygen source. It is heavier than pulse dose equipment — but for the patients who need it, there is no substitute.
Pulse dose concentrators detect the moment you inhale and deliver a timed burst of oxygen — lighter, longer battery life, and better suited for active daytime use. If your prescription specifies a pulse dose setting rather than an LPM rate, and your physician has not indicated a need for nighttime oxygen, pulse dose is worth comparing before you decide.
Not sure which type your prescription calls for? Our Respiratory Therapists can answer that in one phone call — and verify that the specific unit you are considering actually delivers what your physician ordered at your exact setting. That is a five-minute conversation that websites cannot have with you. 📞 866-218-0902
What to Know Before Choosing a Continuous Flow Portable Concentrator
Your LPM rate determines your options. Continuous flow portables in our lineup range from 0 to 3 liters per minute. A unit rated to 2 LPM is not appropriate for a patient prescribed 3 LPM. Start with your prescription — everything else follows from it.
Weight is a daily commitment. The lightest continuous flow wearable we carry is 6.36 lbs — meaningfully heavier than pulse dose units. Rolling cart systems start at 16.7 lbs. If weight is a concern, come in and hold the units before you decide. There is a significant difference between reading a spec sheet and picking something up twelve times in a day.
Battery life in Southwest Florida heat runs 70–75% of published specs. Manufacturer battery ratings are tested in controlled conditions. On a hot Florida summer day — on a lanai, in a car, at an outdoor event — plan accordingly. We always build a larger safety margin into battery planning than the number on the box suggests.
CPAP and BiPAP compatibility is not universal. Most portable concentrators — including most pulse dose units — cannot reliably integrate with sleep therapy equipment. The OxLife Independence is the unit in our lineup specifically designed for CPAP and BiPAP integration. If you use sleep therapy equipment and need supplemental oxygen, tell us before we recommend anything.
Hurricane season is a planning requirement. If you depend on continuous flow oxygen and live in Southwest Florida, you need a power outage plan before storm season — not during it. Know your battery hours, your DC car power capability, and your generator compatibility. Come in in April or May and we will build an actual plan for your specific equipment and situation.

Continuous Flow Portable Oxygen Concentrator — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between continuous flow and pulse dose oxygen concentrators?
Continuous flow delivers a steady stream of oxygen at a set liters-per-minute rate, regardless of your breathing pattern — appropriate for sleep, CPAP use, and patients who require constant delivery. Pulse dose detects your breath and delivers oxygen in timed bursts, making units lighter and longer-lasting on battery. Your prescription determines which type you need. If it is not clear, call us before buying anything. 866-218-0902
Can a continuous flow portable concentrator replace my home oxygen system entirely?
For the right patients and units, yes. Dual-mode units like the OxLife Independence and CAIRE Eclipse 5 are designed and approved for 24/7 use as a sole oxygen source, including sleep. Many patients eliminate home concentrators and tanks entirely after making this transition. We will help you evaluate whether that works for your specific prescription and breathing pattern.
Are continuous flow concentrators approved for air travel?
Every continuous flow unit we carry is FAA-approved for domestic commercial flights. International travel adds voltage and documentation requirements that vary by airline and route. If you are flying with a continuous flow concentrator — especially for the first time — call us before you book. We will walk you through what your airline will need and make sure you have it. 866-218-0902
Can I use a continuous flow concentrator with my CPAP or BiPAP machine?
Not all continuous flow portables are CPAP or BiPAP compatible. The OxLife Independence is the unit in our lineup specifically designed for sleep therapy integration. If you use a CPAP or BiPAP and require supplemental oxygen during sleep, this is a critical part of the buying conversation — tell us before we recommend anything.
Does Medicare cover a continuous flow portable oxygen concentrator?
Medicare Part B may cover portable oxygen equipment with a qualifying diagnosis and physician documentation. We handle Medicare billing directly. Call us before your visit with your Medicare card and prescription and we will verify your coverage first — and tell you honestly what qualifies. 866-218-0902 | support@medicaldepartmentstore.com
Do you service continuous flow concentrators you did not sell?
Yes — every brand, every model, regardless of where it was purchased, at all five Southwest Florida locations. Home service calls available for patients who cannot come in. 866-218-0902
Can I try a continuous flow unit at home before committing?
Yes. Our 10-Day No-Risk Trial lets you take any concentrator home and use it in your actual life for 10 days. If it is not the right fit, bring it back and we exchange it — no restocking fee, no fine print. Walk-ins welcome at all five locations, or call ahead for home delivery of larger units.
