Collect a fresh urine sample in a clean, dry container — a midstream catch is preferred for most accurate results. Remove one strip from the container and replace the cap immediately to protect remaining strips from moisture and light exposure. Dip the strip into the urine sample briefly — approximately 2 seconds — ensuring both reactive pad zones are fully wetted. Remove the strip and hold it horizontally to prevent the reagents from mixing between the two pad zones. After 15 seconds, compare the ketone pad color to the ketone reference scale on the container label; after 30 seconds, compare the glucose pad color to the glucose reference scale. Read each pad separately against its corresponding color blocks on the container — do not use one reference scale for both pads. The glucose reference scale shows colors corresponding to negative, trace, 1/10%, 1/4%, 1/2%, 1%, and 2% glucose concentrations; the ketone reference scale shows negative, trace, small, moderate, and large ketone concentrations. Record both results and share them with your healthcare provider as instructed. Do not use strips past their expiration date, and discard any strips that have been exposed to heat, moisture, or light.
