ConvaTec CarboFlex is a sterile, non-adhesive five-layer dressing engineered specifically for the management of malodorous wounds. Its advanced construction pairs an activated charcoal layer that traps and absorbs odor-causing gas compounds with an alginate/hydrofiber layer that pulls in exudate and converts it to a soft gel — controlling both the smell and the moisture of difficult, malodorous wounds in a single dressing. Non-adhesive, latex-free, and available in three sizes for shallow primary application or as a secondary dressing over wound fillers for deeper cavities.

Note: CarboFlex may be used on infected wounds in conjunction with antibiotic therapy — infected wounds should be monitored and inspected frequently. Do not use if there is a known sensitivity to charcoal or any component of the dressing.
How CarboFlex Works — The 5-Layer Construction
Wound malodor is caused by gas compounds released during the breakdown of necrotic tissue and bacterial colonization. Standard dressings absorb exudate but do nothing to intercept those volatile odor molecules. CarboFlex addresses both problems simultaneously through a purpose-built five-layer architecture that manages exudate, odor, and moisture at each layer of the dressing.
- Layer 1 — Non-Adherent Wound Contact Layer: The fibrous, non-shiny side that lies directly against the wound — applied face-down. Non-adhesive to protect fragile wound tissue on removal
- Layer 2 — Alginate/Hydrofiber Absorbent Layer: Rapidly wicks exudate from the wound bed and converts it to a soft, cohesive gel — absorbing drainage while maintaining a moist wound interface that supports healing
- Layer 3 — Activated Charcoal Cloth Layer: A double-knit activated charcoal cloth that intercepts and traps volatile odor-causing gas compounds before they can escape through the dressing — the core odor elimination mechanism
- Layer 4 — Water-Resistant Outer Film Sleeve: A smooth, flexible, water-resistant film that seals the charcoal layer from external moisture, keeping it dry and preserving its odor-absorption capacity throughout the wear period
- Layer 5 — Outer Backing Layer: Provides structural integrity, smooth exterior surface, and supports tape or bandage fixation
Important: Do NOT cut CarboFlex. Cutting the dressing breaks the sealed construction and releases the activated charcoal. Always choose a size that overlaps the wound edges by at least 1 inch (3 cm) on all sides.
Application & Use Guide
- Debride and cleanse the wound — dry the surrounding periwound skin before application
- Select a size that extends at least 1 inch (3 cm) beyond the wound margin on all sides
- Shallow wounds: Apply CarboFlex directly over the wound bed, fibrous non-shiny side down
- Deep cavity wounds: Pack the cavity with an appropriate wound filler (gel, hydrofiber rope, alginate rope), then lay CarboFlex over the wound as the secondary dressing
- Highly exudating wounds: Apply a foam dressing as the primary layer first, then cover with CarboFlex as the secondary odor-control layer
- Secure with medical adhesive tape or a bandage — CarboFlex is non-adhesive and requires external fixation
- Change when exudate visibly reaches the outer layer, when odor is no longer controlled, or after 3 days maximum on non-infected wounds
- Remove by gently lifting from the corner
