Description

DermaRite DermaGinate/Ag Calcium Alginate Dressing with Ionic Silver — 3-Day Antimicrobial Protection, 4 Formats

High-absorbency calcium alginate with ionic silver — for infected and heavily exuding wounds that need both exudate management and antimicrobial protection in a single dressing. DermaGinate/Ag by DermaRite is a calcium alginate wound dressing infused with ionic silver that combines two of the most clinically important functions in moderate-to-heavy exudate wound management: the natural gelling, highly absorbent properties of calcium alginate fibers, and the broad-spectrum antimicrobial action of ionic silver. On contact with wound exudate, the alginate fibers rapidly absorb fluid — up to 12 times their own weight — and convert into a soft, soothing hydrogel that conforms to the wound bed, maintains a moist healing environment, and supports autolytic debridement. Simultaneously, ionic silver releases into the wound environment to reduce bacterial burden and provide up to 3 days of continuous antimicrobial protection. White to off-white color does not mask exudate assessment. Latex-free and biocompatible. Available in four formats — 2x2 inch square, 4.25x4.25 inch square, 2x8 inch rectangle, and 12 inch rope for cavity and tunneling wounds.

✔ Absorbs Up to 12x Its Own Weight — Manages Moderate to Heavy Exudate    ✔ Ionic Silver — Up to 3 Days Continuous Antimicrobial Protection    ✔ Gels on Contact — Soothing, Conforms to Wound Bed    ✔ Supports Moist Wound Healing & Autolytic Debridement    ✔ Color Won't Mask Exudate Assessment    ✔ Latex-Free, Biocompatible

Indicated For — Wound Types & Applications

  • Infected wounds — ionic silver reduces bacterial burden throughout the wound environment
  • Wounds suspected of possible infection — antimicrobial protection as a preventive measure
  • Moderate to heavily exuding partial- and full-thickness wounds — primary indication
  • Pressure injuries — all stages with moderate to heavy exudate
  • Venous leg ulcers
  • Diabetic foot ulcers (non-ischemic)
  • Post-operative and surgical wounds
  • Trauma wounds
  • Leg ulcers
  • Cavity, tunneling, and undermining wounds — rope format (00535E)
  • Donor sites and graft sites
  • Sloughy wounds requiring autolytic debridement support
  • Palliative wounds requiring ongoing antimicrobial and exudate management

Do not use on: Third-degree burns. Patients with known sensitivity to silver or alginate components. Dry wounds with little to no exudate — alginate requires moisture to activate and gel. Do not pack rope tightly into cavity wounds — allow room for swelling as the dressing absorbs exudate.

How DermaGinate/Ag Works — Alginate Gelling + Ionic Silver

DermaGinate/Ag combines two distinct wound management mechanisms in a single dressing layer:

  • Calcium alginate fiber gelling — when calcium alginate fibers contact sodium ions present in wound exudate, an ion exchange reaction occurs: calcium ions in the fiber are replaced by sodium ions from the exudate, causing the alginate to convert from a dry fibrous material into a soft, moist hydrogel. This gel conforms closely to the wound bed contours, maintains a consistently moist healing environment that supports granulation tissue formation and autolytic debridement, and provides a soothing, non-disruptive contact surface at the wound interface. The alginate's high absorbency capacity — minimum 12 times its own weight — means the dressing can manage significant exudate volumes without strike-through or maceration of periwound skin.
  • Ionic silver antimicrobial action — ionic silver (Ag⁺) disrupts bacterial cell function through multiple simultaneous mechanisms: it interferes with bacterial cell wall integrity, disrupts enzyme function and cellular respiration, and binds to bacterial DNA to prevent replication. This multi-modal mechanism makes silver effective against a broad spectrum of wound pathogens including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and antibiotic-resistant organisms including MRSA and VRE. The ionic silver in DermaGinate/Ag provides up to 3 days of continuous antimicrobial protection from a single application — allowing extended wear intervals while maintaining active infection control.
  • White color preserves assessment — the dressing's white-to-off-white color does not stain or color exudate as it is absorbed, allowing clinicians to accurately assess exudate color, consistency, and volume through the dressing change process without color interference from the dressing itself.

Choosing the Right Format

  • 00520E (2x2" Square) — Smallest format. For compact, targeted wound treatment — small pressure injuries, minor surgical wounds, and sites where the larger sizes would significantly overhang the wound bed. Box of 10.
  • 00525E (4.25x4.25" Square) — Standard general-purpose size. The most versatile format for routine pressure ulcer, venous ulcer, and surgical wound management. Box of 10.
  • 00530E (2x8" Rectangle) — Elongated format for wounds with a long narrow footprint — shin ulcers, incisions along a limb, or elongated post-surgical sites. Box of 10.
  • 00535E (12" Rope) — For cavity, tunneling, and undermining wounds. The rope is loosely placed into the wound depth — do not pack tightly. The alginate rope gels as it absorbs exudate, filling the cavity and maintaining moist wound contact throughout the wear period. Box of 5.

Application Instructions

  1. Cleanse the wound with sterile saline — remove any dressing residue or loose debris
  2. Select the appropriate DermaGinate/Ag format and size — the dressing should cover the entire wound surface with approximately 1 cm overlap onto periwound skin
  3. For flat wounds (00520E, 00525E, 00530E): apply the dressing dry directly to the wound bed
  4. For cavity and tunneling wounds (00535E rope): loosely pack the rope into the wound cavity — do not compress tightly; leave room for the dressing to expand as it absorbs exudate
  5. Apply an appropriate secondary dressing to cover and secure — foam, film, or bordered adhesive dressing
  6. Change every 1 to 3 days depending on exudate volume — the dressing can remain in place up to 3 days when exudate levels allow
  7. To remove: irrigate with sterile saline to facilitate removal — the gelled alginate should lift cleanly from the wound bed; irrigate to remove any remaining gel residue
