Features & Benefits
- Alcohol-Free & Acetone-Free — No Sting, No Drying — Most adhesive solvents rely on alcohol or acetone to dissolve adhesive bonds. Both sting on application and strip moisture from the skin, leaving peristomal, periwound, or IV site skin drier and more vulnerable after each dressing change. Detachol uses a specially refined paraffin hydrocarbon formula that dissolves adhesive bonds without alcohol, acetone, benzene, chloroform, or ether. The result is a completely sting-free removal experience that does not dry or irritate the skin — a meaningful clinical and quality-of-life difference for patients who undergo frequent dressing changes.
- Reduces MARSI Risk — Protects Skin Integrity — Medical Adhesive-Related Skin Injury (MARSI) is a well-documented consequence of repeated adhesive application and mechanical removal — skin stripping, tension blisters, and skin tears caused by the force of pulling adhesive dressings off intact skin. Adhesive remover used at every dressing change breaks down the adhesive bond before mechanical force is applied, allowing the dressing to lift away with minimal skin stress. Detachol's formula is specifically designed to completely dissolve adhesive residue — not just loosen it — reducing the cumulative skin injury that builds over weeks and months of daily dressing changes.
- Recommended Removal Partner for Mastisol — Detachol is the specifically recommended remover for Ferndale Mastisol Liquid Adhesive and Mastisol Liquid Bandage. Mastisol's non-water-soluble, extra-strong bond requires a dedicated solvent for clean, atraumatic removal — standard alcohol wipes are not sufficient. Detachol dissolves Mastisol completely without pulling at the skin, which is especially important on post-surgical, fragile, or repeatedly changed sites where skin integrity must be preserved.
- Removes Residue Completely — Reduces Infection Risk — Adhesive residue left on skin after dressing removal is not merely cosmetically unpleasant — it can harbor microorganisms that compromise wound and catheter site integrity. Detachol is specifically formulated to remove adhesive residue completely, not just loosen it. A clean skin surface before the next barrier application supports better adhesion of the new dressing and reduces the microbial load at the site.
- Safe for All Patients — Including Pediatric & Geriatric — Detachol is used as a standard in pediatric and PICU settings specifically because it does not sting or burn — a critical property when changing dressings on infants, children, or elderly patients with fragile, thin skin. The mild fragrance does not cause eye or nasal irritation during facial applications, such as NG tube tape removal.
- Will Not Degrade Sterile Gloves — Some adhesive solvents break down the material in sterile gloves on contact, compromising sterile technique. Detachol is specifically formulated to be compatible with sterile gloves — an important safety property for clinical use.
- CHG-Compatible · Non-Aerosol · Latex-Free — Compatible with chlorhexidine gluconate disinfectants used at vascular access and surgical sites. Non-aerosol and non-explosive — safe for any clinical or home environment. Latex-free for patients and clinicians with latex sensitivity.
Detachol vs. Standard Alcohol Adhesive Removers
| Feature | Ferndale Detachol | Alcohol-Based Adhesive Removers |
|---|---|---|
| Formula | Paraffin hydrocarbon — alcohol-free, acetone-free | Isopropyl alcohol or similar solvent base |
| Stinging on Application | None | Yes — especially on sensitive or mildly broken skin |
| Skin Drying Effect | None — does not dry skin | Yes — repeated use dries peristomal and periwound skin |
| MARSI Reduction | Yes — specifically designed to minimize skin injury | Partial — loosens adhesive but may not prevent all mechanical trauma |
| CHG Compatible | Yes | Varies by product |
| Sterile Glove Safe | Yes | Varies — some alcohol products degrade glove material |
| Mastisol Removal | Complete — specifically recommended | Inadequate for non-water-soluble Mastisol bonds |
| Pediatric / Geriatric Safe | Yes — used as standard in PICU settings | Use with caution — stinging and drying on fragile skin |
Bottom line: For any patient undergoing frequent or ongoing dressing, tape, or ostomy appliance removal — Detachol is the clinically superior choice over alcohol-based removers. The combination of no sting, no drying, complete residue removal, and MARSI risk reduction makes it the appropriate standard regardless of whether Mastisol was used. If Mastisol was used, Detachol is the only recommended remover.
How to Use Detachol Adhesive Remover
Vial Format (0513-48 · 0513-16)
- Place the blister pack label-side down on a hard surface. Gently press through the blister to crack the inner ampule.
- Peel back the blister lid and remove the vial using aseptic technique.
- Gently squeeze the vial to apply Detachol to the corner or edge of the tape or dressing.
- Once the corner is saturated, carefully begin to lift. Continue applying Detachol while gently lifting — work under the dressing progressively rather than pulling all at once.
- Continue until the dressing or tape is fully removed. Clean the skin area with mild soap and water.
Bottle Format (0513-15 · 0513-06 · 0513-04)
- Apply Detachol to a cotton ball, gauze, or swab — or apply directly from the bottle onto the edge of the dressing or tape.
- Allow to saturate the adhesive edge briefly, then begin lifting. Continue applying as you slowly peel back the dressing.
- Once removed, clean the skin with mild soap and water. Allow to dry before applying a new dressing or barrier.
Note: Use on intact skin only — avoid contact with open wounds or broken skin. Do not use near open flame.
