Clinical FAQs
This kit doesn't include a catheter — why would I order supplies separately from the catheter?
There are several practical reasons to order catheter supplies as a separate kit. First, supply consumption does not always match catheter consumption one-for-one — some patients use a fresh supply kit at every session but may have catheters covered under a separate insurance benefit or sourced through a different supplier. Second, institutional and clinical settings often stock supply kits separately from catheters to accommodate varying catheter types and French sizes across different patients without maintaining multiple all-in-one kit configurations. Third, patients who use reusable gloves or prefer their own lubricant brand may still benefit from having the underpad, collection bag, and prep pads pre-packaged in a single-use kit. Ordering supplies and catheters separately allows each component to be stocked and ordered in quantities that match actual usage patterns.
What is BZK and how is it different from PVP?
BZK stands for benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound used as a topical antiseptic. PVP stands for povidone-iodine, an iodine-based antiseptic. Both are effective against a broad range of bacteria and are used for urethral area cleansing before catheter insertion. The practical differences: PVP is generally considered a more potent and broader-spectrum antiseptic for clinical prep, but it contains iodine — patients with iodine allergy, iodine sensitivity, or thyroid conditions should not use PVP. BZK is iodine-free and generally better tolerated by patients with iodine sensitivity; it is less likely to cause skin irritation for patients with sensitive skin. Including both in this kit provides the flexibility to use whichever prep is appropriate for the individual patient, or to use BZK for initial cleaning followed by PVP for final antiseptic preparation, per the clinician's protocol. Patients with known iodine allergy should use BZK only and discard the PVP pad — confirm with your clinician.
What is the underpad drape and how is it used?
The underpad drape is a disposable, absorbent pad that is placed beneath the patient — on the bed, wheelchair seat, or toilet seat — during catheterization. It serves two purposes: creating a clean, absorbent surface for any spillage during catheter preparation or drainage, and providing a defined preparation field on which the catheter and supplies can be placed before and during use. In clinical settings, the underpad drape is part of establishing a clean field that reduces contact between the catheter and unsanitary surfaces. For home users, it provides a convenient, disposable surface that simplifies cleanup. The drape components in this kit are latex-free.
What is the collection bag in this supply kit for?
The collection bag in this insertion kit is a single-use bag for collecting urine during open catheterization when direct toilet drainage is impractical. It is distinct from the integrated sealed bags found in closed-system catheters (Apogee Plus, SpeediCath) — this is a standalone collection bag that can be connected to the catheter's drainage end during the catheterization session. It is particularly useful for patients catheterizing in bed, in a wheelchair without toilet access, or during travel. After catheterization, the bag is sealed, emptied if convenient, and disposed of. It is not a reusable drainage bag — it is a single-use component of this supply kit.
How does this kit compare to the supply items included in the Apogee Plus Coudé Closed Kit (B12CB)?
The Apogee Plus Coudé Closed Kit (B12CB, B14CB, B16CB) is an all-in-one catheterization kit that includes the catheter, an integrated 1500mL sealed collection bag, PVP swab sticks, gloves, an underpad drape, and gauze — everything needed for one catheterization session in a single package. The Apogee Insertion Kit (6100A) is a supplies-only kit with no catheter included — it provides an underpad, collection bag, PVP pad, BZK pad, gloves, and lubricating jelly. The insertion kit is for patients who source their catheter separately; the Apogee Plus Coudé Kit is for patients who want catheter and supplies together in one unit, specifically with a coudé tip and pre-lubricated closed-system catheter. The insertion kit also includes BZK prep pads — an alternative to PVP — which the Coudé Kit does not.
