This kit doesn't include a catheter — why would I order supplies separately from the catheter?

What is BZK and how is it different from PVP?

BZK stands for benzalkonium chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound used as a topical antiseptic. PVP stands for povidone-iodine, an iodine-based antiseptic. Both are effective against a broad range of bacteria and are used for urethral area cleansing before catheter insertion. The practical differences: PVP is generally considered a more potent and broader-spectrum antiseptic for clinical prep, but it contains iodine — patients with iodine allergy, iodine sensitivity, or thyroid conditions should not use PVP. BZK is iodine-free and generally better tolerated by patients with iodine sensitivity; it is less likely to cause skin irritation for patients with sensitive skin. Including both in this kit provides the flexibility to use whichever prep is appropriate for the individual patient, or to use BZK for initial cleaning followed by PVP for final antiseptic preparation, per the clinician's protocol. Patients with known iodine allergy should use BZK only and discard the PVP pad — confirm with your clinician.

What is the underpad drape and how is it used?

The underpad drape is a disposable, absorbent pad that is placed beneath the patient — on the bed, wheelchair seat, or toilet seat — during catheterization. It serves two purposes: creating a clean, absorbent surface for any spillage during catheter preparation or drainage, and providing a defined preparation field on which the catheter and supplies can be placed before and during use. In clinical settings, the underpad drape is part of establishing a clean field that reduces contact between the catheter and unsanitary surfaces. For home users, it provides a convenient, disposable surface that simplifies cleanup. The drape components in this kit are latex-free.

What is the collection bag in this supply kit for?
