The lift whose name became the category
Ted Hoyer invented the patient lift in the 1940s as a way to allow his wife, who had polio, to be transferred without multiple caregivers. The Hoyer lift went into clinical production, became standard equipment in hospitals and nursing homes worldwide, and eventually became the word caregivers use for any patient lift — "Hoyer lift" as a noun, regardless of brand. Joerns Healthcare now manufactures the Hoyer line. When a physician's discharge order says "patient will require a Hoyer lift at home," the HML400 is the lift that order refers to. The brand carries 80 years of clinical trust — and when a family caregiver calls MDS asking for a "Hoyer lift," the HML400 is the answer.

The U-Base — Hoyer's Signature Design
Closed — 24" Wide
U-base closes to 24" outside dimension for doorway navigation and corridor movement. The U-shaped geometry — rather than a straight spreading base — closes to a narrower footprint than most competing lifts while still providing the clearance needed for doorways and hallways.
Open — 38" Inside / 41" Outside
Opens to 38" inside dimension — the U cradles around a wheelchair or toilet rather than simply spreading outward. The U-shape means the outer legs clear the wheelchair footrests while the inner opening surrounds the chair, positioning the lift directly over the patient without requiring the wheelchair to be moved first.
U-base vs straight base for wheelchair transfers: A straight-leg lift opens outward symmetrically. To position it over a wheelchair, you either remove the footrests or angle the lift awkwardly. The Hoyer U-base opens around the wheelchair from behind — the inner 38" spans the chair width while the outer base legs clear the footrests on both sides. This is why hospital and SNF protocols are written around Hoyer-style U-base lifts.
How the HML400 Works

Sling and position
Position patient in sling. Attach sling straps to the non-sway 6-point cradle. Roll lift behind the wheelchair — open U-base to 38" inside, surrounding the chair without removing footrests.

Open base and lock
Open the U-base by hand — it opens smoothly and locks in position. The 4.75" floor clearance allows the base to pass under most bed frames and wheelchair footrests.

Pump to raise
Operate the ergonomically positioned pump handle — it rotates to either side, accommodating the caregiver's approach from either direction. Patient lifts in the non-sway cradle without lateral oscillation.

Lower to destination
Release the hydraulic valve to lower patient into the destination — bed, chair, toilet, shower seat. The 77" maximum clears standard height surfaces. Remove sling once patient is fully supported.
Key Features
Non-Sway Cradle — Patient Stability During Transfer
The Hoyer non-sway cradle is engineered to minimize lateral oscillation during lifting and rotation. When a patient is lifted in a standard 4-point sling, the tendency is for the patient to swing forward/backward and side-to-side as the caregiver rotates the lift. The non-sway cradle geometry dampens this motion — a direct patient comfort and safety benefit that is clinically meaningful for anxious patients or those with pain sensitivity.
Rotating Pump Handle — Both Sides
The pump handle rotates fully to either side of the lift — the caregiver does not need to be on a specific side of the lift to operate the pump. In tight bedroom or bathroom environments where approach angle is limited, this eliminates a common workflow problem. Most competing hydraulic lifts fix the pump handle position.
6-Point Cradle — 4-Point and 6-Point Slings
The HML400's 6-point cradle accommodates both Hoyer 4-point slings and traditional 6-point slings. Hoyer's sling ecosystem is the largest in the category — more sling styles, sizes, and materials are available for Hoyer than any other patient lift brand. Sling availability 5–10 years from now is part of the ownership calculation.
Adjustable U-Base — Hand Operated
The base opens by hand — no foot pedal, no tool. One hand opens the base while the other stabilizes the lift. Locks securely in the open position for the transfer. The U-shape allows access around wheelchairs, toilets, and low furniture that straight-base lifts cannot position around.
Disassembles for Storage and Transport
The mast and base separate without tools — the HML400 breaks down for storage in a closet, a car trunk, or an RV for caregivers who travel with patients. The compact disassembled footprint fits through any interior doorway.
