The I-400 (B1041-TS-GEL) supports users up to 400 lbs with a 21" seat. The I-700 (B1071-TS-GEL) is a bariatric-class chair supporting users up to 700 lbs with a 25.5" seat and reinforced frame. How It Works — Stretcher to Chair

The I-series conversion sequence is the same as the H-250 — the patient never leaves a supine position to enter the chair:

  1. Position chair flat beside the patient's bed, adjusted to matching height. The chair is in stretcher mode — fully horizontal.
  2. Transfer patient horizontally using the HumanCare Patient Transfer System (PTS), slide sheet, or air-assisted lateral transfer device. No lifting required — patient moves at the same level from bed to chair.
  3. Secure patient — headrest, armrests, and footrest are positioned and secured before initiating conversion.
  4. Convert to chair — caregiver operates the adjustment levers to raise the backrest from 0° (supine) to the desired upright angle. Patient rises from flat to seated without being lifted at any point.
  5. Apply brakes or steer — central brake system locks all four castors; steering lock enables directional control for corridor and room navigation.
No sling placement — no wound interference. Because the I-series chair accepts the patient in supine position, no sling is placed around the patient's body. For patients with existing pressure injuries, post-surgical wounds, or fragile skin, this eliminates a significant source of friction, shear, and discomfort at wound sites that traditional sling-based mechanical lift transfers create.

Key Features — Both Models

Stretcher-to-Chair Conversion Converts from fully flat (0° back angle) to fully upright (70° back angle) and any intermediate position. Patient enters in supine position — the chair rises around them rather than placing them into a seated chair.
Single-Caregiver Transfer Designed for one caregiver to manage the entire sequence from bed positioning through horizontal transfer to upright conversion. Reduces caregiver injury risk and eliminates multi-staff coordination for routine transfers.
Tilt-In-Space 0°–17° Tilt-In-Space redistributes pressure while maintaining hip, knee, and ankle joint angles — the correct clinical intervention for routine pressure relief during extended seating. Used as frequently as needed throughout the day without repositioning the patient into a different chair.
Back Angle 0°–70° Full range from completely supine (transfer position) to upright (activity position). Intermediate angles for meals, therapy, comfort, and respiratory management. Adjusted by caregiver via positioning levers.
Trendelenburg Positioning Feet-above-head positioning available for vascular management, circulatory support, and specific clinical indications. Both I-400 and I-700 are Trendelenburg capable as part of the full positioning range.
Central Brake + Steer Lock Four-caster braking system with central control — one action locks all four castors simultaneously. Steer lock function enables directional control during navigation through corridors and between patient rooms. Significantly different from standard wheel locks on transport chairs.
Patient Transfer System (PTS) Compatible Both models are compatible with the HumanCare PTS add-on — a dedicated transfer aid that further simplifies the horizontal transfer step from bed to chair. PTS is available as an optional add-on. Also compatible with standard slide sheets and air-assisted lateral transfer mats.
Adjustable Headrest and Footrest Headrest adjusts 0"–5" above the backrest — appropriate for users with limited or no head control. Footrest adjusts 0"–5" for lower extremity positioning in both prone transfer position and seated upright position.
Gel Seat — Standard Both I-400 and I-700 include a gel seat cushion as standard (indicated by the -GEL suffix in the part number). Gel seat provides meaningful pressure redistribution benefit for patients spending extended time in the chair between transfers.
