The Karman VIP2-TR Tilt-In-Space Reclining Transport Wheelchair combines two independent positioning systems — tilt-in-space and backrest recline — in a lightweight folding transport chair designed for users who need complex postural support and pressure management but do not self-propel. The aircraft-grade T6 aluminum frame keeps weight to approximately 36 lbs. Tilt-In-Space and Recline — Two Independent Systems

0°–35° Tilt Range Tilt-In-Space
The entire seating surface — seat and backrest together — tilts as a unit. The user's hip angle remains constant throughout the full tilt range. Pressure is redistributed away from the ischial tuberosities as the posterior surface area in contact with the chair increases. The weight-shifting system provides a smooth, steady tilt motion with a controlled sense of security for the user. Reduces shear at bony prominences. Used for routine pressure relief throughout the day without repositioning the user.
0°–30° Recline Range Backrest Recline
The backrest reclines independently of the seat — opening the seat-to-back angle. This changes hip flexion and can reduce extensor tone in users with spasticity. The VIP2-TR's anti-slide reclining system locates the pivot point close to the user's actual hip joint, synchronizing chair and body motion. This eliminates the sliding and shearing that occurs in standard reclining chairs where the pivot point is misaligned — the primary cause of skin breakdown during recline.
The Anti-Slide Reclining System — Why It Matters Standard reclining wheelchairs recline from a fixed pivot point on the chair frame — which is almost never aligned with the user's hip joint. As the backrest opens, the user's body slides forward and down in the seat. This sliding creates shear between the user's back and the backrest — one of the primary mechanisms of pressure ulcer formation. The VIP2-TR moves the reclining pivot point to align with the user's hip joint. As the chair reclines, the user's body and the chair move together. No sliding. No shear. The same functional recline range becomes clinically safer and more comfortable.

VIP2-TR vs Standard Tilt-In-Space Transport Wheelchair

The VIP2-TR is distinguished from most tilt transport chairs by two specific features that separate it clinically:

  • Independent recline in addition to tilt. Most tilt-in-space transport chairs tilt only — the seat and back move as a unit. The VIP2-TR adds an independent reclining backrest, giving the caregiver two separate positioning tools: tilt for pressure relief without changing hip angle, and recline for hip angle management, spasticity control, and positioning variety. Users who need both are often moved to much heavier, more expensive power tilt systems. The VIP2-TR provides both in a manual folding transport chair.
