Contraindications: Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to zinc oxide or product components. Unna boots are not intended for non-ambulatory patients. Assess arterial circulation before application — do not apply to patients with significant arterial insufficiency. Application and change schedule must be directed by a qualified clinician.

Application Overview

1. Cleanse and prepare the wound and periwound skin per facility or clinician protocol
2. Beginning at the base of the toes, apply the Unna Boot in a spiral or figure-eight wrap, overlapping each layer by approximately 50%, working up the leg to just below the knee
3. Apply with even, moderate tension — avoid wrinkles, which can cause pressure injury
4. Cover with a secondary cohesive or short-stretch compression bandage to complete the compression system and secure the boot
5. Change per clinician order — typically once or twice per week, or sooner if saturated, loose, malodorous, or if the patient reports increased pain or discomfort
