McKesson Unna Boot — Non-Hardening Zinc Oxide, Finished Edge, 3" & 4", With or Without Calamine
Non-hardening zinc oxide paste. Thread-locked gauze with a finished edge. Stays moist to support healing throughout the full wear period. McKesson Unna Boot bandages are clinical-grade compression dressings of 100% cotton gauze evenly impregnated with a non-hardening zinc oxide paste — delivering sustained venous compression therapy for ambulatory patients with venous stasis ulcers, diabetic foot wounds, and chronic lower limb conditions. The zinc oxide paste maintains a consistent moist consistency throughout the wear period without the hardening and caking of gelatin-based formulations, keeping the dressing flexible and comfortable so patients can walk and participate in normal daily activities during treatment. Thread-locked, non-raveling gauze with a finished edge prevents loose threads from entering the wound. Preservative-free. Latex-free. Vacuum-sealed pouch. Available in 3-inch and 4-inch widths, with or without calamine, sold each or by the case of 12.

Width guidance: The 4-inch width (2067 / 2069) is standard for most adult lower leg Unna boot applications. The 3-inch width (2066 / 2068) is appropriate for slender legs, smaller adult extremities, or pediatric applications where a narrower bandage provides better contouring and wrinkle-free coverage.
Features & Benefits
- Non-Hardening Zinc Oxide Paste — McKesson's Unna Boot is impregnated with a non-hardening zinc oxide paste that stays moist and flexible throughout the full wear period — typically 5 to 7 days. Unlike gelatin-based Unna boots that stiffen with body heat and movement into a rigid, uncomfortable structure, the zinc oxide formulation remains pliable and patient-friendly, allowing normal ambulation during treatment. Walking is clinically beneficial during venous compression therapy — it activates the calf muscle pump that supports venous return — and a comfortable, flexible Unna boot supports patient compliance with ambulation goals
- Zinc Oxide — Wound-Supportive Properties — Zinc oxide provides a moist wound environment that supports healing, helps manage exudate, and delivers mild anti-inflammatory and skin-barrier properties at the wound surface. It also helps dry the oozing and weeping associated with venous ulcers, diabetic wounds, eczema, and poison ivy, oak, or sumac
- Calamine Option — Relief from Itch & Irritation — The calamine formula (2068 / 2069) adds calamine to the zinc oxide paste — providing soothing, cooling, and anti-pruritic relief from the skin irritation and itch that frequently accompany chronic venous insufficiency, periwound eczema, and wound-related inflammation
- Thread-Locked Non-Raveling Gauze — The cotton gauze uses a thread-locked weave that prevents individual threads from raveling or pulling away from the bandage fabric. This eliminates the risk of loose fibers becoming embedded in wound tissue or adhering to granulating wound beds during application, wear, and removal
- Finished Edge — A finished edge at the cut end of the roll prevents stray threads from fraying or protruding at the terminal edge of the bandage during application — reducing thread contamination risk at the wound site
- Preservative-Free — No preservatives in the zinc oxide paste reduces the risk of contact sensitivity or chemical irritation reactions in patients undergoing repeated or long-term Unna boot therapy
- Vacuum-Sealed Pouch — Each roll is individually packaged in an easy-to-open vacuum-sealed pouch that preserves paste moisture from manufacture to point of use — ensuring consistent, ready-to-apply performance at every dressing change
- Inelastic Gauze — Supportive Compression — The inelastic cotton gauze construction provides low-level supportive compression appropriate for ambulatory venous therapy — stiff enough to support foot and leg muscles while conforming to leg contours for a customized fit
- Latex-Free — Not made with natural rubber latex — safe for latex-sensitive patients and compliant with latex-free facility protocols
- Secondary Bandage Recommended — McKesson recommends applying a secondary cohesive bandage over the Unna boot when additional compression or adhesion is needed to complete the compression therapy system
Clinical Indications
- Venous stasis leg ulcers — ambulatory compression therapy
- Diabetic foot wounds requiring supportive compression and wound bed management
- Lymphatic edema of the lower extremity
- Thrombophlebitis — supportive compression
- Eczema of the leg and chronic lower extremity dermatitis
- Varicose ulcers requiring protection and support
- Minor sprains, strains, and fractures of the foot and ankle
- Skin grafts on burn wounds — protective compression
- Poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac — oozing and weeping (calamine formula)
Contraindications: Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to zinc oxide or product components. Unna boots are not intended for non-ambulatory patients. Assess arterial circulation before application — do not apply to patients with significant arterial insufficiency. Application and change schedule must be directed by a qualified clinician.
Application Overview
- Cleanse and prepare the wound and periwound skin per facility or clinician protocol
- Beginning at the base of the toes, apply the Unna Boot in a spiral or figure-eight wrap, overlapping each layer by approximately 50%, working up the leg to just below the knee
- Apply with even, moderate tension — avoid wrinkles, which can cause pressure injury
- Cover with a secondary cohesive or short-stretch compression bandage to complete the compression system and secure the boot
- Change per clinician order — typically once or twice per week, or sooner if saturated, loose, malodorous, or if the patient reports increased pain or discomfort
Important: Unna boot therapy requires clinical vascular assessment before application. Direction from a qualified wound care clinician is required for application and change frequency.
