Molnlycke Mepilex Ag Silver Antimicrobial Foam Dressing — Safetac Silicone, 6 Sizes
Ionic silver that begins inactivating wound pathogens within 30 minutes — with Safetac silicone for pain-free, atraumatic dressing changes. Mepilex Ag is Molnlycke's antimicrobial foam dressing, combining a sustained-release ionic silver layer with the Safetac soft silicone wound contact technology that has made the Mepilex family the clinical standard for low-trauma dressing management. The ionic silver acts at the cellular level — disrupting bacterial cell walls and interrupting replication — to control the microbial load in wounds at risk for infection or showing signs of critical colonization. The Safetac layer seals wound margins to contain exudate and prevent periwound maceration, while releasing from intact skin without stripping, tearing, or causing pain on removal. Silver antimicrobial effect lasts up to 7 days. Available in six sizes for wounds ranging from small pressure injuries to large burn and donor site areas.
✔ Ionic Silver — Inactivates Pathogens Within 30 Minutes, Sustained Up to 7 Days ✔ Safetac® Silicone — Seals Wound Margins, Pain-Free Removal ✔ Waterproof Film Backing — Protects Against External Contamination ✔ Can Be Cut to Fit — Flexible Foam Conforms to Wound Contours

Indicated For — Wound Types
- Pressure ulcers — all stages with medium exudate and signs of infection or critical colonization
- Venous leg ulcers and arterial ulcers
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Partial thickness burns and donor sites
- Traumatic wounds — lacerations, abrasions, skin tears at risk for infection
- Post-surgical wounds with signs of local infection
- Any wound with medium exudate where antimicrobial protection is clinically indicated
- Infected wounds — in conjunction with systemic antibiotic therapy and under professional supervision
Note: Mepilex Ag is not indicated for individuals with a known sensitivity to silver. Remove before MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, electrotherapy (TENS), or electrocardiogram procedures. Does not replace systemic antibiotic therapy when systemic infection is present.
How Mepilex Ag Works — Silver + Safetac
Mepilex Ag delivers antimicrobial protection through two distinct mechanisms working in parallel — ionic silver for bacterial control, and Safetac silicone for wound margin management and trauma-free dressing changes.
Ionic Silver — Antimicrobial Mechanism: Silver ions embedded within the foam are released in a controlled, sustained manner upon contact with wound exudate. Once released, silver ions act at the cellular level — disrupting bacterial cell membranes, interfering with essential enzymatic processes, and inhibiting bacterial replication. This multi-target mechanism is effective against a broad spectrum of wound pathogens including MRSA and other resistant organisms, and begins working within 30 minutes of application with antimicrobial effect sustained for up to 7 days.
Safetac Silicone — Wound Contact Layer: The soft silicone Safetac layer conforms to the full surface contour of the wound and periwound skin — including uneven surfaces, wound edges, and skin folds — creating a complete seal that contains exudate within the dressing and prevents leakage onto surrounding skin. This seal prevents periwound maceration without adhering to the wound bed or fragile granulating tissue. On removal, Safetac releases cleanly from intact skin without stripping the stratum corneum, disrupting granulation tissue, or causing pain — a meaningful clinical advantage in wounds requiring frequent assessment or changes.
- Silver inactivates wound pathogens within 30 minutes — sustained effect up to 7 days
- Broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage including resistant organisms
- Polyurethane foam absorbs and retains exudate away from the wound bed
- Safetac layer seals wound margins — prevents exudate leakage and periwound maceration
- Waterproof outer film blocks external contamination while allowing moisture vapor transmission
- Flexible, conformable foam — adapts to body contours and irregular wound surfaces
- Can be cut to fit without compromising dressing integrity
Application & Use Guide
- Cleanse the wound and dry the surrounding skin before application — do not mix with other topical treatments or cleansing agents that may interact with silver
- Select a size that covers the wound and extends onto intact surrounding skin by approximately 1 inch on all sides — or cut the dressing to fit the wound shape as needed
- Remove half of the backing paper and position the dressing over the wound, then remove the second half of the backing to complete coverage
- Press the Safetac border gently against the periwound skin to complete the seal
- If the dressing is not self-adhering on all wound sites (e.g. on a limb or torso without sufficient periwound skin contact), secure with Mepitac silicone tape or a light compression bandage
- Change when exudate reaches the dressing edge, or every 7 days maximum — whichever comes first
- For infected wounds: change frequency should follow clinical guidance and be based on wound assessment at each change
- Remove before any MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, TENS unit, or electrocardiogram procedure
Choosing the Right Size
- 4" x 5" (287090) — Rectangular option for small elongated wounds — minor heel injuries, small venous ulcers, finger or toe wounds
- 4" x 4" (287100) — Standard square — the most common general-purpose size; ideal for small pressure injuries, focal diabetic foot wounds, and standard wound sites
- 4" x 8" (287200) — Rectangle — best for elongated wounds on extremities, linear post-surgical sites, or shin and lower leg ulcers
- 6" x 6" (287300) — Medium square — pressure ulcers and wounds requiring wider coverage than the 4x4 but where a rectangular shape isn't ideal
- 8" x 8" (287400) — Large square — larger pressure injuries, greater trochanter wounds, and deeper stage wounds with wide wound margins
- 8" x 20" (287500) — Large rectangle — partial thickness burns, large donor sites, extensive leg ulcer coverage, or any wound requiring maximum area coverage

Important Precautions
- Not for use in individuals with known silver sensitivity
- Remove before MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, electrotherapy (TENS), or electrocardiogram
- May cause temporary discoloration of wound or periwound skin — this is a known effect of ionic silver and does not indicate a reaction
- Does not replace systemic antibiotic therapy when systemic infection is present — consult a clinician
- Single use only — do not re-sterilize
- Do not use on internal wounds
- Do not combine with other topical wound treatments without clinical guidance
