Description

Mölnlycke Mepitel Ag — Only Antimicrobial Contact Layer With Safetac, 8-Day Silver Protection, 6 Sizes

The original less-pain silicone contact layer — now with silver sulphate antimicrobial protection for up to 8 days. Mepitel Ag is the only antimicrobial wound contact layer that combines Mölnlycke's patented Safetac soft silicone adhesion technology with ionic silver sulphate — delivering broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal protection while maintaining the gentle, pain-free dressing change experience that Mepitel is clinically renowned for. The open polyamide mesh structure allows exudate to pass freely upward into a secondary absorbent dressing while the Safetac silicone layer seals gently around the wound edges — preventing maceration of periwound skin without adhering to the wound bed or granulating tissue. Mepitel Ag can be left in place for up to 8 days while the secondary dressing is changed more frequently, reducing the number of times the wound contact surface is disturbed and allowing undisturbed wound healing to progress. Effective across the full range of low to high exudate wounds, cuts to any shape, and works under compression bandaging.

✔ Only Antimicrobial Contact Layer With Safetac — Unique to Mepitel Ag Worldwide    ✔ Silver Sulphate — Inactivates Pathogens Within 4 Hours, Effective Up to 8 Days    ✔ Safetac Silicone — Pain-Free, Zero Tissue Disruption at Every Dressing Change    ✔ Stay-In-Place Design — Secondary Dressing Changed Independently, Contact Layer Undisturbed    ✔ Compression Compatible — Full Performance Under Bandages & Wraps

Indicated For — Wound Types

  • Partial thickness burns — the primary clinical indication, widely used in burn unit protocols
  • Skin graft sites — partial and full thickness grafts, donor sites
  • Skin tears and abrasions
  • Sutured and surgical wounds requiring antimicrobial protection at the wound surface
  • Infected or at-risk wounds requiring a contact layer with active antimicrobial activity
  • Venous leg ulcers — including under compression therapy
  • Arterial ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers
  • Lacerations requiring a non-adherent antimicrobial interface
  • Any exuding wound where pain at dressing change is a concern and antimicrobial activity is clinically indicated
  • Wounds requiring repeated secondary dressing changes while minimizing contact layer disturbance

Note: Use with caution in patients with known sensitivity to silver compounds. Mepitel Ag maintains structural integrity up to 8 days — do not leave in place beyond this period. For highly infected wounds follow local clinical protocols for antimicrobial wound management.

How Mepitel Ag Works — What Makes It Different

Most antimicrobial wound contact layers — silver alginates, silver Hydrofiber, silver foam — are designed to absorb exudate as part of their antimicrobial mechanism. This means they must be removed with the secondary dressing at every dressing change, disrupting the wound surface and any granulation tissue that has formed against the contact layer. Mepitel Ag takes a fundamentally different approach. The polyamide mesh is not absorbent — exudate passes through it freely into the secondary dressing above. The Safetac silicone coating on the mesh seals gently around the wound edges without bonding to the wound bed, allowing the contact layer to remain in place undisturbed while only the saturated secondary dressing is replaced. This means the antimicrobial silver sulphate stays in continuous contact with the wound surface throughout the full 8-day wear period, bacteria are inactivated within 4 hours of initial application and re-inactivated continuously thereafter, and the wound bed is never disrupted by contact layer removal until the full wear period is complete.

  • Only antimicrobial contact layer with Safetac technology — unique combination not available in any other product
  • Silver sulphate inactivates bacteria and fungi within 4 hours — rapid onset antimicrobial action
  • Sustained silver activity for up to 8 days — continuous antimicrobial protection throughout the wear period
  • Safetac silicone seals around wound edges — prevents maceration of periwound skin without adhering to wound bed
  • Open mesh structure — exudate passes freely and vertically into secondary dressing, no pooling at wound surface
  • Stay-in-place design — secondary dressing changed without disturbing the wound contact surface
  • Leaves no residue — does not dry out, maintains properties throughout wear
  • Transparent — wound visible for inspection without removing the contact layer
  • Cut to any shape — adapts to irregular wound geometries without compromising performance
  • Conforms to body contours — flexible and comfortable under compression and clothing
  • Compression compatible — full silver and Safetac performance maintained under bandaging

Safetac Technology — The Original Less-Pain Silicone Contact Layer

Safetac is Mölnlycke's patented soft silicone adhesive technology — the original and most clinically studied less-pain wound contact system in the world. The silicone bonds gently to intact dry skin around the wound margins and seals the contact layer against exudate leakage onto periwound skin, but critically does not bond to the moist wound surface itself. At dressing change the contact layer peels away from surrounding skin with minimal force and zero adhesion to the wound bed — no tearing of granulation tissue, no epidermal stripping of periwound skin, and no pain from dressing removal. In Mepitel Ag the Safetac coating is applied to the silver sulphate polyamide mesh, adding the pain-free contact benefit of the standard Mepitel range to the antimicrobial clinical requirement — allowing clinicians to treat infected and at-risk wounds without subjecting patients to the painful dressing changes typically associated with silver dressings.

  • Soft silicone bonds to intact dry skin — seals wound edges against exudate leakage
  • Does not bond to moist wound surface — zero adhesion to wound bed or granulating tissue
  • Peels away from periwound skin with minimal force — no epidermal stripping
  • Dramatically reduces dressing change pain — clinically proven in burns, graft sites, and chronic wounds
  • Repositionable on initial application — can be adjusted for precise wound coverage before final placement
  • Does not leave residue — silicone remains on the dressing, not on the wound or skin

Choosing the Right Size

  • 390590 — 2" x 3" (5cm x 7.5cm) — 10/box — Smallest size — ideal for minor wounds, skin tears, toe and finger wounds, small lacerations, and compact surgical sites requiring antimicrobial contact layer coverage
  • 390790 — 3" x 4" (7.5cm x 10cm) — 10/box — Small-medium — general purpose size for small pressure injuries, abrasions, small venous ulcers, and sutured wounds
  • 391090 — 4" x 7" (10cm x 18cm) — 10/box — Standard medium — the most widely used size for leg ulcers, medium pressure injuries, partial thickness burns, and general wound management
  • 390090 — 4" x 5" (10cm x 12cm) — 10/box — Medium square — broader coverage for wounds requiring a more square contact layer footprint rather than elongated
  • 392090 — 8" x 12" (20cm x 30cm) — 5/box — Large — extensive wound coverage for large burns, large graft sites, multiple adjacent wounds, and wounds requiring maximum contact layer area
  • 392059 — 8" x 20" (20cm x 50cm) — 2/box — Largest size — full limb burns, extensive graft coverage, large donor sites, and any application requiring maximum single-piece contact layer coverage — can be cut to any shape needed

Application Tip: Select a size that overlaps onto intact periwound skin by at least 1cm on all sides — the Safetac silicone seals against this intact skin margin. Apply with the printed side facing up. The contact layer can be cut to any shape before application. Cover with an appropriate absorbent secondary dressing.
