Clinical FAQs
What does "Firm" mean and why does catheter body firmness matter in a closed-system format?
In intermittent catheters, firmness describes the rigidity and stiffness of the catheter body material. A firm catheter holds its shape under the forces of insertion, providing better directional control and the ability to advance through mild urethral resistance at the external sphincter or through the natural curvature of the male urethra. This is especially relevant in a closed-system catheter, where the catheter is advanced through a protective sleeve housing during insertion — a mechanism that benefits from a catheter body firm enough to push reliably through the housing and into the urethra without kinking or folding. For patients with neurogenic bladder and elevated sphincter tone, a firm body is often preferred for its predictable advancement. The Soft variants (B12S, B14S) use a more pliable PVC formulation for patients who prefer a gentler feel and whose anatomy allows reliable insertion without needing a firm body.
This page includes both straight-tip closed-system coudé variants (B12C/B14C/B16C) and there is a separate Apogee Plus Coudé Closed Kit (B12CB) — what is the difference?
Both are coudé-tip closed-system catheters with the same Apogee Plus touch-free design and 1500mL collection bag. The key difference is what else is included. The coudé variants on this page (B12C, B14C, B16C) are catheter-and-bag only — the same components as the firm straight-tip versions, just with a coudé tip. The Apogee Plus Coudé Closed Kit (B12CB, B14CB, B16CB) is a complete supply kit: it additionally includes gloves, an underpad drape, PVP antiseptic swab sticks, and gauze for a full sterile-technique catheterization preparation. If your prescribed protocol requires antiseptic preparation supplies packaged with each catheterization, the Coudé Closed Kit is the appropriate order. If you source supplies separately or your clinician specifies clean technique, the coudé variant on this page provides the coudé tip and closed-system bag without the kit add-ons.
Is the female version (B14FF) a true closed system and how does it differ from male closed-system catheters?
Yes — the Apogee Plus Female (B14FF) is a full closed-system catheter: it includes the same touch-free protective tip, pre-lubricated gel, integrated 1500mL collection bag, side-loaded design, and hygiene cap as the male versions. The catheter itself is 6" (15cm) in length, appropriate for adult female urethral anatomy, compared to the 16" male versions. The French size available in the female configuration is 14Fr. The same closed-system advantages apply: no toilet access required during catheterization, sealed drainage path, and touch-free tip protection. For women who catheterize in public, at work, or in other settings where toilet positioning is difficult or private bathroom access is limited, the female closed-system catheter provides the same independence that male closed-system users benefit from.
Why does the male firm line start at 6Fr — most closed-system catheters start at 12Fr or 14Fr?
The Apogee Plus Firm closed-system line starts at 6Fr (B6F) to serve patients with smaller French-size prescriptions who still need or prefer the infection-control and access advantages of a closed system. Patients with tighter urethral anatomy, patients requiring smaller French sizes due to urethral sensitivity, and some patients with specific neurological conditions are prescribed smaller French sizes regardless of whether they use open or closed catheters. Offering the closed-system format down to 6Fr allows these patients the same closed-system options as users prescribed 12Fr or 14Fr. The touch-free tip and 1500mL bag function identically across all sizes.
How is the collection bag disposed of after use?
Once catheterization is complete and urine has stopped flowing, reinsert the catheter into the protective housing and replace the hygiene cap over the introducer tip. To empty the bag before disposal, locate the tear strip in the corner of the collection bag and open it; pour urine into a toilet, urinal, or disposal receptacle. The used kit — with the hygiene cap replaced — can then be wrapped and placed in a standard waste bin. Do not flush the catheter or bag components down the toilet. Wash hands after disposal. The sealed, capped kit is designed to be discreet and contained during transport from the catheterization site to the waste bin.
