Ferris PolyMem WIC Silver — Rope & Cavity Wound Filler, Cleanses + Fills + Absorbs + Silver, 2 Formats
Four simultaneous wound actions — cleanse, fill, absorb, and moisten — with silver antimicrobial protection built in. Ferris PolyMem WIC Silver is a hydrophilic polymeric membrane matrix wound filler uniquely formulated with small-particle silver to manage deep tunneling wounds, cavity wounds, undermining, and sinus tracts where standard flat dressings cannot reach the wound base. Available in two configurations — a Rope format for tunneling and deep sinus tract wounds, and a flat Cavity format for shallow cavity and undermined wounds — PolyMem WIC Silver performs four distinct wound management actions simultaneously: it cleanses the wound by drawing contaminants into the matrix, fills dead space by expanding within the cavity to eliminate the void where bacteria can proliferate, absorbs exudate by holding up to 6 times its weight in wound fluid, and moistens dry wound areas by donating fluid when the wound bed is drier than the dressing. The silver particles distributed throughout the matrix release silver ions as exudate is absorbed — providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial protection directly at the wound base where infection risk is highest.
✔ Four-Action Technology — Cleanses, Fills, Absorbs & Moistens Simultaneously ✔ Silver Antimicrobial — Kills 99%+ of Tested Organisms, Released at the Wound Base ✔ Expands Within the Cavity — Fills Dead Space, Eliminates Bacterial Hiding Space ✔ Reinforced Mesh — Maintains Integrity, One-Piece Removal Every Time ✔ Made in USA — FSA Eligible

Indicated For — Wound Types
- Deep tunneling wounds — the primary indication for the Rope format (1814)
- Sinus tracts requiring antimicrobial wound filler with structural integrity for full removal
- Cavity wounds with dead space — shallow and deep, including undermining
- Pressure ulcers with cavity or tunneling components
- Venous leg ulcers with cavity or significant depth
- Diabetic foot ulcers with tunneling or undermining
- Post-surgical cavities and wounds left to heal by secondary intention
- Acute and chronic wounds with moderate to heavy exudate and cavity or depth
- Infected or at-risk cavity wounds requiring silver antimicrobial activity at the wound base
- Wounds requiring simultaneous moisture donation and exudate absorption depending on wound bed condition
Note: PolyMem WIC Silver is a primary wound filler — a secondary dressing is required over the top. Do not pack the wound too tightly — the dressing expands by approximately one-third and requires room to accommodate that expansion. For infected wounds follow local clinical protocols for antimicrobial wound management.
How It Works — Four-Action Technology With Silver
Standard wound fillers — alginate rope, gauze packing, CMC ribbon — typically perform one or two functions: absorb exudate and fill space. PolyMem WIC Silver performs four simultaneous, distinct wound management actions through the unique properties of its hydrophilic polymeric membrane matrix. As the dressing is placed in the wound cavity and encounters wound fluid, the matrix activates — drawing contaminants and debris into the polymer structure through a cleansing action, swelling by approximately one-third to fill the dead space where bacteria can concentrate and proliferate, absorbing exudate from the wound bed up into the matrix structure, and simultaneously donating moisture back to dry areas of the wound where the dressing has more fluid than the wound bed. This bidirectional moisture management is what distinguishes PolyMem from standard wound fillers that can only absorb — PolyMem WIC Silver adapts to the wound's moisture status throughout the wear period. The small-particle silver distributed throughout the matrix is released as silver ions in the presence of exudate — delivering bactericidal activity directly at the wound base and throughout the full depth of tunneling or cavity wounds where topical antiseptics applied at the surface cannot reach.
- Cleanses — polymer matrix draws contaminants, bacteria, and debris into the dressing structure away from the wound bed
- Fills — expands approximately one-third within the cavity to eliminate dead space where infection proliferates
- Absorbs — holds up to 6–10 times its own weight in exudate, managing moderate to heavy wound drainage
- Moistens — donates fluid to dry wound areas when the dressing carries more moisture than the wound bed requires
- Silver ions released during absorption — antimicrobial activity delivered at the wound base, not just the surface
- Kills 99%+ of tested organisms per independent study — broad-spectrum bactericidal activity
- Reinforced medical-grade mesh maintains structural integrity throughout wear — one-piece removal, no fragmentation
- Pain relief noted clinically — PolyMem technology has demonstrated wound pain reduction in published studies
- Bidirectional moisture management — absorbs or donates depending on wound bed condition, preventing both maceration and desiccation

The Reinforced Mesh — Why It Matters for Deep Wound Removal
Removing wound fillers from tunneling and deep cavity wounds is one of the most clinically challenging dressing change steps — standard alginate ropes and gauze packing fragment on removal, leaving fibers and debris in the wound base that must be irrigated out and can introduce secondary contamination. PolyMem WIC Silver addresses this directly with a medical-grade mesh reinforcement woven throughout the polymer matrix. The mesh maintains the structural cohesion of the rope or pad even after it has absorbed heavily and expanded — so when the clinician withdraws the filler from the wound, it comes out in one piece, intact, with no material left behind. This is a clinically significant patient safety and efficiency advantage — particularly for deep tunneling wounds where visual inspection of the wound base after removal is difficult and retained material may not be apparent.
- Medical-grade mesh woven throughout polymer matrix — maintains structural integrity under heavy absorption and expansion
- One-piece removal from tunnels and deep cavities — no fragmentation, no retained material
- Particularly critical in deep sinus tracts where retained dressing material cannot be visually confirmed
- Reduces irrigation requirement after removal — no loose fibers to flush from the wound base
- Improves clinician confidence at dressing change — no need to count pieces or confirm complete removal
Choosing the Right Format
| Item # | Format & Size | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|
| 1814 | Rope — ¼" x 14" (0.4" x 14") | Tunneling wounds, deep sinus tracts, undermining that requires the filler to be threaded into a narrow tract — reinforced mesh ensures full one-piece withdrawal from depth. Can be cut to length as needed. |
| 1333 | Cavity Pad — 3" x 3" | Shallow cavity wounds, broad undermined areas, and wounds with cavity depth but wider opening where the flat pad format fits more naturally than a rope. Pre-slit and perforated — easily separates into three 1" wide strips to fit the wound size. Can be cut to shape. |
Application Tips: For the Rope format — loosely fill the wound tract without packing tightly, leaving room for the approximately one-third expansion on absorption. For the Cavity format — separate into strips as needed using the pre-slit perforations to match the wound dimensions. Cover with an appropriate secondary dressing. Sterile saline or water can be added to pre-moisten the dressing if the wound is dry and faster moisture donation is needed.
