The longer-sheath version of the Rochester Spirit hydrocolloid external male catheter line. Where the Spirit Style 2 provides a 1.5" sheath with 1.75" adhesive width, the Style 3 offers a 3" sheath and 3" adhesive width — nearly double the adhesive contact area. The greater adhesive coverage supports a more secure fit for patients who experience frequent detachment with shorter-sheath designs, those with retractile penile anatomy, and more active users whose movement challenges shorter-sheath adhesion. Same 100% silicone construction, hydrocolloid moisture-wicking adhesive, clear sheath for skin inspection, kink-resistant design, and 24-hour change recommendation as the Style 2. Who should choose the Style 3 over the Style 2, and when is the longer sheath clinically preferable?
The Style 2 and Style 3 share identical materials, adhesive type, and wear guidelines — the only structural difference is sheath and adhesive length. The Style 3's longer sheath and greater adhesive width are specifically advantageous for three patient scenarios. First, patients with retractile penile anatomy — where the penis naturally retracts toward the body during activity or in cold environments — benefit from the greater sheath length, which maintains coverage and adhesive contact even when retraction reduces the exposed penile shaft length. A 1.5" sheath may lift or roll off with significant retraction; a 3" sheath has more surface to work with. Second, active patients who engage in significant physical activity — walking, transfers, exercise — may experience more mechanical stress on the catheter-skin interface; the Style 3's greater adhesive area resists this stress more effectively. Third, patients who have consistently experienced premature detachment, leakage, or rolling with the Style 2 despite correct sizing and application technique are good candidates to trial the Style 3 before exploring other catheter designs.
Does the longer sheath affect comfort or require any different application technique?
Application technique is identical to the Style 2: wash and dry the penis thoroughly, trim pubic hair, place the rolled catheter over the penile tip, unroll slowly down the shaft leaving a small gap at the funnel end, and squeeze to bond the adhesive. The longer sheath requires the same deliberate, wrinkle-free unrolling technique — wrinkles in a 3" sheath have more opportunity to create gaps and leakage pathways than wrinkles in a 1.5" sheath, so smooth unrolling is if anything more important on the Style 3. Some patients find that the longer sheath provides a more confident, stable feel during wear; others find the shorter Style 2 easier to manage during application. Why is the 25mm Small size not available in Style 3?
A 3" sheath on a 25mm diameter catheter presents proportional fitting challenges — the small diameter combined with the longer sheath length increases the likelihood of wrinkles and uneven adhesive contact on the shaft, particularly in patients who need 25mm because their anatomy is at the smaller end of the sizing range. The Style 2's shorter 1.5" sheath is more appropriately matched to the 25mm diameter for correct fit and function. Patients requiring a 25mm catheter should use the Spirit Style 2 (SKU 37301). Patients requiring 29mm or larger who need greater adhesive coverage have the Style 3 available.
