A 1000mL urine collection bag worn discreetly around the waist — designed for patients using indwelling Foley or suprapubic catheters who require secure, hands-free drainage during daily activity and overnight. The waist-mounted design keeps the bag positioned below the bladder at all times while eliminating the visibility and positioning constraints of a leg bag. Anti-reflux valve prevents urine backflow. Soft fabric backing protects the abdomen from chafing. Adjustable quick-release waistband fits male and female users. Prescription required. FSA/HSA eligible. Sold individually or 10/box.

Key Features

  • Waist-worn design — bag sits at the abdomen/waist rather than on the leg or at a bedside; positioned below bladder level at all times for correct gravity drainage
  • 1000mL (1 liter) capacity — sufficient for extended day wear and overnight use without frequent emptying
  • Anti-reflux valve — prevents backflow of collected urine toward the catheter
  • Adjustable quick-release waistband — fits a range of waist sizes; quick-release buckle allows fast removal and repositioning
  • Soft fabric backing — textile surface contacts the skin rather than bare plastic; reduces chafing and skin irritation from extended wear
  • Discreet profile — sits under clothing at the abdomen without the visible leg bag strap outline
  • Unisex — compatible with male and female users
  • Day and overnight wear — designed for continuous 24-hour use
  • Compatible with Foley and suprapubic catheters — for indwelling catheter systems only

Clinical FAQs

What is a belly bag and how is it different from a leg bag or bedside bag?

A belly bag is a urine collection bag worn around the waist or abdomen rather than strapped to the thigh or calf (leg bag) or hung on a bedside rail (bedside bag). The three drainage bag positions each serve different patient needs. Leg bags sit on the upper or lower leg and are discreet under long pants, but they require the drainage tube to travel down the leg from the catheter — they can slide or pull, and the straps can cause skin indentation or discomfort with extended wear. Bedside bags (1500mL–4000mL) hang on a stand or bed rail and are used primarily overnight or for immobile patients. The belly bag fills the gap between these formats: it is worn continuously day and night on the abdomen, the drainage tube connection is shorter and more direct for suprapubic catheter users, and the waist belt holds the bag securely in place without leg straps. The abdomen/waist position also naturally maintains the bag below bladder level without the patient needing to manage positioning during movement.

What is a suprapubic catheter and why is the belly bag particularly well-suited for it?

A suprapubic catheter (SPC) is an indwelling catheter inserted directly into the bladder through a small incision in the lower abdominal wall — above the pubic bone — rather than through the urethra. It is used for patients with urethral damage, stricture, or obstruction that makes transurethral catheterization impossible or contraindicated, and for patients where long-term indwelling catheterization is preferred and urethral access is undesirable. Because the suprapubic catheter tube exits the skin at the lower abdomen, connecting it to a waist-worn belly bag positions the bag directly adjacent to the tube exit site — requiring less tube length, reducing the distance the urine must travel, and eliminating the need to route tubing down the leg. For patients managing a suprapubic catheter long-term, the belly bag is often the most practical and anatomically appropriate drainage format.

This says it is not for intermittent catheter use — why not?

The Belly Bag is designed for indwelling catheter systems — Foley catheters and suprapubic catheters that remain in the bladder continuously and drain urine as it is produced. Intermittent catheters are inserted, drain the bladder, and are immediately removed at each catheterization session. An intermittent catheter user would need to disconnect the belly bag for most of their daily routine, since the bag is only receiving urine during the brief catheterization window. For intermittent catheter users who need a collection bag during catheterization, the closed-system catheters with integrated bags (Apogee Plus, SpeediCath Compact Set) available in the MDS catalog serve that purpose within the catheter itself. The Belly Bag is specifically for patients whose catheter is in place all day and night, continuously producing drainage.

Can the belly bag be worn overnight as well as during the day?

Yes — the belly bag is designed for continuous 24-hour wear. For overnight use, the patient typically does not need to change bag position when moving from wheelchair or chair to bed, since the waist belt maintains bag position regardless of whether the patient is seated, standing, or lying down. The 1000mL capacity is sufficient for typical overnight urine production for most adults. Patients who produce high overnight urine volumes may still prefer to connect to a larger bedside bag for overnight use and return to the belly bag during the day — this is a personal management preference that should be discussed with the managing clinician.

What does the sample drain port on the B1000P add?

The sample drain port on the B1000P is a self-sealing port that allows a urine specimen to be withdrawn for laboratory testing without disconnecting the catheter from the bag. For long-term indwelling catheter users who require periodic urinalysis or urine cultures — to monitor for catheter-associated UTIs or to track other urological conditions — the sample port maintains the closed drainage system while allowing specimen collection. This is the same function as the EZ-LOK sampling port on the Bard Bedside Drainage Bag, applied to the belly bag format. If your clinical protocol requires regular urine specimen collection, the B1000P is the appropriate variant.
