Smith & Nephew OpSite Transparent Adhesive Film Dressing — Waterproof, Breathable, 8 Sizes
The original standard in transparent film wound dressings — still setting it. OpSite by Smith & Nephew is a highly extensible, conformable polyurethane transparent film dressing with a superior acrylic adhesive that has defined moist wound care for decades. The film creates a moist wound environment by retaining natural wound exudate while its high moisture vapor permeability allows excess moisture to evaporate — preventing the maceration that occurs under less breathable films. Waterproof and resistant to body fluids, allowing patients to bathe without dressing changes. Acts as a barrier to bacteria including MRSA, and aids in prevention of bacterial contamination to reduce infection risk. Transparent and non-glare for continuous wound site observation. Available in 8 sizes from 4 x 5-1/2 inch through 17-3/4 x 21-5/8 inch — covering standard wound coverage through large surgical and post-operative applications.
✔ Moisture Vapor Permeable — Retains Exudate, Prevents Maceration ✔ Waterproof — Resistant to Water & Body Fluids ✔ Bacterial Barrier — Including MRSA ✔ Highly Extensible & Conformable — Adapts to Awkward Areas ✔ Acrylic Adhesive — Minimizes Risk of Skin Damage on Removal ✔ Up to 7-Day Wear

They share the same film and adhesive technology as the standard wound dressing line — the larger format makes them appropriate for both extensive wound coverage and operative draping applications.
Indicated For — Wound Types & Applications
- Superficial wounds — shallow pressure sores, minor burns, cuts, scalds, and abrasions
- Primary dressing for clean, low-exuding wounds in the granulation and healing phase
- Secondary dressing over primary wound fillers — INTRASITE Gel, ALLEVYN Cavity, and other hydrogels or cavity dressings
- Catheter fixation — IV, PICC, and central line sites
- Closed surgical wounds and post-operative sites
- Skin graft donor sites
- Leg ulcers in final healing stage
- Protection of periostomal skin and under leg bags
- Prophylaxis against pressure sores — friction and external contamination prevention
- Surgical incise drape — larger sizes (4986–4989) maintain sterile operative field
- Relief of pain in painful diabetic neuropathy (as adjunct)
How OpSite Works — Film & Adhesive Technology
OpSite has set the clinical standard for transparent film wound dressings through a combination of film performance and adhesive design that many transparent films have since tried to replicate:
- Moist wound environment — the film retains natural wound exudate at the wound bed, preventing scab formation and wound dehydration while supporting the body's own healing process. The balanced moisture retention is what drives faster, less disruptive healing in superficial wounds.
- High moisture vapor permeability (MVTR) — excess moisture vapor passes through the film, preventing the moisture accumulation under the dressing that leads to maceration of periwound skin. This balance — retaining enough moisture, releasing excess — is the core of the OpSite film design.
- Superior acrylic adhesive — bonds firmly to dry and moist skin while minimizing the risk of skin damage on removal. The adhesive maintains attachment through the full wear period without requiring aggressive removal force that strips fragile periwound skin.
- Highly extensible and conformable film — stretches significantly in all directions to adapt to body contours including heels, elbows, knees, and other anatomically challenging sites where standard films fold or lift. Can be cut to strips or custom shapes before application.
- Waterproof barrier — resists water and body fluid penetration, allowing patients to bathe without dressing removal. Also prevents external bacterial contamination from reaching the wound site.
- Bacterial barrier including MRSA — transparent film provides physical separation between the wound bed and external environment, reducing risk of secondary infection from airborne and contact bacteria.
- Transparent, non-glare surface — allows continuous visual inspection of the wound site without dressing removal; non-glare surface ensures clear visibility under clinical lighting.
OpSite vs. Other Smith & Nephew Transparent Film Dressings

Application Instructions
- Gently clean the wound and dry the surrounding skin thoroughly
- Select the appropriate size — the dressing should overlap the wound edges by at least 2–3 cm on all sides
- Remove the first backing paper — do not touch the adhesive surface
- Place the dressing over the wound with light pressure; use the transparency for accurate positioning
- Remove the second backing paper and smooth the dressing down from center outward, pressing around all edges
- Monitor the wound through the transparent film at each clinical visit — change when exudate approaches the dressing edges or at 7 days maximum
- To remove: lift one corner and slowly stretch the film parallel to the skin — do not pull perpendicular, particularly on fragile or thin skin
