Thin liquids move too fast for a weakened swallow

After a stroke, with Parkinson's, dementia, ALS, head and neck cancer, or simply with age, the muscles that protect the airway during a swallow can weaken. Thin liquids like water and coffee move quickly and can slip into the airway before the swallow closes it off, causing coughing, choking, or aspiration pneumonia. Thickening those liquids slows them down, giving the swallow time to work. A speech-language pathologist usually decides how thick each person's drinks need to be. Thick-It lets caregivers match that recommendation at home with any drink or food the person enjoys.

Concentrated vs Original

Concentrated — Less Powder, Fewer Calories The concentrated formula thickens with a smaller amount of powder, so each serving adds fewer calories and carbohydrates. Made from modified cornstarch and sugar-free — a good fit for people with diabetes or on calorie-controlled diets.
Original — Also Available Thick-It Original (modified food starch and maltodextrin) comes in canisters and pre-measured nectar and honey packets. Both work the same way. Because the concentrated formula uses a different amount per serving, always follow the mixing chart on the container you're using.
Follow your care team's instructions. The right thickness is different for every person. Use the consistency your speech-language pathologist or physician prescribes, and follow the mixing directions on the Thick-It container for the drink or food you're thickening. How to Mix Thick-It

Measure Measure the amount of Thick-It Concentrated shown on the container for your drink type and prescribed consistency. Pour about 4 oz of liquid into a cup first.

Stir in briskly Add the powder and stir briskly with a fork or whisk until it dissolves. It mixes into hot or cold items.

Let it stand Let the drink sit so it can reach full thickness — about a minute for water and juice, longer for milk and nutritional shakes.

Stir and serve Stir again, check the consistency, and serve. For best results, serve soon after mixing.
