Mastectomy Bras & Breast Forms: What You Actually Need to Know

Updated: March 2026 | Written by our BOC Certified Mastectomy Fitters
We are not going to tell you that you'll feel beautiful the moment you walk out of a fitting room. That's not why you're here. You're here because you need a bra that fits after surgery, a breast form that works for your life, and real information — not marketing copy. If you have questions that aren't answered here, call the location nearest to you and speak with a BOC Certified Mastectomy Fitter directly.
When Should You Start Looking?
Most surgeons recommend waiting four to six weeks post-surgery before being professionally fitted for a breast form and pocketed bra. The chest wall needs time to heal and swelling will affect your measurements. In the weeks immediately following surgery, a soft post-surgical camisole or compression bra is typically what you'll wear — these don't require a form and are designed to be gentle on healing tissue.
Don't wait until you're in pain from a poor fit or until a bra you bought online doesn't work. Schedule your fitting appointment when your surgeon gives you the green light. Bring a close-fitting top, bring a friend or family member if that helps, and give yourself time — a good fitting is not a 10-minute errand.
If you've already been wearing a form for a while
Bodies change. Weight fluctuates, scar tissue shifts, and a form or bra that fit you two years ago may not be serving you well anymore. Annual or semi-annual fittings are recommended — if something feels off, don't wait.
What a BOC-Certified Fitting Actually Is
A BOC Certified Mastectomy Fitter (CMF) is a credentialed allied health professional — not a salesperson. They've completed formal coursework, documented patient care hours, and passed a national certification exam. Every mastectomy salon at Medical Department Store is staffed with BOC Certified Fitters.
Consultation
Your fitter asks about surgery type, post-op treatments like radiation, your lifestyle, and what you want to achieve. Private fitting room, always.
Assessment
The fitter assesses your chest wall and remaining tissue, and confirms the area has healed enough to wear a prosthesis and bra comfortably.
Measurements
Measurements at the chest, shoulder, and rib cage determine your bra band size and breast form size. These reference points differ from how you'd measure yourself at home.
Try-On & Selection
Your fitter brings options matched to your measurements and surgery type. You try them, you say what you think, the fitter adjusts. A conversation, not a presentation.
Insurance Navigation
Many plans cover mastectomy bras and prostheses with a prescription. Medicare covers one prosthesis per side every two years, and two bras per year. Your fitter helps with documentation.
Online vs. In-Store: Breast form sizing doesn't correspond to your bra size — it depends on specific chest wall measurements. Scar tissue affects fit. An online chart is a starting point; a BOC Certified Fitter is a solution. If you've already been fitted and know your size, our online store ships nationwide.

Mastectomy Bra Styles: What's the Difference?
All mastectomy bras have built-in pockets to hold a breast form securely. Beyond that, the differences matter for fit, comfort, and how you actually live your life.
| Style | Best For | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Back Closure | Everyday wear; traditional bra feel | Widest selection; adjustable band and full support |
| Front Closure | Limited shoulder mobility; early post-op | Opens in front — easier to put on and take off |
| Leisure / Sleep | At-home comfort; early healing; sleeping | No underwire, soft build, pockets for light forms |
| Sports / Active | Exercise, walking, Florida outdoor life | Moisture-wicking, firm support, pockets stay put |
| Camisole | Post-surgery; daily lounge; travel | Built-in shelf bra with pockets; no separate bra needed |
| Underwire | Maximum shaping; formal wear | Structured projection; requires fully healed chest wall |
Back Closure Bras
The most common style with the widest selection. The Classique 722 is seamless cotton — 83% cotton, 17% spandex — with entirely hidden seams for all-day comfort. The ABC Massage Bra Style 525 uses a textured massage-like fabric with padded straps and a wider elastic band, ideal for extended wear or skin sensitivity.

Sports & Active Bras
Standard mastectomy bra pockets aren't designed for movement. Sports bras use structured pockets, firmer fabric, and moisture-wicking construction. In Florida's heat, breathability matters as much as support.

Secure pockets and supportive construction. Form stays put during movement.

Camisoles & Leisure
Camisoles with built-in pockets work as all-in-one tops — no separate bra needed. Good for travel, early post-surgical wear, and days when you want coverage without a bra. The ABC Kalena Camisole and Almost U Style 1200 both have integrated form pockets.
Breast Forms: Silicone, Lightweight, Foam & Swim
| Type | Feel & Weight | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Silicone | Closest to natural tissue; full weight | Everyday wear; best symmetry and appearance |
| Lightweight Silicone | ~30% lighter; natural look and drape | All-day comfort; back or shoulder issues |
| Foam / Leisure | Very light; soft; not weighted | Home wear; sleeping; early post-surgery |
| Swim Forms | Water-safe; holds shape; won't absorb water | Pool, beach, all water activities |
| Partial / Shapers | Thin, tapered; fills specific areas | Lumpectomy; reconstruction; balance |
Shape Guide: Which Form Matches Your Surgery
Triangle — most common; fills a standard bra cup. Teardrop / Curved — for surgeries that removed underarm tissue. Symmetrical — wearable on either side. Asymmetrical — side-specific. Partial / Shaper — fills part of the cup; for lumpectomy or reconstruction where tissue remains.
Important — sizing
Breast form sizing is NOT your bra cup size. Each brand uses its own system based on chest wall measurements. ABC, Amoena, Trulife, and Almost U all differ. This is the most important reason to be fitted in person — or use the brand-specific chart before ordering online.
Brand Breakdown: ABC, Amoena, Trulife & Almost U
American Breast Care (ABC)
One of the most widely carried U.S. brands. ABC's Massage Form line uses ultra-soft silicone with a shallow profile that mimics mature breast tissue. Ultra-thin edges prevent visible crossover at the bra edge — important under fitted clothing. Strong sports bra and activewear lineup.
Forms carried: Classic Triangle Lightweight (1072) · Standard Triangle (1044) · Massage Form Asymmetric (10225) · Teardrop Shaper (11204) · Oval Swim (930) · Swim Form (931) · Triangle Puff (910)
Amoena
The original silicone breast form innovator, founded 1975. ComfortPlus with Outlast® technology regulates temperature between the form and chest wall — meaningful in Florida's heat and for women experiencing hot flashes. Contact forms attach directly to the chest, distributing weight across the chest rather than the shoulder.
Forms carried: Essential 2E (474) · Natura 1S (396) with ComfortPlus · Essential 2S (440) · Isabel Wire-Free Camisole (2118)
Trulife
Trulife's Silk collection is 30% lighter than standard silicone with a natural drape many women describe as closest to real tissue movement. Largest selection of partial forms for lumpectomy and reconstruction — all with tapered edges. The 356 Teardrop Partial Encore is specifically for uneven appearance after reconstruction.
Forms carried: 356 Teardrop Partial Encore · 485 Silk Curve · 151 Sublime Aris · 478 Harmony Silk Xtend · 473 Silk Teardrop · 630 Active Flow Triangle Swim
Almost U
Primarily bras — value and variety. Bandeau, long-line, seamless cotton, lace accent, dual-closure — most at lower price points than ABC or Amoena. A strong choice for a second or third bra. Their lightweight tri-side forms suit women who prefer lighter-weight wear.
Forms carried: Style 403 Lightweight Rounded Tri-Side · Style 302 Tri-Side Shell Regular Weight · Style 203 Lightweight Tri-Side
Swim Forms & Active Life in Florida
If you swim, walk the beach, or use a pool regularly, a dedicated swim form is not optional — it protects your everyday silicone form. Standard silicone forms are not designed for chlorine or salt water. Extended water exposure degrades them and voids most manufacturer warranties.
Swim forms move with the water, retain their shape, and won't absorb moisture. The ABC 930 Oval Swim Form, ABC 931, and Trulife 630 Active Flow Triangle Swim Form are stocked at all five salons.
Pair with mastectomy swimwear
A swim form in a regular swimsuit will shift and won't stay secure. Mastectomy swimwear has built-in pockets designed to hold the form properly. We carry mastectomy swimwear at all five locations.
Leisure & Foam Forms: What They're Actually For
Foam forms are not a compromise — they're the right tool for the right situation. The Nearly Me 560 Casual Weighted Foam Triangle and Nearly Me 550 Casual Weighted Foam Classic are for at-home use, sleeping, and low-activity days. The ABC 910 Triangle Puff is another light-use option.
Many women keep two forms: silicone for going out, foam for evenings at home. It extends the life of the silicone form and is more comfortable for extended low-activity wear.
Sizing: Use the Right Chart for the Right Brand
Each brand's sizing system is different. Using the wrong chart means the wrong form. Downloadable sizing guides:

Insurance, Medicare & FSA
Most mastectomy bras and prostheses are FSA-eligible. Many insurance plans cover them with a physician's prescription. Medicare Part B covers one external breast prosthesis per side every two years, and two mastectomy bras per year.
Our BOC Certified Fitters can help with documentation and plan coordination. Call the nearest location before assuming you're paying out of pocket — you may have benefits you haven't used.
