Medical Department Store has carried the full Harmar lineup for over 25 years. This guide covers how vehicle lifts work, how to choose between inside, exterior, and truck-specific lifts, and which models are best suited for each situation. Every vehicle lift purchase requires a compatibility conversation before we ship — your vehicle, your device, and your physical capability all factor in. Call us first.

Before You Order — Read This Vehicle lift compatibility depends on your specific vehicle year, make, and model — and on the exact make and model of your mobility device. A lift that fits a Honda Odyssey may not fit a Chrysler Pacifica. We confirm fit before every order ships. Call us at 866-218-0902 or use the Harmar Compatibility Calculator as a starting point — then call us to verify.

How Vehicle Lifts Work — The Three Types

Inside / Hoist LiftsMounted inside the vehicle's cargo area — SUVs, vans, full-size trucks. A powered boom arm swings out over the rear bumper, hooks or docks onto the mobility device, lifts it, rotates it into the cargo area, and lowers it down. Device stays inside the vehicle during transit — backup camera maintained, cargo space used. Best for: vans, full-size SUVs, full-size trucks with adequate headroom.
Exterior / Hitch-Mount LiftsAttaches to the vehicle's trailer hitch at the rear. The mobility device rides on a platform outside and behind the vehicle during transit. No cargo space used. Easier operation. Works with most vehicle types regardless of cargo area size. Best for: sedans, crossovers, smaller SUVs, anyone who needs simpler operation or cannot load into a cargo area.
Pickup / Crew Cab Truck LiftsSpecialized inside hoist lifts engineered for the geometry of pickup truck beds and crew cab configurations. Standard truck lifts position the device close to the driver or passenger door. Crew cab variants have longer arms to reach over the extended cab length. Best for: standard cab, extended cab, and crew cab pickup trucks.

Before You Buy — What We Need to Confirm

Vehicle lifts are not one-size-fits-all purchases. Before we process any order, we confirm three things with every customer:

  • Your vehicle: Year, make, model, and trim — cargo headroom, hitch availability, and bed dimensions all vary significantly within the same brand.
  • Your mobility device: Make, model, weight, and dimensions — the lift must be rated for the weight and physically clear the device during loading.
  • Your physical capability: Inside hoist lifts require walking to the rear of the vehicle, standing during operation, and guiding the device. Exterior lifts are generally easier. We help you match the lift to your actual capability — not just your vehicle.

We offer local professional installation at all five of our Southwest Florida locations. For customers anywhere else in the country we coordinate professional installation through Harmar's nationwide authorized dealer network.

Inside Hoist Lifts — SUVs, Vans & Full-Size Trucks

Inside hoist lifts mount to the floor of your vehicle's cargo area and use a powered boom arm to swing out, hook onto your device, and bring it inside. The device travels inside the vehicle — protected from weather, out of sight, and with no impact on exterior vehicle length. Backup camera access is maintained in most configurations.

Maximum Capacity Platform · Large Cargo Vehicles

Harmar AL6000 Ultimate Inside Platform Lift

Where most inside hoists use a crane-style boom arm, the AL6000 uses a full platform — the device drives or rolls directly onto the deck, eliminating the need to hook or dock. Designed for the largest cargo vehicles where maximum payload and zero device modification is the priority. Call us to confirm vehicle fit — the AL6000 requires significant cargo area dimensions.

  • Style: Inside platform — drive-on/roll-on deck
  • Best for: Full-size vans, large SUVs with maximum cargo area
  • No device modification required

Pickup & Crew Cab Truck Lifts

Standard inside hoist lifts are engineered for van and SUV cargo areas. Pickup trucks present a different geometry — an open bed, a tailgate, and in crew cab configurations, a longer distance from the rear of the vehicle to the cab door. Harmar's truck-specific lifts are built around these realities.

Exterior / Hitch-Mount Lifts — Outside the Vehicle

Exterior hitch-mount lifts attach to your vehicle's trailer hitch and carry the mobility device outside and behind the vehicle during transit. No cargo space used. Easier operation. Works with most vehicles including sedans and crossovers that lack the cargo area for an inside lift. A hitch is required — most vehicles can be fitted with one.

Automatic · Power Chairs · Universal Fit

Harmar AL560XL Automatic Universal Power Chair Lift

Harmar's most capable automatic exterior lift for power wheelchairs — oversized platform with fully automatic hold-down, fully powered folding when not in use, and universal fit across most minivans, SUVs, trucks, and vans. No device modifications required. The XL extended platform handles larger power chairs that standard-platform exterior lifts cannot accommodate.

  • Style: Exterior hitch-mount · automatic · oversized platform
  • Best for: Power wheelchairs · most minivans, SUVs, trucks, vans
