How to choose the right odor-absorbent dressing
How does an odor-absorbent dressing work?
Odor-absorbent dressings contain an activated charcoal layer that works by adsorption — the volatile organic compounds and bacterial metabolites responsible for wound malodor bind to the porous surface of the charcoal and are trapped within the dressing rather than escaping into the air. This is a chemical process, not simply a barrier or a fragrance mask, which is why activated charcoal dressings are significantly more effective than standard dressings with a deodorizing spray applied on top. The charcoal layer must remain intact and dry to function — once it becomes saturated the odor-control capacity is exhausted and the dressing needs changing.
What is the difference between CarboFlex and Actisorb Silver 220?
ConvaTec CarboFlex is a five-layer activated charcoal dressing designed primarily for odor management in malodorous wounds — it absorbs exudate and neutralizes odor without an antimicrobial component, making it suitable for colonized or chronic wounds where odor is the primary management concern. Actisorb Silver 220 combines activated charcoal with silver to provide simultaneous odor control and antimicrobial action — the silver binds and kills bacteria within the dressing while the charcoal traps odor-causing compounds. Actisorb is the better choice when both infection control and odor management are needed in the same dressing.
What types of wounds produce the most odor?
The wounds most likely to produce significant malodor are fungating or malignant wounds, heavily infected wounds with high bacterial load, wounds with significant necrotic tissue or slough, diabetic foot ulcers with deep colonization, and venous ulcers with chronic critical colonization. Wound odor is produced by anaerobic bacteria metabolizing proteins in the wound — the more necrotic tissue and bacterial burden present, the more pronounced the odor. Addressing the underlying cause through debridement and infection management is the primary goal; odor-absorbent dressings provide essential quality-of-life support while that process is underway.
Do odor-absorbent dressings treat wound infection?
Standard activated charcoal dressings such as CarboFlex manage odor but do not treat infection — they are a quality-of-life intervention, not an antimicrobial one. Actisorb Silver 220 is the exception, combining charcoal with silver to deliver both odor control and localized antimicrobial action. For wounds with confirmed or suspected infection, odor management should always be paired with appropriate antimicrobial dressing therapy and clinician-guided systemic treatment where indicated. Odor alone is not always a sign of clinical infection — but new or worsening odor combined with increasing exudate and periwound changes warrants a full wound reassessment.
Can odor-absorbent dressings be cut to size?
Most activated charcoal dressings should not be cut — cutting exposes the charcoal layer and disrupts the sealed structure that keeps the charcoal contained and functioning. CarboFlex in particular is available in multiple sizes precisely because cutting is not recommended. Always select the size closest to the wound dimensions, overlapping onto intact periwound skin by at least one centimeter on each side. If a product’s labeling specifically states it may be trimmed, follow those instructions carefully and seal any cut edges per manufacturer guidance.
