ConvaTec DuoDerm CGF Sterile Dressing 4" x 4" — Proprietary Control Gel Formula, Self-Adherent, No Border
ConvaTec's proprietary CGF formula. Self-adherent. No border, no tape required for most applications. Bacterial and viral barrier. ConvaTec DuoDerm CGF Sterile Dressing (187660) is a 4" x 4" sterile, self-adherent hydrocolloid wound dressing built on ConvaTec's proprietary Control Gel Formula (CGF) — a unique combination of pectins, gelatins, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and elastomers that is clinically distinct from standard single-polymer hydrocolloid dressings. When in contact with wound exudate, the CGF matrix converts to a soft, cohesive gel mass that creates and maintains an optimal moist wound healing environment, supports autolytic debridement of sloughy and necrotic tissue, and allows for low-trauma dressing removal with minimal disruption to healing tissue. This is the non-bordered Sterile version — the dressing pad itself is self-adherent and adheres directly to the surrounding periwound skin without a foam border, making it the preferred choice for patients with adhesive sensitivities, wounds under compression bandaging, and clinical settings where custom fixation is needed. Box of 5.

Indicated For — Wound Types
- Pressure ulcers / pressure injuries — Stage II through Stage IV
- Dermal ulcers — venous leg ulcers, arterial ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers
- Full-thickness wounds
- Superficial wounds and abrasions
- Partial thickness (second-degree) burns
- Donor sites
- Light-to-moderately exuding wounds requiring a moist healing environment
- Wounds requiring autolytic debridement support
Contraindications: Not indicated for heavily exudating wounds — for high-drainage wounds, a foam or alginate dressing is more appropriate. Not for use on infected wounds without concurrent clinical management. Not for third-degree burns or surgical implantation.
CGF Sterile vs. CGF Border — Choosing the Right DuoDerm CGF
DuoDerm CGF is available in two configurations — this non-bordered Sterile Dressing (187660) and the CGF Border with its wide polyurethane foam adhesive perimeter. Both share the identical CGF hydrocolloid formula and deliver the same wound healing environment. The clinical distinction is fixation method and who it's best suited for:
- DuoDerm CGF Sterile — 187660 (this product): The self-adherent pad without a border. The hydrocolloid material itself adheres directly to the periwound skin. Requires tape or a secondary fixation dressing for wounds on high-movement or contoured surfaces where the pad alone may lift. Best for patients with sensitivity to adhesive borders, fragile periwound skin, wounds being treated under compression bandaging where a foam border would interfere, and clinical settings where the clinician wants to control fixation method independently. Also preferred when the wound is smaller than 4x4 and the dressing will be trimmed to fit — trimming a bordered dressing compromises the border integrity, while the non-bordered Sterile can be cut to any shape without losing function.
- DuoDerm CGF Border (187971): The same hydrocolloid pad surrounded by a wide, flexible polyurethane foam adhesive border that secures the dressing without tape. Best for hard-to-dress locations, home care patients, and any setting where one-step tape-free application and maximum edge security are priorities. Available in triangle shapes for sacral and heel wounds.
Application Instructions
- Cleanse the wound per standard protocol — irrigate with saline if indicated and debride as needed
- Dry the surrounding periwound skin thoroughly — the hydrocolloid adhesive requires dry skin contact for secure fixation
- Select a dressing that extends at least 1¼" beyond the wound margin on all sides — the 4x4 is appropriate for wounds up to approximately 1½" x 1½"
- Remove the release paper from the dressing
- Apply the dressing directly over the wound, centering the pad over the wound bed and pressing the edges down firmly against the surrounding skin
- Mold the dressing into place with the warmth of the hand — the body heat softens the hydrocolloid slightly, improving adhesion and conformability to the wound surface
- For high-movement locations or where the pad edges require additional security, apply tape to the dressing perimeter or cover with a secondary dressing
Removal: Gently press down on the surrounding skin while lifting the dressing edge — the cohesive CGF gel allows the dressing to lift away with minimal residue and minimal disruption to the wound surface. If the dressing is firm or adherent, warm the surface briefly with a warm damp cloth before removal to soften the hydrocolloid and ease release.
Change frequency: Up to 7 days maximum — change earlier if the dressing is saturated (visible as a fluid-filled blister under the dressing), if leakage occurs, or if clinical inspection is required.
