Clinical FAQs
What is the difference between this pouch and SKU 18393 with the AF300 filter?
SKU 18352/18353/18354 (this product) has no integrated filter — it relies on odor-barrier pouch film to contain odors within the pouch. SKU 18393 has an integrated AF300 charcoal filter that passively releases and deodorizes gas through the pouch wall, also preventing ballooning. The non-filter version (this product) is appropriate when gas management is not a significant concern — for example, colostomy patients with predictable formed output and minimal gas. For patients who experience significant gas between pouch changes, the AF300 filter version is the more comfortable choice. The filter version (18393) is currently available in the 2-1/4" (57mm/Red) flange size in a 60-pack; these three SKUs cover all three flange sizes in a 30-pack.
What does "two-sided" ComfortWear mean and why does it matter?
Two-sided ComfortWear means the soft, fabric-like panel covers both the body-facing side of the pouch (the side against the skin) and the outer-facing side (the side against clothing). The body-side panel reduces friction and irritation against the abdomen during daily wear. The outer-side panel provides an additional benefit: the soft material is silent — it does not produce the rustling sound associated with plain plastic film pouches when clothing moves against it. Together, the two-sided design makes this one of the most discreet closed-end pouches available in the New Image system.
What is the New Image floating flange and how does the pouch attach?
The Hollister New Image system uses a floating flange — the coupling ring is not rigidly flat against the skin barrier but has slight flex and lift built in. This allows the user to slide fingers underneath the flange during pouch attachment, reducing the pressure applied directly to the abdomen when pressing the pouch into place. To attach, align the pouch flange over the barrier flange and press around the circumference until a series of audible clicks confirms full engagement. Work around the entire ring until no more clicks are heard and no gaps remain.
What types of stomas is this pouch appropriate for?
This mini closed-end pouch is designed for colostomy patients with predictable, less frequent, or formed output — typically patients who have established a regular bowel pattern post-surgery and change the pouch once or twice daily. It is not the appropriate choice for ileostomy patients, who produce liquid, continuous output requiring a drainable pouch. For patients with unpredictable output timing or higher output frequency, a drainable New Image pouch is more practical than a closed-end design.
How do I match the flange size to my skin barrier?
Hollister New Image barriers and pouches use a color-coded system by flange size: Green = 44mm (1-3/4"), Red = 57mm (2-1/4"), Blue = 70mm (2-3/4"). Match the color code on your pouch box to the color code on your skin barrier box. The flange size selection is independent of the stoma opening size you cut — flange size determines which barrier and pouch are compatible with each other, while the barrier opening is trimmed to fit the stoma separately.
Can this pouch be used with a CenterPointLock barrier instead of a New Image barrier?
No. The New Image pouch is designed specifically for New Image two-piece skin barriers, which use the floating flange coupling system. Hollister's CenterPointLock barriers use a different coupling mechanism and are not interchangeable with New Image pouches. Always confirm your barrier system before ordering pouches — mixing components from different systems will result in improper attachment and leakage risk.
How do I know how many pouches I'll need per month?
Closed-end pouches are changed when full — most colostomy patients change once or twice daily. At one change per day, 30 pouches covers approximately one month. At two changes per day, 30 pouches covers approximately two weeks — two boxes per month would be typical. FSA accounts can be used to purchase multiple boxes.
