Key Features
- SoftFlex skin barrier — ultra-thin, dimpled hydrocolloid barrier with air pocket technology for exceptional flexibility
- Air pocket barrier technology — indentations (dimples) prevent full-surface skin contact, reducing adhesion trauma during removal
- Designed for frequent pouch removal — barrier maintains gentleness across multiple daily applications and removals
- Appropriate for fragile peristomal skin — particularly elderly patients or those with sensitive, reactive skin
- Pre-cut openings — no cutting required; select the closest size to your stoma
- AF300 integrated filter — slow-release charcoal deodorization; prevents gas buildup and pouch ballooning
- Two-sided beige ComfortWear panels — soft, cloth-like coverage on both body-facing and outer sides; rustle-free
- Odor-barrier pouch film
- No tape border — for patients sensitive to tape adhesive or with tape-reactive peristomal skin
- One-piece system — SoftFlex barrier and pouch permanently integrated
- Flat barrier — for normally protruding stomas
- 7" (18cm) mini pouch length
- Suitable for colostomy and stomas with predictable lower-frequency output

Clinical FAQs
What is SoftFlex and how is it different from a standard hydrocolloid barrier?
SoftFlex is Hollister's air pocket barrier technology — a hydrocolloid barrier with numerous small indentations (dimples) pressed into the adhesive surface. At each dimple, the barrier material does not contact the skin, creating small air pockets across the adhesion surface. These air pockets serve two clinical purposes: they provide enhanced flexibility (the barrier can flex and conform more easily without cracking or lifting at the edges), and they reduce the total skin contact area, which makes removal gentler and less traumatic to the peristomal skin. Standard flat hydrocolloid barriers have continuous full-surface adhesion — when removed, they pull uniformly across the entire contact area. SoftFlex's air pockets mean less adhesive surface to release on each removal.
Who is the SoftFlex barrier specifically indicated for?
Hollister specifically recommends SoftFlex for two patient groups: patients who remove their pouch frequently (such as those using closed-end pouches changed once or twice daily), and patients with fragile or reactive peristomal skin — particularly elderly ostomates, patients on long-term corticosteroids, patients with thin or parchment-like skin from radiation, or patients who have developed peristomal skin damage from repeated adhesive removal. For patients using drainable pouches changed every 3–5 days, the SoftFlex advantage is less clinically significant; a standard or Flextend barrier typically provides better extended wear performance.
What does the AF300 filter do and is it appropriate for all colostomy patients?
The AF300 charcoal filter passively vents gas from the pouch through a slow-release process, neutralizing odor before gas exits and preventing the pouch from inflating with trapped gas (ballooning). It is appropriate for most colostomy patients. The filter may be less effective for patients who produce very high volumes of gas rapidly — in those cases, the filter can saturate and reduce venting speed. Do not wet the filter intentionally; brief shower or swim exposure is acceptable. A waterproof filter cover sticker is available separately for water activities if needed.
Why does this pouch not have a tape border?
A tape border is the adhesive porous tape that extends beyond the edges of the hydrocolloid barrier, providing additional adhesion to the surrounding peristomal skin. This pouch deliberately omits the tape border. For patients with sensitive, tape-reactive, or fragile skin around the stoma, a tape border can cause contact dermatitis, skin stripping, or irritation — particularly with frequent daily changes. The no-tape-border design limits adhesion to the hydrocolloid barrier only, reducing total adhesive contact on the most vulnerable skin surrounding the stoma. If additional security is needed without tape, an ostomy support belt (using the available belt tabs) is the appropriate alternative.
How do I choose the correct pre-cut size?
Measure the stoma at its widest point using the measuring guide included in the box. Stoma size fluctuates — measure before every change during the post-operative period and periodically after. Select the pre-cut opening that is equal to or slightly larger than the widest measured stoma diameter — the goal is to fit snugly around the stoma without pressing into the stoma tissue. The three sizes available (1"/25mm, 1-3/16"/30mm, 1-3/8"/35mm) cover smaller to average stoma sizes. If your stoma is larger than 1-3/8" or irregular in shape, a cut-to-fit version of the Premier system may be more appropriate.
Is this pouch appropriate for ileostomy patients?
No. SoftFlex is described as "mildly resistant to breakdown" and best used for low water content discharge — the definition of colostomy output. Ileostomy effluent is liquid and enzymatically aggressive; it would erode the SoftFlex barrier quickly, resulting in short wear times, peristomal skin exposure, and potential leakage. Ileostomy patients require a barrier formulated for liquid output resistance, such as Hollister's Flextend barrier. This pouch is appropriate for colostomy patients with formed or semi-formed output.
What is the difference between this and the standard Hollister Premier closed mini pouch?
The key difference is the barrier material. The standard Premier closed mini pouch uses Hollister's standard or Flextend hydrocolloid barrier — designed for longer wear periods (5–7 days) and higher resistance to output erosion. This SoftFlex version uses the air pocket barrier — designed for gentleness and flexibility across frequent removals, but with less erosion resistance. Choose the SoftFlex version for patients who change frequently (1–2 times daily) and have skin sensitivity concerns. Choose the standard barrier for patients who want longer wear between changes and whose skin tolerates normal adhesive application and removal.
