Mölnlycke Mepilex Border Flex — 360° Flex Technology, Five-Layer, Safetac, 4 Standard Sizes
360° Flex Technology. Patented Y-cuts in the spreading and retention layers. Stays in place at high-motion wound sites where standard bordered foam dressings lift and fail. Up to 77% more conformable than Mepilex Border Lite. Handles viscous exudate. Traps bacteria — shown to outperform comparable bordered dressings by up to 108% in fluid handling tests. Mölnlycke Mepilex Border Flex is a five-layer self-adherent silicone foam dressing built on Mölnlycke's proprietary Flex Technology — a patent-pending structural innovation that uses Y-cuts through the spreading and retention layers to enable true multi-directional 360° stretch. The result is a bordered foam dressing that moves with the body rather than against it: conforming to knees, elbows, heels, ankles, and any high-movement anatomical site without the tensioning, skin stress, and edge lift that causes standard bordered foams to detach prematurely. The five-layer construction absorbs, channels, and locks exudate — including viscous drainage — in a bacteria-trapping structure that prevents re-entry to the wound bed under compression or pressure. Safetac soft silicone adhesion means the dressing adheres to periwound skin without bonding to the wound surface, and lifts for wound inspection and repositions without loss of adhesion. Waterproof — shower-ready throughout the wear period. Stippled backing film allows visual monitoring of exudate color and spread without dressing removal. Available in four standard sizes. Box of 5.

|---|---|
| Dressing Type | Five-layer self-adherent bordered silicone foam — Flex Technology |
| Layer 1 — Wound Contact | Safetac soft silicone — adheres to periwound skin, not wound bed; seals wound edges; lift and reposition without loss of adhesion or skin trauma |
| Layer 2 — Spreading Layer | With Y-cut Flex Technology — distributes exudate laterally for channel absorption; provides 360° multi-directional stretch |
| Layer 3 — Absorbent Core | Polyurethane foam — primary fluid absorption; handles both thin and viscous exudate |
| Layer 4 — Retention Layer | With Y-cut Flex Technology — locks absorbed exudate away from wound surface; prevents re-entry under compression; bacteria-trapping function |
| Layer 5 — Outer Backing | Stippled waterproof polyurethane film — bacterial barrier; shower-proof; stippled pattern enables visual monitoring of exudate color and spread |
| Flex Technology | Patented Y-cuts in spreading and retention layers — enables 360° stretch; distributes load force evenly; up to 77% more conformable than Mepilex Border Lite |

Indicated For — Wound Types & Uses
- Diabetic foot ulcers — including wounds on mobile foot and ankle surfaces
- Venous leg ulcers — use under compression bandaging
- Arterial ulcers
- Pressure injuries / pressure ulcers — treatment and prophylactic prevention
- Skin tears — atraumatic Safetac adhesion ideal for fragile skin
- Traumatic wounds — lacerations, abrasions
- Surgical wounds and post-operative incisions — reduces post-operative blistering
- Burns — partial thickness
- Dry or necrotic wounds — in combination with gels to rehydrate wound bed
- High-movement anatomical sites — knees, elbows, heels, ankles, shoulders where standard foam dressings detach prematurely
- Prophylactic pressure injury prevention — as part of a prevention protocol in emergency departments, ICUs, operating rooms, and at other high-risk care points
Contraindications: Do not use on patients with known hypersensitivity to dressing components. Do not use with oxidizing agents (hypochlorite solutions, hydrogen peroxide). Not for third-degree burns.
Flex Technology — What the Y-Cut Does and Why It Matters
Standard bordered foam dressings are built as flat, dimensionally stable pads — they absorb fluid and provide a cushioning barrier, but their structure resists deformation. When applied over a wound site that experiences body movement — a knee that flexes, an elbow that bends, a heel that moves through the gait cycle, an ankle that dorsiflexes — the dressing resists that movement. The mechanical tension created at the dressing perimeter as the body moves is transferred directly to the adhesive border edge, causing the edge to peel away from the skin in the direction of greatest movement. This is the fundamental failure mode of standard bordered foam at high-motion sites, and it happens regardless of adhesive strength — the tension overcomes even the most aggressive adhesives.
Mepilex Border Flex solves this at the structural level rather than the adhesive level. Mölnlycke's patented Flex Technology introduces Y-shaped cuts through two internal layers of the dressing — the spreading layer and the retention layer. These Y-cuts divide the internal structure into segments that can move independently of each other. When the body moves and the dressing surface is deformed, the Y-cut segments allow the dressing to stretch and conform in every direction — essentially mimicking the movement of the skin beneath it rather than resisting it. The load force from body movement is distributed evenly across the dressing surface instead of concentrating at the border edge. The border stays down because it is no longer being pulled up by internal dressing tension.
The clinical result is a dressing that has been measured to be up to 77% more conformable than Mepilex Border Lite
