Description

Smith & Nephew Durafiber Gelling Fiber Wound Dressing — Cellulose Ethyl Sulphonate, 4 Sizes

A new generation of gelling fiber — built to outperform conventional dressings. Smith & Nephew Durafiber is a soft, sterile, non-woven gelling fiber dressing composed of cellulose ethyl sulphonate fibers that rapidly transforms into a clear, cool gel on contact with wound fluid — locking in exudate, conforming intimately to the wound bed, and maintaining the moist environment needed for healing. Unlike conventional gelling dressings, Durafiber is engineered with anti-shrinkage properties and high wet strength so it holds its structure throughout the full wear period and removes intact — no fiber residue, no wound bed disruption.

✔ Cellulose Ethyl Sulphonate Gelling Fiber    ✔ Anti-Shrinkage — High Wet Strength    ✔ Locks Exudate Away from Wound    ✔ Up to 7-Day Wear Time

How Durafiber Works — and Why It's Different From Conventional Gelling Fiber

Standard gelling fiber dressings — including hydrofibers and alginates — can shrink, fragment, and leave fiber residue in the wound bed on removal. Durafiber's unique cellulose ethyl sulphonate fiber blend is engineered specifically to address those limitations. The fiber matrix swells and gels on contact with exudate rather than breaking down — maintaining structural integrity throughout the wear period so the dressing can be removed in one piece. The gel it forms is clear and cool, conforming intimately to the wound surface and locking fluid away from the wound bed rather than allowing it to pool. Anti-shrinkage properties keep the dressing flat and in full contact with the wound throughout wear — no gaps, no edges lifting, no missed coverage.

  • Rapidly forms a clear, cool, conformable gel on contact with wound fluid
  • Absorbs and locks exudate away from the wound bed — reduces maceration risk
  • Anti-shrinkage properties — fiber matrix stays flat and in full wound contact throughout wear
  • High wet strength — maintains structural integrity when saturated, removes intact
  • Low fiber shed and minimal dressing residue — clean removal, no wound bed disruption
  • Conforms intimately to wound bed contours — including irregular and cavity wounds
  • Provides moist wound environment to support autolytic debridement throughout wear
  • Soft and gentle on periwound skin — cooling gel sensation on application
  • Up to 7-day wear time — fewer dressing changes, less wound disruption
  • Prevents bacterial spread by locking fluid in the gel matrix
  • Gamma irradiated — sterile throughout the product lifecycle

Choosing the Right Size & Format

  • 2" x 2" (66800559) — Small wounds, post-surgical sites, diabetic foot wounds, and pressure ulcers on heels or other compact areas
  • 4" x 4" (66800560) — Most versatile size for standard pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, donor sites, and general moderate-to-heavy exudate management
  • 6" x 6" (66800561) — Large wounds, extensive pressure ulcers, large venous ulcers, and burns requiring broader coverage
  • 3/4" x 18" Ribbon (66800551) — Tunneling wounds, cavity wounds, fistulae, and deep wound tracks requiring packing

Durafiber vs. Durafiber Ag — What's the Difference?

Smith & Nephew offers Durafiber in two versions using the same cellulose ethyl sulphonate fiber technology.

  • Durafiber (this product) — Non-antimicrobial. For infected and non-infected wounds where antimicrobial silver is not indicated. All the gelling fiber benefits without ionic silver
  • Durafiber Ag — Adds ionic silver for broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. For wounds with confirmed or suspected infection, high bacterial bioburden, or elevated infection risk. Do not use on patients with known silver sensitivity
