Description

The S.R. Smith PAL2 (202-0000) is the industry-standard portable pool lift — a 300 lb ADA compliant, free-standing lift that requires no deck anchor installation, no sand ballast, and no construction of any kind. Stability is provided by a patented internal counterweight system built into the base: over 700 lbs of counterweight that supports the 300 lb lifting capacity without any connection to the deck. The included PAL Secure-It Kit allows the PAL2 to be quickly secured to the pool deck per the ADA's fixed pool lift requirement — no bonding, no new construction, no core drilling — and just as quickly removed when portability is needed. The LiftOperator Intelligent Control System with LINAK medical-grade actuator provides precise, reliable lift operation. 240-degree rotation. User-operated waterproof hand control. Integrated armrests (California compliant). Footrest and seatbelt assembly included. Powder-coated stainless steel and aluminum, 4,000-hour salt fog tested. ADA compliant (ADAAG 2010), independently third-party verified. Deck Profile Data Sheet required at time of order. Ships LTL freight. 3-year frame + 2-year electronics + 1-year pro-rated battery warranty. By S.R. Smith. Item 202-0000.

The Patented Counterweight System — How Portable ADA Compliance Works

Every ADA-compliant pool lift must be "fixed" — the 2010 ADA Standards specify that pool lifts cannot simply be placed on a pool deck and used; they must be secured to prevent movement during operation. For anchored lifts, that means core drilling and permanent hardware. The PAL2 solves this two ways simultaneously:

The counterweight base — no anchor needed for stability: The PAL2's base contains over 700 lbs of internal counterweight. This mass provides the stability the lift needs to safely support a 300 lb user without any connection to the deck. No core drilling. No bolt-down. No construction. The weight is already inside the lift. This is S.R. Smith's patented counterbalance system and is the fundamental reason the PAL2 can be free-standing while remaining structurally capable of safe lifting.

The Secure-It Kit — ADA "fixed" compliance without construction: The ADA's fixed lift requirement is satisfied by the included PAL Secure-It Kit. This hardware package quickly secures the lift body to the pool deck surface using a method that requires no bonding, no new construction, and no permanent modification to the deck. Install it when the lift is in use; remove it when the lift is being stored or moved. The Secure-It Kit is what allows the PAL2 to be both genuinely portable and fully ADA compliant — not a compromise between the two, but both at once.

Truly Portable — What That Means Operationally

Most lifts described as "portable" still require a semi-permanent anchor in the deck — the lift body removes from the anchor, but the anchor stays. The PAL2 has no anchor at all. The entire unit — base, mast, seat, and counterweight — moves as one piece on its own base. Operationally this allows:

  • Multiple pool locations from one lift — a single PAL2 can be used at different positions around the pool on different days, or moved between the pool and spa without a second installation; the Secure-It Kit is repositioned each time
  • Pool deck clearance for events — the entire lift can be removed from the pool area when the deck is used for events, then returned when pool sessions resume; no residual anchor hardware on the deck
  • Multi-facility deployment — hotels, aquatic centers, and therapy facilities with multiple pools or locations can share a PAL2 between pools rather than purchasing a separate lift for each
  • Seasonal or temporary installations — facilities that need pool access for a limited time or season can deploy and remove the PAL2 without permanent deck modification
  • One-person movement — the PAL2 is designed to be moved by a single person despite its counterweight mass; it can be repositioned as needed without staff coordination
Note on shipping weight: The PAL2's internal counterweight means it ships at approximately 1,100 lbs — significantly heavier than anchor-based lifts. Delivery is via LTL freight with liftgate service. Ensure adequate access and space for freight delivery. The counterweight that makes the PAL2 portable is also what makes it heavy to ship.

LiftOperator Intelligent Control + LINAK Actuator

The PAL2 uses the same LiftOperator Intelligent Controller and LINAK medical-grade screw/spline actuator found across the Splash! series — mounted on the mast for convenient access during operation. Key characteristics:

  • Safe stop at any position — the LINAK actuator holds the seat in place at any point in the vertical travel range; releasing the handset or a power interruption stops and holds the seat rather than allowing a drop
  • User-operable waterproof handset — the user controls the full lift cycle independently from the seat; no staff assistance required for ADA-compliant independent operation
  • Mast-mounted controller — the LiftOperator is mounted on the lift mast rather than at the base, keeping the control electronics accessible and protected from poolside moisture exposure at ground level

Construction — 4,000-Hour Salt Fog Tested

S.R. Smith's PAL2 uses a 5-step powder coat process validated by 4,000-hour Salt Fog Testing (ASTM D1654) achieving a rating of 10 — the highest possible score. For a lift sitting adjacent to a pool 365 days a year, this level of corrosion resistance is not cosmetic — it determines how the finish holds up to years of chlorinated splash, humidity, and UV exposure. The matte finish is S.R. Smith's updated aesthetic on the PAL2 design, replacing the glossy finish of the original PAL.

Who the PAL2 Is For

  • Facilities that cannot or prefer not to core drill — leased facilities, historic properties, facilities where permanent deck modification is not permitted or practical
  • Multi-pool facilities — a single PAL2 can serve multiple pool locations; facilities with therapy pools, lap pools, and recreational pools can move the unit between them
  • Hotels and resorts — temporary or flexible pool access deployment without permanent deck modification; lift can be removed when not needed for pool deck events
  • Aquatic therapy centers — the LiftOperator's precise stop positioning supports safe, repeatable patient transfers in therapeutic settings
  • California facilities — integrated armrests meet California's stricter pool lift requirements out of the box
  • Facilities evaluating permanent installation — the PAL2 can be deployed immediately while a facility evaluates permanent lift options, without committing to an anchor location

FAQs

Does the PAL2 truly require no drilling or construction?

Correct — no core drilling, no concrete anchors, no bonding, and no new construction of any kind. The internal counterweight provides stability; the Secure-It Kit (included) provides the ADA-required deck fixing without permanent modification. The Secure-It Kit hardware attaches to the deck surface; when removed, no lasting modification to the deck remains.

How does the ADA "fixed" requirement work with a portable lift?

US Federal ADA requirements specify that pool lifts must be fixed to the deck during use — they cannot simply be placed and operated. The PAL2 satisfies this requirement through the Secure-It Kit, which secures the lift to the deck per ADA specifications without permanent construction. When not in use, the Secure-It Kit is removed and the lift can be repositioned or stored. ADA compliance is satisfied during use; portability is retained when not in use.

Can one person move it?

Yes — the PAL2 is designed to be moved by one person despite the heavy counterweight base. S.R. Smith confirms single-person repositioning in their specifications. The base is weighted, not anchored, so movement is a matter of rolling/sliding the unit rather than lifting it.

How does it compare to anchor-based portable lifts?

Anchor-based "portable" lifts (like the Aqua Creek Mighty Voyager) require an anchor or ballast system at each use location — the Voyager uses sand that the customer fills and manages. The PAL2's counterweight is internal and permanent — no setup material needed at each location. Redeployment is faster and requires no material management, at the cost of higher shipping weight and a slightly lower 300 lb capacity vs. the Voyager's 325 lb.

Is it ADA compliant for our commercial pool?

Yes — the PAL2 is ADA compliant (ADAAG 2010) and independently third-party verified. With the Secure-It Kit installed during use, it satisfies the ADA fixed pool lift requirement without permanent deck modification. For California facilities, the integrated armrests also meet California's additional requirements. Call us for commercial deployment guidance: 866-218-0902.
