About Intermittent Self-Catheters

Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is the periodic insertion and removal of a catheter to drain the bladder — performed by the patient or caregiver several times per day. CIC is the standard management for neurogenic bladder, urinary retention, and other conditions where the bladder cannot empty on its own. Straight tip catheters have a rounded blunt end for standard urethral anatomy. Coudé tip catheters have a curved or angled tip to navigate past an enlarged prostate or urethral obstruction in male patients. Hydrophilic catheters are pre-coated with a slippery polymer surface that becomes lubricated on contact with water, reducing urethral friction and trauma with each catheterization. Closed-system catheters include an integrated collection bag and sterile technique features — used by patients requiring strict sterile technique due to elevated UTI risk. French size (Fr) refers to outer diameter: 1 Fr = 0.33mm. Most adults use 14Fr or 16Fr; pediatric and female patients may use smaller sizes. A prescription from your physician or nurse practitioner is required.
