How to Choose the Right Lift Chair Without Coming Into a Store 2026

Lift Chairs · Buying Guide · Pride Mobility · Golden Technologies · 42 Years
We have been selling lift chairs for 42 years. We have seen every condition, every room configuration, and every situation that makes this purchase complicated. What follows is everything our trained seating specialists say on the phone — the questions we ask, the answers that determine the chair, and the specific models we recommend for each situation. You do not need to come into a store. You need the right answers.

Every week we speak with customers who cannot make it to a showroom — they are recovering from surgery, managing a condition that makes travel difficult, or simply purchasing for a parent or spouse who lives across the country. They need the same honest guidance our in-store customers get. This is that guidance.

There are five questions that determine the right lift chair. Answer them accurately — about yourself or the person the chair is for — and the right model becomes obvious. We will walk through all five.

Prefer to talk through it? Every one of our six Southwest Florida showrooms has trained seating specialists on the floor Monday through Saturday. If you would rather answer these questions with a person than work through them on a page, call us: 866-218-0902. The average phone consultation takes 15 minutes. We do not use commissioned sales staff — you will get a straight answer.

What Is the User's Height and Weight?

How do I know what size lift chair I need?
Lift chair sizing is primarily determined by height, not weight. Seat height, seat depth, and back height are calibrated to the user's body dimensions. As a rule: users under 5'3" need a Small or Petite model. Users 5'3"–5'9" typically fit a Medium. Users 5'9"–6'2" need a Large. Taller than 6'2" requires a Large-Tall or a custom configuration. Weight capacity is a separate question — standard chairs are typically rated 325–400 lbs; bariatric models extend to 600 lbs. Choose a chair rated at least 25–30 lbs above the user's actual weight.

Height is the primary sizing variable because it determines three critical dimensions: whether the user's feet rest flat on the floor when seated, whether the seat depth supports the full thigh without pressing behind the knee, and whether the backrest height supports the full spine. A chair that gets any of these wrong will be uncomfortable from the first day and may not provide safe lift assistance.

The Floor Test — Do This Before Ordering

Sit in your current chair. Are your feet flat on the floor with knees near 90 degrees? Is the seat pressing into the back of your thighs? Is the backrest reaching your shoulder blades? These are the three indicators that your current seating height is correct — or not. A lift chair should replicate that correct position, not inherit the problems of a poorly-sized existing chair.

📐 Measure Yourself at Home — Before You Call or Order

Your Height Bare feet, standing against a wall. This is the primary sizing input for every chair model.
Seat Height Measure from the floor to the back of your knee while seated in a comfortable chair. This is your ideal seat-to-floor height.
Seat Depth Measure from the back of your seated buttocks to the back of your knee. Leave 2 finger-widths of clearance at the front — this is your maximum seat depth.
Hip Width Measure across your hips at the widest point while seated. Add 2" — this is your minimum seat width. Bariatric models start at 26"+ seat width.
Your Weight Current weight. Choose a chair rated at least 25–30 lbs above this — not at it. Running a motor at its rated maximum every day degrades it faster than manufacturers' estimates assume.

Call us with these numbers and we can confirm the exact size — and in some cases rule out models that look right on paper but won't fit: 866-218-0902.

What Is the Chair Primarily For?

What lift chair is best for my specific health condition?
The right lift chair depends on what you are treating. For hip or knee recovery: infinite position for precise angle control — the Pride Tranquil PLR-935 in the correct size. For edema or heart failure: true Trendelenburg (feet above heart) — the Golden Cloud PR-527 with Twilight. For arthritis with heat needs: 3-zone heat — the Pride Radiance PLR-3955. For sleeping in the chair: the Journey Perfect Sleep Chair — the only model designed for full-night sleep. For back pain: zero gravity — the Golden Cloud PR-527 or Golden Relaxer PR-766. For bariatric users: the Golden Cloud PR-510 Extra Wide at up to 600 lbs.

Match Your Condition to the Right Feature

Condition / Primary Need Must-Have Feature Recommended Model
Post hip or knee replacement Infinite position — precise angle control throughout recovery Pride Tranquil PLR-935 (4 sizes, no heat — right price for recovery)
Edema / leg swelling True Trendelenburg — feet above heart, not just elevated above seat Golden Cloud PR-527 Twilight · Pride Ultra PLR-4955
Congestive heart failure (CHF) Trendelenburg for fluid management. Battery backup non-negotiable. Golden Cloud PR-527 Twilight
Arthritis (hands, hips, back) 3-zone heat. Easy-press rocker control — no fine-motor grip required. Pride Radiance PLR-3955 (3-zone heat: shoulders, lumbar, seat)
Chronic back pain / lumbar Zero gravity decompresses the spine. Power lumbar adjusts the curve. Golden Relaxer PR-766 · Golden EZ Sleeper Slim PR-764
Sleeping in the chair (GERD, apnea, surgical) Full 180° lay-flat. Heat and massage standard — not optional. Night after night. Journey Perfect Sleep Chair — only model designed for nightly sleep
COPD / respiratory Infinite recline to find the breathing angle. Not too reclined, not upright. Pride Radiance PLR-3955 · Golden Cloud PR-527 Twilight
Parkinson's / neurological One-touch memory positions — fewer button operations per session. Stable lift. Golden Dione PR-446 (AutoDrive memory positions) · Pride Tranquil PLR-935
Bariatric (over 325 lbs) Correct weight rating with margin. Seat width that actually fits. Zero gravity at capacity. Golden Cloud PR-510 Extra Wide — up to 600 lbs
General lift assistance — no specific condition Reliable, simple. 3-position is fine. Battery backup. Easy controls. Pride Genesis LC-150 — straightforward and right-priced
42 years of one consistent finding: The biggest mistake buyers make is choosing features they won't use and missing the one they actually need. A customer with edema who buys a 3-position chair because it was less expensive will still have swollen legs at the end of the day. A customer with no therapeutic positioning need who buys a premium Twilight chair paid for features that won't change their outcome. Tell us what you are treating — we will tell you what you need and what you can skip.

3-Position or Infinite Position?

What is the difference between a 3-position and infinite position lift chair?
A 3-position lift chair moves to three fixed positions: upright, TV-watching angle, and near-flat. The back and footrest move together on one motor. An infinite-position lift chair has independent motors for the back and footrest — each can be set to any angle individually. This allows zero-gravity positioning (where the footrest rises above heart level) and Trendelenburg (where feet rise above the head). Infinite position is required for therapeutic use — edema, CHF, post-surgical positioning, and back pain. 3-position is appropriate when the primary need is lift assistance and comfortable reclining without therapeutic angle requirements.

This is the decision that most buyers get wrong — choosing infinite position because it sounds better, or choosing 3-position because it costs less, without understanding which one their situation actually requires.

Choose 3-Position If:

  • The primary need is getting safely in and out of the chair — not therapeutic positioning
  • The user's physician has not prescribed a specific reclining position
  • There are no edema, circulation, or heart failure concerns
  • The user wants comfortable TV watching and napping — not zero gravity
  • Simplicity of controls matters — fewer buttons, less to manage

Choose Infinite Position If:

  • Legs need to be elevated above heart level — edema, CHF, or chronic circulation issues
  • A physician or PT has prescribed zero-gravity or Trendelenburg positioning
  • Post-surgical positioning restrictions require precise angle control
  • Back pain requires spinal decompression in a reclined position
  • The user will spend 4+ hours per day in the chair and needs to shift positions
  • A power headrest or power lumbar is needed — only available on infinite-position models
The Twilight and VivaLift Tilt question: Premium Golden models feature Twilight Technology — a 5th independent zone that tilts the entire chair from the rear pivot, achieving deeper zero-gravity than standard infinite position. Pride's equivalent is VivaLift Tilt on the Ultra PLR-4955. These are worth the premium for edema, CHF, and significant back conditions. They are not necessary for standard post-surgical recovery or general comfort use.

Do You Need Heat and Massage?

Is heat and massage worth it on a lift chair?
For users with arthritis, chronic muscle tension, or who spend 4+ hours per day in the chair — yes, heat is worth it. For users who need the lift function primarily and rarely sit for extended periods — no, it is not. The most important thing to know about heat on lift chairs: most heated models only heat the lumbar area. The Pride VivaLift Radiance PLR-3955 heats three separate zones (shoulders, lumbar, and seat), which is meaningfully different for full-body arthritis or tension. Air-bladder massage (Golden's Nirvana system) creates actual compression and decompression — more therapeutic than vibration. Vibration massage is the entry-level option; air massage is the clinical upgrade.

Heat — What to Know

Heat on a lift chair is not like heat on a heating pad. Lift chair heat is typically far-infrared (Golden's HeatWave) or conventional coil heat. Far-infrared penetrates deeper. Either way: heat matters if the user has arthritis that responds to warmth, chronic muscle tension, or needs joint warming before standing. It does not matter if the user is primarily using the chair for safe in-and-out transitions without extended sitting.

The one thing most buyers miss: where the chair heats. Most heated lift chairs heat the lumbar area only. If your arthritis is in your hips, shoulders, and knees — lumbar-only heat doesn't address those areas. The Pride Radiance PLR-3955 heats shoulders, lumbar, and seat independently. That distinction is worth knowing before you choose a heated model.

Massage — Vibration vs Air Bladder

Vibration massage is available on most mid-tier models as an add-on. It creates surface-level vibration — comfortable and relaxing. Air-bladder massage (Golden's Nirvana system on the EZ Sleeper and Cloud) uses inflating and deflating air cells to create actual compression — closer to a real massage. For users with significant muscle tension, circulation concerns, or who want therapeutic massage, air-bladder is the correct choice. Vibration is a comfort feature; air massage is a therapeutic one.

What Is the Room Situation?

How much space does a lift chair need from the wall?
Wall clearance requirements vary significantly by model. Most 3-position chairs need 12"–15" from the wall. Standard infinite-position chairs need 18"–24". The Golden EZ Sleeper Slim PR-764 needs only 21.5" despite full Twilight capability. The Golden Relaxer PR-766 Large needs up to 27". Measure the space from the back of where the chair will sit to the wall before ordering — this eliminates the most common return situation we see. Also measure the doorway the chair must pass through during delivery: most chairs ship in their upright configuration at approximately 30"–36" wide.

Three Measurements Before You Order

📐 Measure Your Room Before Ordering

Wall Clearance Measure from the back of where the chair will sit to the wall. Compare this to the chair's required wall clearance in full recline. If the room is tight, consider a wall-hugger or space-saver design — the Golden EZ Sleeper Slim PR-764 needs only 21.5".
Entry Doorway Measure the narrowest doorway the chair must pass through. Most chairs are 30"–36" wide when packaged. Standard interior doorways are 32"–36". If your entry doorway is narrow, confirm with us before ordering.
Room Width Measure the total available width in the intended chair location. Bariatric models (Extra Wide Cloud PR-510) reach 45" overall width. Standard models are typically 32"–36".

Call us with these three measurements and we will confirm the chair fits before you order — not after it arrives: 866-218-0902.

The One Question Everyone Forgets — Battery Backup

If you are in Southwest Florida, this is not optional. It is a safety requirement.

When a lift chair loses power in the reclined position, the user cannot get out of it without assistance. In Southwest Florida, multi-day power outages after tropical storms and hurricanes are not hypothetical — they happen every season. A user left in a reclined lift chair during a three-day outage cannot get to the bathroom, cannot get to the kitchen, and cannot exit the chair without someone lifting them physically.

Every Golden Technologies lift chair includes battery backup as standard equipment. Every Pride VivaLift model includes lithium battery backup. Confirm battery backup before purchasing any lift chair — and confirm it will be included in your specific configuration, not as an optional add-on.

If someone tries to sell you a lift chair without battery backup in Southwest Florida, walk away. Or call us instead: 866-218-0902.

Shipping, Delivery, and What Happens After You Order

How long does it take to receive a lift chair after ordering?
Quick-ship models in stock fabrics — primarily Golden DeLuna series in faux leather — ship within 1–5 business days. Standard models in stock fabric configurations ship within 5–10 business days. Custom fabric selections and premium upgrades add 10–45 business days depending on the manufacturer and configuration. For Southwest Florida customers, we offer white-glove delivery — a technician brings the chair to your room, unpacks, powers on, demonstrates the controls, and removes all packaging. For nationwide shipping, the chair ships via freight and is delivered to the door.

White-Glove Delivery in Southwest Florida

For customers in our Southwest Florida service area — Venice, Sarasota, North Port, Port Charlotte, Fort Myers, and Naples — white-glove delivery is available. We bring the chair to the room it belongs in, set it up, power it on, demonstrate the controls, and remove all packaging. We do not leave a 200 lb box on your doorstep and expect you to figure out the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really choose the right lift chair without sitting in one?

Yes — with accurate measurements and honest answers about the condition and use case. We have sold lift chairs to customers in all 50 states who have never visited a showroom. The five questions above, answered accurately, determine the right chair in the vast majority of situations. The one exception: users with complex seating needs, atypical body proportions, or multiple competing positioning requirements. Those situations benefit from a more extended phone conversation with one of our specialists: 866-218-0902.

What if I order the wrong size?

Contact us before the chair ships — we will adjust the order. After delivery, return eligibility depends on the manufacturer and whether the chair has been used. The best protection is getting the size right before ordering. That is what the measurement guide above is for, and what our phone consultation confirms. Call us first.

Does Medicare cover lift chairs?

Medicare Part B may cover the seat lift mechanism — not the chair itself — when medically necessary for severe arthritis or a neuromuscular disease significantly limiting the ability to stand without assistance. Your physician must document this with specific language. Call us before the physician appointment: we will tell you exactly what needs to be written. Incorrect documentation is the primary reason Medicare lift chair claims are denied. 866-218-0902.

Can I use FSA or HSA funds for a lift chair?

Yes — lift chairs are eligible medical expenses for Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. We accept HSA and FSA debit cards directly. This effectively reduces the cost by your marginal tax rate — a meaningful savings on a $1,500–$3,000 purchase.

What is the difference between Golden Technologies and Pride Mobility lift chairs?

Both are excellent. Golden Technologies chairs are made in the USA with a focus on MaxiComfort positioning, Twilight Technology, and HeatWave far-infrared heat. The overstuffed Cloud back is Golden's signature comfort feature. Pride Mobility chairs are known for quiet motors, user-friendly controls, and the VivaLift lineup which adds air-bladder massage and 3-zone heat. We carry both — our specialists will tell you which fits your specific situation better rather than recommending one brand categorically.

I am purchasing this for my parent who lives out of state. How do I know what they need?

Call us and walk through the five questions in this guide for the person who will use the chair. Height, weight, condition, and room dimensions. We have done this hundreds of times with adult children purchasing for parents they cannot easily visit. With accurate answers, the right chair is determinable by phone. If you are uncertain on any measurement, we will explain how to guide your parent through taking it themselves. 866-218-0902.
