The In-Person Difference

Why You Should Not Buy a Lift Chair Without Sitting in It

A spec sheet tells you the weight capacity and fabric options. It cannot tell you whether the seat height lets your feet rest flat on the floor, or whether the recline angle is comfortable for your back. Only your body can tell you that — and only in the chair.

📐
Sizing Is Physical

Seat height, depth, and width are measured against your specific body. There is no chart that substitutes for sitting down in the chair you plan to buy.

🦴
Conditions Change the Equation

Post-hip-replacement, the safe seating angle is different. With edema, leg elevation priority changes the position type. Your fitter knows these variables — and they are in the showroom, not in a product listing.

🏠
Room Fit Needs Measuring

A lift chair in full recline extends 18–24 inches beyond its footrest. We help you measure clearance before the chair ships — not after it arrives.

💡
Features Make Sense In-Hand

The difference between a 3-position and an infinite-position chair becomes immediately obvious when you try both. Twenty minutes in the showroom saves weeks of returns and remorse.

📋
Medicare Starts Here

If you are pursuing Medicare Part B coverage, the documentation process starts with a specialist who knows exactly what your physician needs to write — before your doctor's appointment.

🔧
Service After the Sale

Every chair we sell, we service. Seven locations, in-home service calls available. Buying locally means a repair call goes to a team that knows your chair.

What Happens When You Visit

What to Expect at a Lift Chair Showroom Visit

A visit at Medical Department Store is not a sales presentation. It is a guided evaluation — a conversation with a specialist who has helped hundreds of Southwest Florida patients find the right chair.

1
Brief Intake Conversation

Your specialist asks why you are looking at a lift chair. This shapes every recommendation that follows. Be direct — the more they know, the better the match.

2
Height, Weight, and Sitting Measurements

Your specialist notes your height and asks about your weight and seated hip width. These determine which size range to start from and narrow the floor models to try first.

3
Sit in Two or Three Chairs

You sit in two or three floor models that match your size and positioning needs. Recline. Use the hand control. Tell your specialist what feels right and what doesn't.

4
Position Discussion

If you have edema, circulation concerns, back pain, or post-surgical restrictions, your specialist shows you zero gravity, Trendelenburg, or Twilight tilt — you experience whether they address your symptoms.

5
Home Placement and Room Clearance

Your specialist asks where the chair is going and helps you confirm you have the right clearance — wall-to-chair distance for recline, doorway width, and whether a wall-hugger model is appropriate.

6
Medicare, Insurance, and Payment

If Medicare coverage applies, your specialist explains exactly what your physician needs to provide — before your doctor's appointment. FSA/HSA eligibility and white-glove delivery also discussed.

  • The person who will use the chair (not just measurements)
  • A family member or caregiver if helpful
  • Your physician's name if pursuing Medicare coverage
  • Room dimensions if you have clearance concerns
  • Any discharge paperwork noting positioning restrictions
  • Your insurance card if billing assistance is needed
Walk-Ins Welcome

No appointment necessary at any of our seven Southwest Florida locations. Calling ahead (Mon–Fri 9AM–5PM, Sat 9AM–3PM) ensures a specialist is free to spend focused time with you. For complex situations — bariatric, post-surgical, Medicare coordination — calling ahead is strongly recommended.

Matching Chair to Condition

Which Lift Chair Is Right for Your Situation?

The right lift chair is not the most expensive one — it is the one that addresses your specific condition and fits your body correctly. Click any condition below to see what you need, the recommended features, and the models most commonly prescribed for that situation.

🦴 Hip or Knee Replacement Recovery
What You Need

Controlled, safe angle for sitting and standing. No bending past your surgeon's restrictions. Gradual, precise position changes. Battery backup essential.

Recommended Feature

Infinite position for precise angle control throughout recovery. Correct seat height. Battery backup standard.

Recommended Models

Pride Genesis LC-150 (3-position, entry) · Pride Tranquil 2 PLR-935 (infinite, 4 sizes — most commonly recommended post-surgery)

🦵 Edema / Lower Leg Swelling
What You Need

Feet elevated reliably above heart level — not just above seat level. Multiple times daily. Comfortable enough to hold the position long enough to matter.

Recommended Feature

True Trendelenburg (feet above heart) or zero-gravity. Infinite position required — 3-position chairs do not achieve adequate leg elevation for most edema patients.

❤️ Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
What You Need

Legs above heart for fluid management. Easy position changes without exertion. Battery backup non-negotiable for SW Florida storm outages.

Recommended Feature

True Trendelenburg. All-day comfort. Battery backup standard.

🤲 Arthritis (Hands, Back, or Hips)
What You Need

Minimal hand force to operate controls. Heat where you actually feel stiffness. Easy entry and exit. Soft but supportive cushioning.

Recommended Feature

Ergonomic rocker or toggle hand control. 3-zone heat (shoulders, lumbar, seat). Memory positions — fewer button presses per session.

Recommended Models

Pride Radiance PLR-3955 (3-zone heat) · Pride VivaLift Ultra PLR-4955 (air massage + 3-zone heat)

🔙 Chronic Back Pain / Lumbar Issues
What You Need

Zero-gravity positioning to decompress the spine. Lumbar support that fits your curve. No pressure point at the tailbone during long sessions.

Recommended Feature

MaxiComfort or Twilight zero-gravity. Power lumbar adjustment. High-density or pocketed coil seat — not foam that bottoms out.

😴 Sleeping in the Chair (GERD, Sleep Apnea, Post-Surgical)
What You Need

Lies completely flat for full-night sleep. Full-night support without pressure points. Heat and massage to make extended sleep sessions genuinely comfortable.

Recommended Feature

True lay-flat capability. Adjustable headrest. Heat and massage as standard equipment — not an upgrade.

Recommended Models

Journey Perfect Sleep Chair (the only chair we carry designed specifically for full-night sleep — heat & massage standard) · Golden Relaxer PR-766

⚖️ Bariatric (Over 300 lbs)
What You Need

Genuine capacity with genuine comfort. Wide seat that actually supports. Durable motor and frame for daily full-weight use at higher capacities.

Recommended Feature

Rated 400–600 lbs with appropriate seat width. Infinite position with true zero gravity. In-person fitting essential for bariatric patients.

Recommended Models

Golden Cloud PR-510 Extra Wide (up to 600 lbs) · Pride Tranquil 2 PLR-935 (400 lb, 4 sizes)

💪 Limited Shoulder or Arm Mobility
What You Need

Operate the chair without raising arms or gripping hard. Simple controls that work with reduced fine motor control.

Recommended Feature

Rocker or toggle hand control. Memory positions — store your preferred angles and get there with one button press.

Recommended Models

Golden Dione PR-446 (AutoDrive memory remote) · Pride Tranquil 2 PLR-935

🧍 Petite Users (Under 5'3")
What You Need

Feet reach the floor flat when seated. Seat depth not too long — not pressing behind the knees. Backrest height matches your actual back height.

Recommended Feature

Small or Petite size. Correct seat height. Compact footprint. Must be evaluated in person — petite sizing cannot be guessed from spec sheets.

🏃 Tall Users (Over 6')
What You Need

Back height that supports your full spine. Seat depth long enough for the full thigh. Footrest that actually reaches your feet in full recline.

Recommended Feature

Large or Large-Tall size. Extended footrest. Full chaise pad. Must be evaluated in person — listed dimensions don't always translate to actual fit.

Power Outage Concern (SW Florida Storms)
What You Need

Must be able to exit the chair safely during a multi-day outage. Being stranded in a reclined position without power is a genuine safety risk in SW Florida.

Recommended Feature

Battery backup as standard equipment — not an optional add-on. Confirm before purchasing any chair. Non-negotiable for SW Florida buyers.

Recommended Models

All Golden Technologies models — battery backup standard · All Pride VivaLift models — lithium battery backup standard

Your situation isn't listed? Call us at 866-218-0902 — we have helped patients with ALS, MS, Parkinson's, COPD, post-cardiac surgery, and bilateral knee replacement. If a lift chair can help, we will tell you which one and why.

Insurance & Medicare

Medicare Coverage for Lift Chairs — What to Know Before Your Doctor's Appointment

Medicare Part B may cover the seat lift mechanism when medically necessary for a qualifying condition — typically severe arthritis or a neuromuscular disease significantly limiting the ability to stand without assistance. Medicare covers the lift mechanism only, not the chair frame itself.

The documentation process requires specific language. Your physician must use terminology Medicare recognizes. In many cases, a Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN) is also required. This is where physicians who don't regularly prescribe DME commonly run into problems.

Call Before the Doctor Visit — Not After

Call any of our seven locations before your physician appointment. We will tell you exactly what your physician needs to document. A 10-minute call before the appointment prevents weeks of delays and rejected claims. 866-218-0902.

What Medicare Covers

  • Seat lift mechanism — the motorized lift component
  • One seat lift mechanism per beneficiary as medically necessary
  • Subject to Part B deductible and 20% coinsurance after approval

What Medicare Does Not Cover

  • The chair frame, upholstery, and all other components
  • Heat and massage features
  • Premium positioning features beyond the basic lift mechanism

FSA and HSA funds can typically be used for lift chairs. Many private insurance plans differ from Medicare — call us with your insurance information and we will check your benefits before you purchase.

🏛 Joint Commission Accredited — Medical Department Store meets national standards for quality, safety, and patient care in home medical equipment. We handle Medicare billing directly.

What is the best lift chair for sleeping — full-night, not just napping?

What happens to my lift chair when the power goes out during a Florida storm?

If considering a chair not listed here, confirm battery backup before purchasing — being stranded in recline during a multi-day outage is a real safety risk in Southwest Florida.

Medicare Part B may cover the seat lift mechanism when medically necessary. It does not cover the chair itself. Call us before your physician appointment — we'll tell you exactly what your doctor needs to write. 866-218-0902.

Do you deliver and set up lift chairs in Southwest Florida?

Yes — white-glove delivery across all six service areas. A technician brings the chair to your room, unpacks, powers on, demonstrates the controls, and removes all packaging. Call 866-218-0902 to schedule.

Yes — the Golden Cloud PR-510 Extra Wide (up to 600 lb) is available at our Southwest Florida locations. An in-person fitting is especially important for bariatric patients. Call 239-482-6111 (Fort Myers) or 239-529-2242 (Naples).
