Choosing the right Tegaderm product for your wound
What is 3M Tegaderm used for?
3M Tegaderm is a product line — not a single dressing — covering transparent films, foam dressings, absorbent acrylic dressings, and IV securement products. Tegaderm transparent film is most commonly used for IV site protection and superficial wound coverage. Tegaderm foam handles moderate-to-heavy wound exudate. The absorbent clear acrylic dressing is designed for longer wear on lightly draining wounds. PICC and CVC securement products are purpose-built for central line management in clinical settings.
What is the difference between Tegaderm film and Tegaderm foam?
Tegaderm transparent film is a thin, see-through semipermeable membrane with no absorption capacity — it is designed for wounds with little to no drainage, IV sites, and as a secondary cover over hydrogel. Tegaderm foam is a multi-layer absorbent dressing suited for wounds producing moderate to heavy exudate, such as pressure injuries, venous ulcers, and post-surgical wounds. If a wound is draining, Tegaderm foam is the right choice; if it is dry or nearly dry, the film or absorbent acrylic product is more appropriate.
How long can Tegaderm stay on?
Wear time varies by product. Standard Tegaderm transparent film is typically worn five to seven days. The Tegaderm absorbent clear acrylic dressing is engineered for up to 14-day wear when the wound exudate level allows. Tegaderm foam is changed based on saturation, typically every one to four days. For IV and PICC dressings, follow your facility or clinician’s protocol — usually every seven days or with each line change.
Is Tegaderm waterproof?
Yes — all Tegaderm film and foam products are waterproof and impermeable to bacteria and contaminants, making them suitable for patients who need to shower or bathe with a dressing in place. The film versions are also semipermeable to moisture vapor, allowing the wound to breathe while staying protected from external water and contamination.
Can I use Tegaderm on a PICC line or central line at home?
Yes — 3M makes PICC and CVC-specific Tegaderm products designed for sutureless securement and up to seven-day wear at central line insertion sites. These are commonly used in home infusion therapy settings. The PICC/CVC securement device stabilizes the catheter hub while the integrated dressing protects the insertion site. Home caregivers should follow the dressing change protocol provided by their infusion nurse or clinician.
