About Peristomal Skin Barrier Wipes

Skin barrier wipes deposit a thin protective film on the skin around the stoma before the adhesive barrier is applied. This film acts as an intermediary layer: when the barrier is removed, the film absorbs the mechanical peel force rather than the skin surface, significantly reducing the stripping and irritation that builds up over repeated pouch changes. The film also reduces direct skin contact with stoma output that may track under the barrier during wear. Sting-free and alcohol-free formulas (such as ConvaTec ESENTA and Hollister Adapt) are tolerated on sensitive, irritated, or already-compromised peristomal skin where alcohol-based wipes would cause burning. Important note: skin barrier wipes may reduce adhesion time when used with extended wear skin barriers — check product compatibility before use with extended wear systems. Allow the wipe to dry completely to the touch before applying the pouching system.
