3M Transpore Clear Porous Plastic Surgical Tape
3M Transpore is a transparent, perforated plastic fixation tape built for general-purpose clinical securement — dressings, IV lines, catheters, non-critical tubes, and devices. Its clear polyethylene film backing allows continuous visual monitoring of the skin and insertion site underneath without removing the tape, and its porous construction keeps the skin breathable while maintaining reliable adhesion on both dry and damp skin surfaces.
Manufactured by 3M (now Solventum) under one of the most recognized names in medical tape, Transpore is a clinical standard in hospitals, wound clinics, home care, and NICU settings where its bi-directional tear design enables fast, precise application even when wearing gloves. Available in four widths — ½”, 1”, 2”, and 3” — each on 10-yard rolls. Hypoallergenic and not made with natural rubber latex.
Key Features
- Transparent porous plastic backing: Clear film allows skin condition and insertion sites to be monitored visually without tape removal
- Bi-directional tear: Tears cleanly in both directions — lengthwise into thin strips or across the roll — without scissors and easy to handle with gloves
- Good adhesion on dry and damp skin: Acrylate adhesive maintains secure fixation even in slightly moist clinical environments
- Porous and breathable: Perforated construction allows air exchange at the skin surface, supporting skin integrity during wear
- Water-resistant: Maintains adhesion through brief moisture exposure; not fully waterproof
- Hypoallergenic: Suitable for patients with general skin sensitivity; not made with natural rubber latex
- Adheres to itself and tubing: Bonds reliably to plastic tubing surfaces in addition to skin — useful for looping and securing IV lines and catheters
- Tears into thin strips: Can be torn lengthwise into very narrow strips for precise applications including NICU and pediatric use
- Four widths: ½”, 1”, 2”, and 3” to match dressing size and clinical application

What Is This Product?
3M Transpore tape is constructed from a perforated polyethylene plastic film coated with a pressure-sensitive acrylate adhesive. The polyethylene backing is clear, allowing visual inspection of the skin, wound site, or device insertion point through the tape without disturbing the dressing or fixation. The perforations throughout the backing create porosity — air can circulate at the skin surface, reducing the risk of skin maceration from occlusion during wear.
The bi-directional tear is a defining functional feature: the perforated structure allows the tape to tear cleanly both across the roll (for length) and along the roll (into narrower strips), without scissors. This makes Transpore uniquely practical for clinicians working quickly or wearing gloves, and allows a single roll width to be customized to multiple application widths on the fly. The tape also adheres to itself and to plastic tubing surfaces, making it effective for looping techniques used to secure IV lines and catheters.
Indications / Applications
3M Transpore tape is indicated for:
- Securing lightweight wound dressings and non-adherent pads to intact periwound skin
- Anchoring bulky secondary dressings where a wide, strong fixation tape is needed
- Secondary securement of IV lines, catheters, and non-critical tubing to the skin
- Blood draw site securement following venipuncture
- Pediatric and NICU applications where the tape can be torn into precise narrow strips
- Any clinical setting where transparency for ongoing skin monitoring is a priority
- General-purpose securement across hospital, home care, long-term care, and outpatient environments
Note: Transpore is designed for intact skin. For patients with at-risk, fragile, or sensitive periwound skin, consider applying a skin barrier film (such as Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film) before taping to reduce adhesive trauma on removal. For fragile skin where barrier film is insufficient, a silicone tape is the more appropriate fixation choice.
How It Works
Transpore tape bonds through its pressure-sensitive acrylate adhesive, which activates on contact when pressed firmly against the skin or tubing surface. The adhesive maintains reliable grip on both dry and lightly damp skin — a practical advantage in clinical environments where perfectly dry skin is not always achievable. The perforated polyethylene backing distributes adhesive force evenly across the tape surface while the perforations allow air exchange at the skin interface.
The bi-directional tear is made possible by the regular perforation pattern in the plastic film, which creates structural weak points that allow clean tearing in both the transverse and longitudinal directions. The tape’s adhesion to itself allows overlapping strips to bond together, and its adhesion to plastic tubing enables reliable looping and securing of lines without separate anchoring products.
Application Instructions
- Prepare the skin: Ensure the application skin is clean and as dry as possible — for at-risk or fragile skin, apply a skin barrier film first and allow to dry before taping
- Tear to length: Pull the desired length from the roll and tear across — or tear lengthwise into a narrower strip for precision applications
- Apply and press firmly: Apply the tape over the dressing edge or tubing and press along the full length with firm pressure to activate the acrylate adhesive — do not pull or stretch the tape during application, as tension may cause blisters when the tape attempts to rebound
- For tubing securement: Loop the tape around the tubing and anchor both ends to the skin, or use a chevron/H-taping technique per your facility protocol
- Monitor the site: The transparent backing allows visual inspection of the skin or insertion site at every visit without tape removal
Important: Do not pull Transpore tape perpendicular to the skin surface during removal. For tape that has adhered strongly, use a medical-grade adhesive remover or hand sanitizer along the peel line to soften the adhesive before removing.
Dressing Change Guidance
Change frequency is determined by the underlying dressing protocol and clinical assessment — not the tape itself. Remove by peeling slowly at a low angle parallel to the skin surface, supporting the skin just ahead of the peel line. Transpore is not designed for extended wear on fragile skin — if the periwound skin shows redness, irritation, or epidermal stripping at tape margins, reassess fixation method. For patients requiring repeated tape changes on sensitive skin, transition to a lower-tack option such as paper tape or silicone tape.
Why Choose This Product
- Transparency for monitoring: The clear backing allows ongoing visual assessment of the wound, IV site, or skin without disturbing the dressing — reducing unnecessary tape removal and associated skin trauma
- Bi-directional tear for speed: Tears cleanly in both directions with gloves on — critical in busy clinical environments where scissors are not always at hand
- Versatile across applications: One product secures dressings, IV lines, catheters, and tubes — reducing the number of tape types required on a clinical unit
- Trusted 3M brand: Transpore has been a clinical standard in US healthcare settings for decades — familiar to nurses, home health aides, and procurement teams
- Economical: Four widths on 10-yard rolls, plus single-use sterile roll options, provide flexible procurement for different setting volumes
- Adheres to tubing: Direct adhesion to plastic tubing surfaces without primer or separate anchoring devices
